Back in February we went on a short trip to Penang in Malaysia to look up a friend from our school who had retired last year. On arrival we wandered around Georgetown to get our bearings

Georgetown, California

Originally constructed in 1906 to power Seattle streetcars. Powered by coal it was displaced by hydropower. It has not produced electricity since 1953. The plant is now a museum.

This village has a population 4330, is the seat of Brown County seat and the boyhood home to President Ulysses S. Grant. Rural farming community about 40 miles southeast of Cincinnati.

Taken off the rickety jetty at Chew Weld, Georgetown, Penang. This wobbly structure and the old fishing village on stilts that surrounds it, sits incongrously alongside the modern structures of downtown Penang.

Happy Window Wednesday!

Sun setting over a framers corn field. About the only bright spot as far as the weather is concerned. Been a crappy few days weather wise here in southern Ontario.

The Georgetown Steamplant was orginally constructed in 1906 to power streetcars in Seattle. As hydropower developed, the plant received less use. It last producted electricity in 1953. This scene is lit by old fashioned lightbulbs and natural light.

Constructed in 1906 by the Seattle Electric Company the steam plant was powered by coal. Within a few years, hydropower eclipsed coal powered electricity and the plant gradually fell into disuse. It was last actively used in 1953 but was fired up occasionally for testing until the early 1970's.

Seattle City Light owns the steam plant but leases it to the Steam Plant Museum. The museum opens the building for tours once a month.

Georgetown, Colorado. June 2016

I get up pretty early and it's always dark when the alarm goes off but last week, as the sun started to come up, I looked out the window and I could hardly see past the house next door--it was a genUine snowstorm and we haven't had much of it this year. I was so excited that we finally had some decent snow I was practically pacing as I waited for Norm to finish with a few things so we could go out and get some pictures.

As always, he was intrepid and when we got on the country roads he really needed to be. At one point he said, 'I hope you know how to get pictures while we're moving because I'm not taking any chances by stopping in this mess.' So I used the settings the birders on here do (hurrah for exif data) ...but instead of birds moving, it was me and I actually got some clear shots.

However, by the time we got to Georgetown the roads were much better so I was finally able to get out of the car and this house was my first stop. It's one of my favourites with that lovely veranda and it was just a bonus that the red branches of the dogwood were showing up so well against the snow.

I don't recommend taking pictures from a moving car....especially if you're the driver....but it was a rather fun and interesting challenge.
