This was graduation day for these six local girls at Alvaton School. It was only girls on this day. Perhaps the young women and young men were kept seperate to avoid potential scandals, or as a matter of social propriety...whatever reason it is how things were done in rural Meriwether county and Alvaton in the early 20th century. The teachers seated in front are (L-R, seated) Mr. Henry Grady Gerard and Mrs. Bessie Gerard, Mr. Tom Owen (seated), Mr. Robert "Epp" McCrary(standing) and Mr. Will O'Neal (seated). the young ladies graduating are (L-R) Miss Inex Todd, Miss Bernice Ingram, Miss Pauline Heath, Miss Ludie Loftin, MissEthel Mann, and Miss Willie Heath. (Pauline and Willie were twin sisters). This old photo has been kept in my family for many years. I do not know why.

June, 1974 - it was graduation day, when Pete was officially to become Peter Hall B.A.Hons (Cantab)

Pete, Heather and I had driven up from Clacton to Cambridge the day before, in our camping clothes, with our 'posh' clothing safely stored in the back of the car. We had camped overnight at a camping site on the edge of the town and, in the morning had prepared ourselves for the great event.

Pete had had to present himself for inspection first thing - I remember that there was an insistence on BLACK socks (dark blue wouldn't do!) and - as you can see - shiny shoes!

Later Heather and I were invited to a pre-graduation party in Selwyn College with Pete's tutor and then we strolled into the town, with Pete in his gowned finery, for the graduation ceremony. This, as I recall over 30 years later, consisted in the Vice Chancellor (I think) mumbling some words in Latin over Pete's head as he stood (or did he have to kneel?) before him.

And that was that; the culmination of three years hard work. Pete was very fortunate in having accommodation within his college for the whole of his time as an undergraduate. This picture was taken during the morning of graduation day in the quadrangle of Selwyn College. The college chapel is in the background.

Immediately the ceremony was over we went back to the camp site and the next day, in our camping clothes again, we drove down to a camping site near Henley on Thames where we were to spend a week looking for suitable accommodation for Pete who was to take up a post at the Radiochemical Centre in Amersham.
