Just before Christmas, Marna picked up a gingerbread tree kit. Admittedly, Marna is quite talented when it comes to arts and crafts. Ever since Paige however, I've always question her ability to finish a project - especially when it involved candy. As you can tell, she pulled it off with flying colors!
We spent the week prior to Christmas fending off Paige attacks on the tree as it was to be our centerpiece during our family dinner. The tree did manage to make it until after Christmas. When Paige finally got her hands on it however, she found that it wasn't to her liking, and quickly lost any interest. Now I wonder if that was because of the ginger taste, or because it was rock hard.
Catlin and I made gingerbread men and icing, and this year she wanted to make various representations of martyred Christian saints. I had to do a little research, but these were what I came up with. Recipe for gingerbreads (from Catlin) in comments here.
Gingerbread House , located at 8220 Narrows Avenue in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn,New York. Built in 1917 , it has 6 bedrooms and 3 and half bathrooms , along with a backyard a rarity in Brooklyn.

On display until New Years. The sign said that all the chefs in the hotel were involved, and that each house often required over 20 hours to create.
Everything seen (except the train and people figures) is made from edible products. (even the "trees", "snow" and "dirt")

Every year we make gingerbread men with Hallie's old/future next door neighbors. The camera was forgotten so no pictures of actual cookie making were taken :(
Waikiki's Sheraton Princess Ka'iulani Hotel Gingerbread Village
This unique and incredible gingerbread display was designed and created by Executive Chef Ralf Bauer at Waikiki's Sheraton Princess Ka'iulani Hotel.
Chef Bauer and his team put in approximately 660 working hours which includes 96 hours of set-up time to achieve this splendid work of art.
The village is made of:
100 lbs. of dark chocolate
30 lbs. of white chocolate
60 sheets of gingerbread
200 gallons of icing

There was a great selection of gingerbread houses on display at the Simcoe County Museum's Christmas Craft Show today. The public were invited to purchase tickets for a local fundraising effort and then put your ticket in the box beside your favourite entry. If your ticket is drawn you win that particular entry.
Ingredients:
Gingerbread (Prepare recipe 3 times):
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon McCormick® Ginger, Ground
2 teaspoons McCormick® Cinnamon, Ground
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon McCormick® Allspice, Ground
1/4 teaspoon McCormick® Nutmeg, Ground
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup molasses
1 egg
Royal Icing (Prepare recipe 2 times for assembling):
3 tablespoons powdered egg whites or meringue powder
1 pound confectioners' sugar, sifted (about 4 cups)
6 tablespoons water
Decorations:
Assorted candies, cereals and cookies (see Decorating Ideas below)
Additional Royal Icing (3 to 4 times recipe)
Equipment:
4 baking sheets
Hand or stand mixer
Printed pattern (see template links below)
Pattern templates cut from foam board, heavy card stock or file folders
Parchment paper
Pizza wheel
Rolling pin
Sturdy base for gingerbread house, such as large baking pan or plywood

My first stab at making a gingerbread house. To give an idea of size, the base that it is sitting on is 28" X 22".
