I changed the color saturation of this, but I toned it DOWN, way down to look even halfway real, these flowers are truly intense!

I think it's a geranium...!

Taken in my back garden.

I photographed this one earlier this spring in the mountains of West Virginia. Another name for the flower is Cranesbill. Copyright, all rights reserved.

Geranium in the morning...

I noticed this rather bedraggled bee struggling to reach the centre of the flower. She must have had a bit of a wild night and stayed out too late. To assist her recovery I nipped inside for a jar of honey and placed a dab on the flower. The bee must have been somewhat startled at this unexpected feast and began feeding. Soon she had finished and was buzzing about happily. Who's a big soft sod then?

The Geranium

When I put her out, once, by the garbage pail,

She looked so limp and bedraggled,

So foolish and trusting, like a sick poodle,

Or a wizened aster in late September,

I brought her back in again

For a new routine--

Vitamins, water, and whatever

Sustenance seemed sensible

At the time: she'd lived

So long on gin, bobbie pins, half-smoked cigars, dead beer,

Her shriveled petals falling

On the faded carpet, the stale

Steak grease stuck to her fuzzy leaves.

(Dried-out, she creaked like a tulip.)

The things she endured!--

The dumb dames shrieking half the night

Or the two of us, alone, both seedy,

Me breathing booze at her,

She leaning out of her pot toward the window.

Near the end, she seemed almost to hear me--

And that was scary--

So when that snuffling cretin of a maid

Threw her, pot and all, into the trash-can,

I said nothing.

But I sacked the presumptuous hag the next week,

I was that lonely.

Ever think about how someone/something really impacts you? This poem matched the unexpected bloom of the pot 'thrown out' in the yard. It also resonated after reading this heart-felt excerpt of Rescue Me by Wendall Brock. Staying focused on connections - be it with people, animals or nature.

When this wildflower is blooming in the deep woods of southern Ohio it is impossible to miss. The brilliant pink petals stand out in sharp contrast to the surrounding greenery.

GERANIUM MOLLE

Geranio volgare

Geraniaceae.
