Lake Powell is an artificial reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona, United States. It is the second largest artificial reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre-feet (3.0001×1010 m3) of water when full. However, due to high water withdrawals for human and agricultural consumption, and because of subsequent droughts in the area, Lake Mead has fallen below Lake Powell in size several times during the 21st century in terms of volume of water, depth and surface area.
Lake Powell is named for Civil War veteran Major John Wesley Powell, who explored the Green and Colorado rivers in 1869 down through Grand Canyon. In August, 1869, Powell and his eight companions passed through the site of present day Glen Canyon Dam. Extending nearly one-third of a mile across from canyon rim to rim, the dam created the reservoir known as Lake Powell.
On the right hand side above the horizon is probably Tower Butte, which is a 5,287-foot (1,611 meter) elevation sandstone summit located south of Lake Powell, in northern Arizona. It is situated 9 miles (14 km) northeast of the town of Page.

According to the tour guide: these stalactites resemble over-hanging breasts. I like the fact that this small part of the cave was illuminated with soft, uncoloured lighting.
Yinzi is a famous cave in Yangshou, Guangxi, China. Covering an area of 1,000,050 square meters, the Silver Cave Scenic Area in Lipu County is 85 km away from the downtown Guilin and 3 km away from Yangshuo County.
According to the Yinzi Cave Travel Guide : "The Silver Cave (Yinzi Cave) is praised as "the World Limestone Cave Miracle" by the experts on Karsts geology from France. It is one of the most impressive caves with amazing crystal cave deposits in Guilin. The deposits are prevented from oxidation very well, so the Silver Cave is as beautiful as its name. "

The 3 photos I'm posting today were actually taken by a friend but post-processed / edited by me before posting them here. It was a large area to be covered on foot in a limited time, so the subjects and points of view interestingly differ from person to person.

This sharp, wedge-like 230 foot tall headland separates Gog and Magog to the left and the 5 and a half Apostles to the right that are still standing. Over millions of years, nature sculptured the tip of the limestone into a shape resembling the turret of a medieval castle.
On an overcast, misty, spring dawn, the light was soft, and the subtle colours and the beautiful texture of the rock face could easily be appreciated. The clouds looked angry, the sea was rough, with varying shades of blue and green and on-rushing foamy waves. For a brief moment the sun broke through thick clouds, the colour changes were dramatic and the scene was surreal and sublime. Beyond the horizon is Bass Strait, which is part of the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park.

Talampaya National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Talampaya) is a national park located in the east/centre of La Rioja Province, Argentina. It was designated a provincial reserve in 1975, a national park in 1997, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
Here are the sediments of the Triassic Period, accumulated over millions of years in the depths of the planet, exposed during the process of formation of the Andes Mountains. The force of nature prevails in the reddish walls sculpted by water and wind, in the flight of condors embracing the Canyon, in the sky and the pure air of this semi-desert.
Among its most famous geological features is the Talampaya Canyon, a breathtaking gorge that rises up to 150 meters high. The canyon and surrounding areas showcase natural sculptures and formations, including the Monk (at the right of my picture), the Tower, and the Cathedral, silent testaments of the erosive power of water and wind over the ages...

While most people associate the Catalan language with Barcelona and the region around it, it is not an official language of Spanish, which makes Andorra the only country in the world to speak the regional language officially. Spanish and to a lesser extent, French and Portuguese are widely spoken inside the Principality as well.
The Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga, South Africa, extends for 50kms (31.07 miles) along the lip of the great African escarpment. From the canyon rim guests can look eastwards over the layered rocks of the canyon walls and the Three Rondavels to the Lowveld plain, 1 600 metres below.
It was at this point that the ancient super continent, Gondwanaland, broke apart and Madagascar and Antarctica tore free from Africa some 200 million years ago. The broken edge of the continent was gradually tilted upwards by the weight of a vast shallow sea stretching west to beyond Pretoria.
This sea, already ancient when Gondwanaland was split by these earth-shaping forces, left behind layer upon layer of dolomite and sandstone laid down as sediments over millions of years.

"Bryce Canyon Series #22 - Sunset Point" by Patti Deters.
Dramatic hoodoos create an intricate landscape of spires and pinnacles against the backdrop of a steep canyon wall that is dotted with pine trees. Sunlight highlights the warm tones of the sandstone rock formations. The natural erosion patterns carve unique shapes from the canyon walls, adding depth and character to the scene. Photographed at Bryce Canyon, Sunset Point is found at GPS: 37°37'23.0052N 112°9'57.7404W. The pink and white limestone geological buttes and hoodoos of this Utah, USA National Park absolutely glow in the late afternoon light. Thank you for viewing this picture. Capturing this panoramic view of the Aragonese Pyrenees with the magnificent Peña Montañesa dominating the right side of the frame, I was struck by the incredible geological drama of this limestone landscape. This iconic peak, with its distinctive layered cliffs and fortress-like silhouette, stands as one of the most recognizable mountains in the Spanish Pyrenees.
I wanted to showcase not just Peña Montañesa but the entire limestone chain that characterizes this region near Ordesa. The way these sedimentary formations catch and reflect the light tells the story of ancient seas and millions of years of geological processes. Each layer visible in these cliffs represents a chapter in Earth's history.
The contrast between the deep green valleys dotted with traditional villages and these towering limestone walls creates a landscape that feels both intimate and monumental. Under this perfect blue sky scattered with white clouds, the golden light on the rock faces reveals every detail of the stratified geology that makes this UNESCO-protected region so scientifically and aesthetically remarkable.

I wanted to capture the magical moment when the golden sunset light illuminates the cliffs of Page. By choosing a panoramic format, my intention was to reveal the grandeur of this desert landscape, from the sagebrush to the towering sandstone cliffs. I waited for the golden hour to seize this moment when the warm sunlight contrasts with the dramatic cloudy sky, creating this unique atmosphere that characterizes the Colorado Plateau landscapes. This photo celebrates the raw beauty of Arizona, where millennial geology reveals itself in the evening light.
No Kangaroo Island holiday would be complete without a trek to one of the island's signature landmarks, Remarkable Rocks. It took 500 million years for rain, wind, and pounding waves to create these aptly named granite boulders which are now part of the Flinders Chase National Park.
