One of my favourite climbing roses to photograph - the scented blooms have a delicate beauty

My lovely, generous husband bought me a new pair of running shoes. I think he's trying to tell me something. He also kindly took me for a run tonight. It's been years since I went for a run but I managed a comfortable 22 minutes. Something tells me I'll struggle to get out of bed tomorrow morning.

Feeling incredibly grateful for a casual hike I got to take today with family. It's the last "real" hike I'll probably get in before knee surgery in less than a week, which will immobilize me for a while. First time I got out to Buddy's Grave this season and the wildflowers up there are amazing. Oh, and the mountain views, of course.

Thank you to all participants of and generous donors at the ESCP Europe Bicentenary Fundraising Gala. A fabulous €200,000 was raised in the 200th year of ESCP Europe, contributing to the School's Scholarship Programme.

100 guests gathered this year at the Four Seasons Park Lane for a wonderful evening sponsored by 17Capital and Accuracy. A cocktail reception with champagne premier cru Frerejean Freres was followed by an absolutely delicious dinner.

Adrian Biddell hosted the live auction of impressive lots, kindly donated by Pierre Guénant (Class of 72), Erwan Faiveley (Class of 03), Cartier, Claudie Haignere and W. Salamoon & Sons.

After an address by Christian Mouillon, President of the ESCP Europe Foundation, and testimonials from two Bachelor in Management (BSc) scholarship students, Julia Fladrich and Maya Caroti, around 20 alumni pledged their support to the ESCP Europe Scholarship Programme for close to €100k.

On behalf of the scholarship students and all the ESCP Europe community, THANK YOU!

UN Women, through generous support from the Government of Japan through the Japan Supplementary Budget, is currently implementing the multi-country project “Women’s Leadership, Empowerment, Access & Protection in Crisis Response (LEAP) -South Sudan Displacement and Refugee Crisis”.

The one-year project is part of a regional response that is being implemented by UN Women offices in Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan, which are currently hosting refugees estimated at 537,504 (Ethiopia: 422,240, Kenya: 115,264) and internally displaced persons (IDPs). According to the South Sudan 2018 Humanitarian Needs Overview, there are around 1.9 million IDPs in the country, 210,000 persons in protection of civilian sites (PoC) and an estimated 2.1 refugees in neighboring countries.

The overall goal of this project is to ensure that women and girls affected by the South Sudan displacement and refugee crisis lead, participate in, are empowered by and benefit from response and recovery efforts.

UN Women Kenya, through the Government of Japan, is responding to the needs of women and girls in humanitarian crisis by contextualizing the UN Women global LEAP flagship programme to promote resilience, restore dignity and provide durable solutions to women and girls within the humanitarian- development nexus in Kenya.

The next morning, Carol generously offered to make us all breakfast burritos. How those eggs survived the pounding of the washboard portion of the trail is beyond me. The burritos were really good - thanks Carol! Then we started driving down the Bradshaw Trail only to miss an important turn. We went about 4 miles before we figured out that we were going the wrong way. We turned around and went back and found the correct turn. We drove approximately 15 miles to our first hike trailhead. We planned on hiking to a benchmark - Bau BM. This hike was about 6 miles with about 1300 feet elevation gain. John pointed out in the distance and said, "That pointy peak is our destination". So off we went. Only as we got closer to the pointy one, John was angling away toward a flat-topped peak. When asked where he was going, he said "Not the pointy one, the flat-topped one". But by that time we had separated onto two groups and one of the groups didn't get the word in time. They ultimately went to the pointy one and we went to the flat-topped one. It turned out that Bau BM was on top of the flat-topped one. Ted was in the group that went to the pointy one. Climbing that one was not enough for Ted. He then climbed down to a saddle between the two peaks and joined us on the flat-topped one. This hike was unusual for us in that the hike in the desert had a lot of traction, which makes walking nice and easy. Usually we are walking in sand or loose gravel or some combination of both. Today we walked on something that hiking guru Jerry Schad called "desert pavement". Even the climb up the very steep portion of the flat-topped one was easier due to the good traction. On the hike up to the peak, the wind was in full force. Several people threatened to turn around and go back because the wind was so strong. Ultimately, everybody in our group made it to the top. And the view from the top was magnificent. We truly felt like we were on top of the world. We then drove on to find a campsite near the start of our third day hike. After looking it over, we decided that the planned hike was potentially too difficult. We camped there for the night and decided to go to Plan B for the third day's hike. Around the campfire it was much quieter due to the fact that all the margaritas had been drunk the previous night. The wind calmed down considerably overnight, but we could not see the stars due to the cloud cover. After most of us had gone to bed for the night, a series of large booms/explosions could be heard in the not too far distance. We were camped near the border of a very active military bombing range and they decided that that night they needed to do some nighttime practice. We heard maybe a couple of dozen bombs go off along with what sounded like the gatling-gun type cannons mounted on some of the military's helicopters. I was glad when it ended because there was no way we could sleep during all that noise - except for John who claimed that he didn't hear a thing.

One morning when I was out for a walk, I saw that some maintenence workers were getting set up to trim the hedges. I asked one of them if he could give me some cuttings of bougainvillea, and he happily did!

It reminded me of another generous gardener!

To Support Displaced Youth from Fallujah

Inauguration of Temporary Premises of Fallujah University (Dorms and Classrooms)

in Abu Ghraib, Baghdad

On 23 June 2016, the temporary premises of Fallujah University, located inside the Veterinary College, Baghdad University in Abu Ghraib, were inaugurated. With the generous contribution from the Government of Japan, the temporary premises of Fallujah University were established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) providing 25 classrooms and 128 residential units that can accommodate 512 students, in addition to basic site infrastructure and an administration building. The project aimed at supporting displaced youth who bear enormous and long-lasting human, social and economic costs.

His Excellency Mr. Sohaib Al-Rawi, Governor of Anbar, who attended the event, commented that while the Anbar Governorate has been supporting institutions displaced by violence outside and within Anbar, including Fallujah University, the ongoing financial crisis has affected all aspects of people’s lives and limited the government’s capacity to support. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of UN agencies and the ongoing support of UN-Habitat on housing self-repair and shelter projects within Ramadi. He expressed his gratitude to all those who stand with people of Iraq, and specifically of Fallujah, in the midst of the hardship they face.

On UN-Habitat’s side, Dr. Erfan Ali, Head of Iraq Programme, pointed out that lack of access to education among youth is one of the key factors that fuel a cycle of poverty, hopelessness and frustration. He expressed his hope that these new premises of Fallujah University will enable young women and men from Fallujah to continue their education and play an active role as agents of positive and constructive change.

Mr. Hirofumi Miyake, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Iraq, stated that Japan also has its own internally displaced persons, resulting from disasters of tsunamis, earthquakes, debris, and the latest nuclear accident, and therefore the people of Japan understand very well the importance of support to displaced persons in Iraq. He further emphasized that Japan will continue to sustain the efforts of UN-Habitat to improve the living conditions of the displaced persons in Iraq.

Dr. Ibraheem Abdulkareem, Deputy President of Fallujah University, stated that the completion of the new premises of Fallujah University has provided a glimpse of hope in the heart of displaced students, and he recognized that the inauguration is concomitant to the liberation of Fallujah.

On his part, Mr. Sattar Nawroz Khan, General Director of Migration at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, praised the joint cooperation and partnership between multiple actors, including the Governments of Iraq and Japan, Anbar Governorate, Fallujah University, and UN-Habitat, that enabled the positive results of the overall project.

This project was implemented within the framework of larger programme titled “Humanitarian Support to Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq through Provision of Durable Shelter,” funded by the Government of Japan, aiming to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons in Iraq through the provision of prefabricated durable shelters, and thereby to support and strengthen their self reliance.

A generous supporter invited the Iowa crew and guests to catered dinner at his private classic car museum. He asked that we don't reveal the location, and I'll only say this is in southern California.

It was amazing to see so many rare, beautiful cars. Everything works! As much as I enjoy them I'm no good at identifying most of them. Those I do know are shown in the tags. I'll be updating if/when I get solid info.

So hard to be kind and generous, enough is never enough...

I have been very fortunate in holidaying in a gorgeous chocolate box thatched cottage in deepest Suffolk for the last week.

Three friends and i have been allowed to stay in the second home of a most generous couple and as a gift I was asked to make a thank you card for our hosts.

I made four!

I also created a stitched paper pod for holding lavender which now adorns the massive chimney breast.

I do hope our hosts like these gifts which use flowers from their amazing garden.

This blanket is a generous size at 31inx35in. It is made from an acrylic yarn that is very soft and warm and also easy to wash. The color is what really makes this blanket fun. The pink is bright and cheerful and makes you happier just looking at it. The colors represented in the picture are close to the natural color.

This is a fun shell design with a beautiful large shell border. This would be beautiful for a little girl. This was such fun to crochet because the color is so bright and the yarn is so soft.

Machine wash cold, preferably in a zippered bag or pillowcase. This prevents pulls in the yarn. Machine dry low or air. Also can be hand washed and lay flat to dry.

took another series of photos with keeping the subject in place but changing my perspective...this one close up...

Hot fuschia pink, rich golds and a hint of purple when combined created a dreamy ambience that looked as though it was plucked right out from a fairy tale book !

Generous heaps of blooms were used to create a beauteous touch !

The crystal danglers against the stunning lights were absolute adorbs !

The decor was filled to the brim with hanging strings of flowers, making the guests go head over heels in love with the entire set up :)
