El Árbol del Tule (Spanish for The Tree of Tule) is a tree located in the church grounds in the town centre of Santa María del Tule in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, approximately 9 km (6 mi) east of the city of Oaxaca on the road to Mitla. It is a Montezuma cypress (Taxodium mucronatum), or ahuehuete (meaning "old man of the water" in Nahuatl). It has the stoutest tree trunk in the world. In 2001, it was placed on a UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites. In 2005, its trunk had a circumference of 42.0 m (137.8 ft), equating to a diameter of 14.05 m (46.1 ft), an increase from a measurement of 11.42 m (37.5 ft) m in 1982. However, the trunk is heavily buttressed, giving a higher diameter reading than the true cross-sectional of the trunk represents; when this is taken into account, the diameter of the 'smoothed out' trunk is 9.38 m (30.8 ft). This is slightly wider than the next most stout tree known, a giant sequoia with a 8.90 m (29.2 ft) diameter. The height is difficult to measure due to the very broad crown; the 2005 measurement, made by laser, is 35.4 m (116 ft), shorter than previous measurements of 41–43 m (135–141 ft). It is so large that it was originally thought to be multiple trees, but DNA tests have proven that it is only one tree. This does not rule out another hypothesis, which states that it comprises multiple trunks from a single individual. The age is unknown, with estimates ranging between 1,200 and 3,000 years, and even one claim of 6,000 years; the best scientific estimate based on growth rates is 1,433-1,600 years. Local Zapotec legend holds that it was planted about 1,400 years ago by Pechocha, a priest of the god that the Aztecs would call Ehecatl, the Aztec wind god,(this is in broad agreement with the scientific estimate); its location on a sacred site (later taken over by the Roman Catholic Church) would also support this.

Forest trail hike to giant old trees

Starting from the parking lot, the main hike is a 11km hike (round trip) that took 4 hours.

Smangus - God's tribe is a paradise in deep mountains in Taiwan. The indigenous people "Tayal" hold a joint operation for tourism and keep environment original, natural but comfortable without modern constructions. The biodiversity here is rich and people come here to approach several giant cypress trees (A large red cypress and some other yellow cypress).

Is it bad to have 1000's of photos from different trips that you've never even had a chance to look at?? ;)

This was one of my most memorable of the VERY "South African" experiences on my trip from last year. In photojournalistic style- I've uploaded 10 new photos.... I adore The Cape Architecture and anything thatched can win me over.... Vergelegen Winery is spectacular in all ways!... including the food and wine in the dining hall....

History from their website:

Since 1685 and to this day, the Estate has been crafted by some of the world's great explorers and visionaries, who each in their own way have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate.

I hope you like the tour... :)

Sequoia National Park

(1 in a multiple picture album)

This giant's skeleton lies in the woods among its descendants. Note the break in the trunk at the rear of the picture. The rest of the tree is longer than the part closest to you. The tree, had it fallen on a football field would have taken out both goal posts and some of the stands beyond.

These trees are hardy and have natural barriers from diseases and bugs. But . . . they have a shallow root system and so are doomed to fall when their height exceeds the roots strength to hold them up.

I truly appreciate the silence of these giants compared to the noise papers will make... Have you visited them?

238/366: The Cottonwood Trees

I just want to sit and stare up at these enormously beautiful cottonwood trees for hours. The detail, sharpness and color contrast brings my eye to a place of happiness and calm, examining each line of bark as I follow a path to the top, only to return to the beginning, over and over again. When you look up at them you see an infinity of tree with branches acting as roads which junction into different directions. As in life, we come to different junctions, different turning points – we have to choose wisely – find the branch which fits our life and our happiness and grow in that direction.. reaching for the sun and the stars.

These cottonwood trees are located in downtown Pagosa Springs Colorado. If I had to approximate, I would say they soar 80 feet into the sky which would make them hundreds of years old. These beautiful trees should forever be protected and treasured.

Giant mechanical "trees" at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

turtle bay hiking trail. oahu, hi.

Fusion Light trails by the giant tree.

I visited the UBC Botancial Garden and saw these giant trees.

They are several hundreds years of age, several tonnes of weight and several hundreds feet tall. They are living there long before the garden is built, even before the University of British Columbia, before the city of Vancouver or even before Canada is born!

They have watched people come and go.

It is an one out of millions chance we met on the day of 24 July 2010.

It also reminds me the classic story of "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein.

These are beautiful forms of life and we, humans, are nothing to compare with.

View On Black

Taken on 35mm film with a Mamiya camera on March 28, 1997.

One of Australia's largest rainforest trees may be seen in the mid north coast region of New South Wales.

The laser returned a figure of 66.1 metres. (64.4 metres on the screen, 1.7 metres added for the height above the ground at eye level). The tree was measured on the other side of the Wilson River, and the base of the tree was somewhat raised above the river bank. Though 150 metres downstream of the laser.

So the actual figure would be less than this number, by a metre or three. 63 or 64 metres tall are quotable figures for this tree.

I'm dubious of published heights of Australian trees. The scientists are too conservative. And the commercial and tourist publications exaggerate.

These figs are immense; they are giants, leviathans, colossal in the height and breadth. There's one nearly as tall, up at Sheepstation Creek in the Border Ranges.

Scientific publications say this tree may reach 30 metres. Don't you believe it!

Other tree species over 45 metres tall nearby include Brush Box, Red Carabeen, Yellow Carabeen, White Beech and Sydney Blue Gum. (Lophostemon confertus, Karrabina benthamiana, Sloanea woollsii, Gmelina leichhardtii and Eucalyptus saligna).

I think the big tree with the buttress roots is a Blue Quandong tree. It is about 200 metres along the path to the top of Mount Warning. The National Park has a parking area so you are close and it is a short walk there. Bring a tripod because it is a bit dark there and there are no level spots to put your camera.
