These cliffs are famous for their amazing colours and swirling patterns.

The patterns have been created by ground water percolating through the sandstone and staining the rock. Wave action and sea spray have continued the erosion, resulting in the honeycomb patterns, potholes and notches.

"Moeraki is now most famous for its boulders; mysteriously spherical stones scattered across a beach. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high.Scientists explain the boulders as calcite concretions formed about 65 million years ago. According to Maori legend, the boulders are gourds washed ashore from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand hundreds of years ago." newzealand.com

English Description: “The black sand beach of Vestrahorn, framed by the iconic mountains, serves as a canvas for a white-clad woman. With her back to us, she points towards the sea like a nature goddess, celebrating the pure beauty of Iceland.”

Devils Postpile National Monument was once part of Yosemite National Park. The discovery of gold in 1905 near Mammoth Lakes prompted a boundary change that left the Postpile on adjacent public land.

A proposal to build a hydroelectric dam called for blasting the Postpile into the river. Influential Californians persuaded the federal government to stop the demolition and in 1911, President William Howard Taft protected the area as a National Monument.

Shari and I visited the Postpile for the first time in late October. I noticed this evening that the National Monument is closed for the season. We evidently couldn't have had better timing to get a Fall visit in.

Undara Lava Tubes were formed around 190,000 years ago when fluid basaltic lava flowed across the savannah of north Queensland. As the surface cooled and hardened, molten lava continued to move beneath it, eventually draining away and leaving long, hollow tunnels behind.

The Gunung Kawi complex is believed to have been built in honour of King Anak Wungsu and his family, who ruled Bali from the 11th to the 13th century. The shrines are each 7 meters high and feature intricate carvings of Hindu deities and mythological figures. Visitors must descend 300 steep stone steps to reach the shrines.

I have some pictures with the colored lights they turn on for the tour, but you're better off not seeing them. Only in the Midwest. Oy

On our first trip to Oregon, I had the Fort Rock in North Lake County as a possible spot to visit in my list. But unfortunately, we couldn’t find a time slot to fit in a sunset shoot at the rock. So, when we planned a second trip to Oregon, we made the Fort Rock location a must visit spot. On the first day as we reached Bend after checking in to the hotel, we drove straight to North County and to Fort Rock.

From the little information I read at the park this whole area was an ancient lake bed and fort rock formation happened when a lava bubble formed and burst under water. When standing in a sage bush sea it's almost unbelievable to think that this used to be a lake bed 100,000 years ago.

As for this shot, I wanted to make an image to emphasize fore on the sheer size of the rock cliffs. This is the spot from where which Fort Rock appears the narrowest and after a fair bit of walking around the bushes and encountering three coyote puppies, I managed to take this shot.

These rock features eroded into the sheer sandstone wall are to be found on the right hand side of the Kuniya Walk as you approach the Mutitjulu Waterhole. In my Mutitjulu Cave image (Uluru-Kata Tjuta_img 0072) they can just be seen on the extreme right of the photograph.

Every mark is a message from long ago.

Another stop was a dry landing at Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island. In the Galápagos, most landings are done by dinghy. There are two types: wet landings, where you step into shallow water and wade to shore, and dry landings, where the dinghy pulls up next to rocks or a small dock so you can step out without getting wet.

Sullivan Bay is one of those dry landings, and the landscape here is unlike anything else. The entire area is a hardened lava field from a volcanic eruption in the late 1800s. The dark, twisted rock formations still show where the lava once flowed, with patterns that look like waves or ropes. It’s dry, silent, and almost moon-like—a genuinely otherworldly place.

Pretty Plantation Point. One of my local stomping grounds. This part of the point changes noticeably a few times a year. Sometimes these rocks are covered completely with the pure white sand and then the tides change and the sand is stripped away exposing the rocks and electric green moss. It really is quite awesome and quite stunning on a day like today with the blue sky and crystal clear aqua ocean.. Yep the fire is still burning you can just see it on the horizon...the park should be open again on Friday although there isn't much left of it and no one knows yet the fate of a rare and endangered Bandicoot that was only reintroduced into the park last year...
