Along the trail to Hidden Lake at Logan Pass

Mountain goats are only found in North America, concentrated around the Rocky Mountains. They use the heights of their mountain homes for protection from predators. Mountain goats typically live at elevations above 10,000 feet. They migrate to lower elevations during the spring and summer, but return to their mountaintops to survive the long winter. You can count the number of rings on their horns to tell how old they are, just like a tree. In the wild, mountain goats can live up to 15 years. Long live the crazy, cool mountain goat!

Usually its the pine squirrels reprimanding my in the Rocky Mountains. In Glacier National Park the pine squirrels, although plentiful, were silent (maybe there's a healthy population of pine martens, too). The diminutive chipmunks picked up the slack. This guy ran up onto a pine bough to drive it home! So much character in a tiny body.

A mountain goat looks over the ledge at Hidden Lake in the Logan Pass area of the park. It wears a VHF radio collar (poor goat, in addition to its bad fur-hair day) and is one of several goats selected to participate in a research study to determine the movement of goats and the human-wildlife interactions within the Logan Pass area. The study is in conjunction with the Univ of Montana and is running for 3 years. All hikers are advised to stay at least 25' from the goats.
