Spotted geranium, Geranium maculatum (Geraniaceae) is a woodland perennial herb that is common in eastern North America. Each geranium flower exhibits protandry (literally "male first") where there is an initial male phase during which stamens shed their pollen while the stigma lobes are held tightly together and are thus unreceptive to pollen. After the flower has shed its pollen, its stigmas spread apart to receive pollen from other flowers. This is an apparent adaptation to facilitate out-crossing. This specimen, showing a male-phase flower alongside an old petal-less one displaying fully spread stigma lobes, was photographed May 3, 2007 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA.
As I pondered a better "garden home" for this geranium, I thought the blooms were welcoming a closer look. The veining is beautiful.
