Georgetown University is a private, Jesuit university whose main campus is located in the Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Georgetown. The oldest Catholic university in the United States, Georgetown administers 180 programs in four undergraduate schools, three graduate and professional schools, and several specialized institutes. The faculty and programs in international affairs and law are especially well regarded. Georgetown's three urban campuses are laid out using quadrangles and rectangular lawns, with various facilities for research, sports, housing, and services. The main campus is known for the neo-Romanesque style Healy Hall, a designated National Historic Landmark.

"Georgetown est devenue une ville portuaire peu de temps après sa fondation en 1751. Située sur le fleuve Potomac, c'était le choix logique pour le terminus du canal. L'activité du canal a ensuite favorisé la croissance économique de Georgetown. A la fin des années 1800 c'était un port industriel très actif, avec beaucoup de cargaisons qui passaient de gros bateaux qui traversaient l'océan à des bateaux plus petits et des chariots. Sur le canal, des bateaux à charbon tirés par des mules étaient amarrés près des entrepôts pour charger/ décharger leurs cargaisons. Après un voyage d'une semaine sur les 184 miles du canal (+/-240 kms), les familles du canal avaient hâte de retrouver Georgetown"
