The race to be the highest in the canopy was won by this giant, however, all trees here rely on those around them to remain well fortified. Maybe we have something to learn from these ancient giants... collectivism is old-school, individualism is in Vogue; but who do we turn to if we need a helping hand when we're all alone up in our ivory-towers?

The trunks of a pair of giant old growth Coastal Douglas-fir trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) stand side by side dominating the landscape in Helliwell Provincial park, Hornby Island, British Columbia. They can grow up to 130 M tall and be over 1000 years old. Note the two little patches of snow on the ground.

Wouldn't it be neat if this were real, (like in Avatar) and they were all over our planet? What a tree-house this would make!!
I captured this picture in an art gallery in Healdsburg, Calif many years ago.
Winter - beautiful, stark, stoic winter - is the season of "revealment," of graphic exposure, and nowhere is the phenomena more grand than above, in the sky, in skeins of trunk and branch!

One of the largest of the Moreton Bay figs in Sydney. Likely planted in the 1840s to 1860s, this tree has grown better than many others. With massive near horizontal low branches and a full canopy 50 metres across.
This species is popular, with widespread plantings in the 19th century in Australia. In the wild, a similar old rainforest tree would be on a stem of up to 30 metres in length. Here, as the tree is out in the open, there is no stem. As there is no need for extra height to reach the sunlight.
The ability of the limbs to bear such heavy loads testifies to how well designed the low branches must be. The form of the lower part of the tree resembles muscle and power in animals. The branches in this photo resemble muscular limbs. This individual plant has remarkable strength.
Sydney occasionally has extremely high winds, and this old tree seems to have defied all of them. Despite that, the area is now fenced off, as the gardens suspect the tree might lose limbs in high winds in the future.

Impossible Project PX70 COOL and CP
Close to one year ago I began this small photo collage. I started the project in August, taking the bottom left corner of the photo and then the rest of the photo in clockwise direction. Each corner represents one of the four seasons of the same tree going in order through summer, fall, winter, and finally spring.

During the morning a thick fog fall down. This was perfect for the environment I had to photograph. So I went to the Yew forest, a virgin forest in the middle of Sicily, in the Nebrodi Park.
The forest gets its name from the large presence of yew trees present in it. In addition it's possible to admire a wide variety of trees, including a myriad of ancient trees.
The fog that wrapped the place gave a mystical atmosphere, almost ghostly to the old trees which I have photographed.
I walked through a drizzly beech forest on a certain summer day.
As the forest proceeds to the back, many of the trees are attractive
Become a mysterious primeval forest and the charm is deepened
.
The fog has been repeatedly shaded to make the forest fantastically
Wrapping, the leaves are dyed in pale green.
There is no sound stood in the Forest of silence itself
I feel the time and space to listen to the sound
To the body, and to appreciate the joy of it.
There is so much more to the trail to Goat Lake than the lake itself. I always look forward to walking through this stand of giant old growth cedar trees before making the final climb to the lake.

Expect the unexpected...
Ironically this from the first series of images I composed while on the Olympic Peninsula. So here I am, looking forward to cool damp forest shrouded in mist under wonderfully diffused light as I drove from Manitou in the wee hours of the morning to the Hoh rainforest. I made sure I stocked up on protective rain-covers for my gear just to B safe :)
So as I am turning east away from the Pacific coast, the morning's overcast was only the evening fog bank which was quickly burning off. The sky above me is getting bright, my blood boils as I'm realizing my first full day in the forest may be ruined by flat/harsh lighting.
Then, as I drive through the mighty Hemlocks and Spruce forest, this scene just appears before me :)
On my website, I've titled this one "Light Of Passage". I recently (as of 2024) decided to add it to the wall art selection that I show at various juried Fine Art Fairs throughout the year. I'm pleasantly pleased that this scene really connects with people, and they purchase quite often :)
