Wilderness Volunteer working on the Grandstaff Trail

"As an avid river enthusiast for 25 years who has traveled the world to kayak, I can attest that California has some of the best kayaking in the world. California has pristine granite scenery with untouched granite rising in domes and towers above you, to lock you into the miles of whitewater pinched between the rising walls and away from the pesky roads and towns that reduce the splendor in other locals.

One of my favorite areas in all of California is the Tuolumne River. The Tuolumne rivers flows through Hetch Hetchy in the northern reaches of Yosemite National Park, before exiting and beginning a 50+ mile path of white, flowing wonder to the valley below. Along the way, it cuts through class III to V whitewater, collecting water from Tributaries such as Cherry Creek, South Fork Tuolumne, Clavey River, and finally the North Fork of the Tuolumne just before its terminus in Don Pedro Reservoir.

The Tuolumne at Cherry Creek, and the Upper section of Cherry Creek above Cherry Lake are two of the most famous runs in the world. The Tuolumne at Cherry Creek is known as the ruler which all aspiring class V kayakers are rated against. And for me, the 3 days spent descending Upper section of Cherry Creek was the highlight of my boating career, both due to the whitewater, the effort of the 11 mile hike into the canyon, and the granite paradise that it contained."

Happiness is a day at the beach!

This lizard seemed to be missing the very end of its tail. 1 of about 10 lizards that I saw on a hot afternoon.

Our GeoDataViz team have been virtually exploring and comparing the landscapes with OS data and created a poster to showcase Great Britain's 78 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Scenic Areas (NSAs).

Take a look at the blog: www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/blog/2020/07/using-data-to-explo...

Thanks to all the students who helped clean the Cow Creek Back Country Byway for National Public Lands Day.

newly built cribbing to help protect riparian area below the trail

The Cosumnes River Preserve is home to California’s largest remaining valley oak riparian forest, and is one of the few protected wetland habitat areas in the state.

Nestled in the heart of California’s Central Valley, the Preserve is a critical stop on the Pacific Flyway for migrating and wintering waterfowl. Over 250 species of birds have been sighted on or near the Preserve, including the Swainson hawk, Canada geese, numerous ducks, and Sandhill cranes.

Day parade celebration

It was great to explore the trail all over the state of Michigan this year. We section hiked from Lowell through to Cedar Springs by our home but went as far as Petoskey for some great scenery. The most important part was sharing this in the beginning with my pregnant wife but the most recent trip have been enjoyed with our new baby in the stroller or baby carrier. Hiking is an amazing thing to share with the family, growing family.

The Iron Canyon Trail is a fun 4.5 mile trail that allows explorers a view of the Sacramento River Bend high above the canyon with very little climbing. It’s mostly single track with short sections of dirt road. This area demonstrates much of BLM's multiple use mission including, grazing, hiking, mountain biking, equestrian, fishing, birding, hunting, archaeology and more.

Our evening walks are always better with a new doll friend. I’ll be honest, we haven’t done much exploring here in Victoria because the heat has just been overwhelming. The girls were so excited that we found this pretty park last week. With all of the big trees, the walking trails are perfectly shaded so it’s actually not death level hot. (Yes I said death and yes I’m dramatic, but it’s really hot 😅)

Was working on my "bushcraftbelt" when my son came by , so did one for him too 😄
