Late last night, perhaps around 11p, a small line of severe warned cells started moving into the Whitemarsh, PA area moving WNW towards NJ. Having struck out earlier, I made my way to a small park on the water in Florence, NJ, saw some lightning, took some pictures and then started heading home.

Having to stop for gas, I stopped off outside Bristol, PA and while I was filling my tank, a huge bolt dropped out of the sky to the East. Checking radar, there was a small cell starting to take shape that had been forming around Deptford, NJ but was beginning to take off south of Medford.

I didn't want to travel too far (I still had to work today) but found a place right on the water in Bristol, PA and was able to shoot right across the river, over Burlington, directly at this cell that at this point was moving more away from me than to one side or the other, so a pretty nice line-up. This cell threw out some pretty decent bolts and I'm glad I went out.

The Sonoran Desert National Monument contains magnificent examples of untrammeled Sonoran Desert landscape. This National Monument is the most biologically diverse of the North American deserts, and the monument captures a significant portion of that diversity. The most striking aspect of the plant community within the monument is the extensive saguaro cactus forest. The monument contains three distinct mountain ranges, the Maricopa, Sand Tank and Table Top Mountains, as well as the Booth and White Hills, all separated by wide valleys. The monument also contains three Congressionally designated wilderness areas and many significant archaeological and historic sites, and remnants of several important historic trails.

Visits to the Sand Tank Mountains, located south of Interstate 8, requires a Barry M Goldwater Range permit. The permit is free, but requires the recipient to watch a 13 minute safety video. Permits are valid for one year, from July 1 through June 30 of the following year. Permits can be obtained in person at BLM's Arizona State Office and Lower Sonoran Field Office.

The 23,000-acre Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area is truly an oasis in the desert. It has four perennial waterways - the Gila and San Francisco rivers and Bonita and Eagle creeks, which are the lifeline for this remarkable place. The Gila River canyon section, known as the Gila Box, is composed of patchy mesquite woodlands, mature cottonwoods, sandy beaches, and grand buff-colored cliffs. Bonita Creek, popular for birdwatching, hiking, and picnicking, is lined with large cottonwoods, sycamores, and willows. The perennial creek and riparian vegetation make this a cool year-round desert oasis.

Cliff dwellings, historic homesteads, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and over 200 species of birds make this year-round watery desert refuge worth the short drive from Safford.
