We visited the Delaware Water Gap today, and it was a wonderful experience. This time of year is perfect for exploring the area. If you haven’t been here before, I highly recommend it. There are numerous hiking trails, camping spots, and opportunities for photography and kayaking. Plan to spend a few hours to fully enjoy everything this beautiful area has to offer.

Nature has a way of compensating us for the tough times. Those beastly hot summer days in the Mojave Desert? How about an ever-so cool winter road trip along the iconic Route 66?
What about for those short days and long nights in Alaska? You get the greatest light show not on Earth, but very visible from an assortment of BLM-managed landscapes across the Last Frontier.
The Winter/Spring issue of “My Public Lands” magazine provides articles about these adventures from each of the BLM’s State Offices.
Idaho takes you on an eagle viewing adventure near Coeur d’Alene, and visitors to Utah in winter can take part in some world-class birding opportunities. The Colorado State Office writes about its backcountry ski slopes, and the Oregon State Office tells us about the management of a recreational snow trail area that caters to a variety of winter enthusiasts.
Where can you find the only logger-head turtle nesting area managed by the BLM? That distinction belongs to Eastern States, which provides a breezy overview of its management the beach at Gulf Shores, Ala.
As you might imagine many BLM-managed areas heat up, when the rest of the country is cooling down. Such is the case with Red Rock Canyon in Nevada, the Organ Mountain-Desert Peaks in New Mexico, and a long-term camping area in Quartzsite, Ariz. Each of these provides amble opportunities for the public to get out and enjoy their public lands. As it says on the cover of the magazine – it’s your passport to America’s outdoors.

Painted Rock Petroglyph Site, approximately 90 miles southwest of Phoenix, Arizona, provides visitors the opportunity to view an ancient archaeological site containing hundreds of symbolic and artistic rock etchings, or "petroglyphs," produced centuries ago by prehistoric peoples. There are also inscriptions made by people who passed through during historic times. Many well-known events in Arizona history occurred near the Petroglyph Site, including the expedition of Juan Bautista de Anza that founded San Francisco, the Mormon Battalion and the Butterfield Overland Mail. Formerly a unit of the Arizona State Park system, jurisdiction of Painted Rock Petroglyph Site reverted to the Bureau of Land Management in 1989.

Coyote Buttes' outstanding scenery, desert wildlife, colorful history, and opportunities for primitive recreation will remain free from the influence of man and are protected in this condition for future generations. Its 112,500 acres beckon adventurers who yearn for solitude, scenic splendor, and the chance to explore one of the most beautiful geologic formations in the world.

The 80 mile Black Canyon Trail provides mountain bikers with a long range back country trail riding opportunity. This historic trail is of national significance, following a route used since the times of pre-historic Native American travelers and traders. This trail provides a challenging ride experience characterized by rough, unstable soils and rocks, with various trail grades and numerous elevation changes within a harsh desert climate. The trail meanders through the Sonoran Desert landscape, including saguaro forests and rugged canyons.

About 700 elementary and middle school students from the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District participated in Wilderness Inquiry’s third annual Canoemobile. Students paddled in 24-foot Voyageur canoes and participated in environmental education activities at Cosumnes River Preserve.
Wilderness Inquiry’s Canoemobile program engages youth across the country in hands-on, outdoor learning experiences that are focused on academics and outdoor recreation. The Canoemobile program is collaboration with federal, state and local partners.
Established in 1978, Wilderness Inquiry is a non-profit organization that connects people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to the natural world through shared outdoor experiences. Wilderness Inquiry’s programs focus on integration, education, employment, health and wellness, with inclusivity and access to the outdoors for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
The Cosumnes River Preserve, which is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, includes 46,000 acres of central valley grasslands, vernal pools, wetlands and valley oak forests.

John Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum in SW Philly has been absolutely bumpin' with all sorts of wildlife this spring.
On just about any decent weather day, you can see 6-10 Ospreys often calling and fishing together, Terns dive bombing for smaller fish, and even Bald Eagles, although they tend to stay farther away and so I haven't yet gotten a good action shot of one grabbing a fish.
There are more turtles than you can imagine, pretty large fish jumping clear out of the water, ducks, swans, geese, smaller and more colorful common song birds, and so much more.
It is such a pleasure to have this right here and so close. It's 15m from work which means if I don't want to deal with traffic just yet, I can go shoot for a little bit and by the time I leave, it's usually lightened up enough for a smooth ride home.
