Robert Kaufman generously donated a charm pack for each member of participating chapters in the Modern Quilt Guild to use for a challenge project of our choosing.
The NOVA Modern Quilt Guild selected the Bright palate (http://www.robertkaufman.com/pre-cut/konareg_cotton_solids_bright_palette1/) to work with and each of us made one or more mini quilts (29"x29" to 45"x45"). The members were allowed to add fabric from their stash as long as the charms remained the stars of the show. The quilts will be donated to the INOVA Fairfax Children's Hospital NICU.

A big thank you to the participants and generous donors of the first ESCP Europe Fundraising Gala in London last week. An impressive £220,000 was raised which will contribute greatly to the ESCP Europe Scholarship Programme.
Over 100 guests gathered at the Four Seasons Park Lane for a wonderful evening sponsored by Ondra Partners and New End Associates. A cocktail reception was offered, serving champagne premier cru Frerejean Freres, and was followed by a gourmet autumn dinner.
The auction, led by Adrian Biddell, spurred great interest for the wonderful lots donated by Pierre Guénant (72), Olivia de Posson (06), Jean-Pierre Raffarin (72), Christian Marti (93), and W. Salamoon & Sons.
Around 15 alumni pledged their support to the ESCP Europe Scholarship Programme for the equivalent of eight years of study or a total amount of £120,000.
This unprecedented mobilisation demonstrates the unity and dynamism of the ESCP Europe alumni network. It also shows its commitment to support the School's growing momentum, forging a path to become the number one business school in Europe with a truly global reach.
On behalf of the scholarship students and all the ESCP Europe community, thank you!

Wacom has been pretty generous with the tips that come with the Intuos 4 - the new surface is a lot rougher, meaning the tips will wear down pretty quickly, but the upside is a more paper-like feeling, which I love. The pen is a lot cooler than the Bamboo one, too - thicker and has a nice grippy rubber surface.
(I case you can´t tell, the tips are inside the pen holder that twists off, and it also has a tweezer ring - no more biting the worn down tips out of the pen anymore.)
Generously enough we were also invited to a cocktail dinner later on after the inauguration at Hotel Sarakawa.
What to expect?

On Saturday, 3 February 2018 Veronica-Clibborn Dyer generously invited RAS members to visit her beautiful garden and adjacent buildings with Kwun Yam and Shing Wong Temples and a small museum of local field and lifestyle artifacts including deity ceramics.
In 1996, Veronica Clibborn-Dyer and her late husband Ron, formerly a HK policeman, discovered a run-down property in the hills above Nam Chung in HK’s far north-east, overlooking Starling Inlet. Some good detective work and the lucky find of a scrap of paper with a UK phone number on it enabled them to finally identify the owner and background of the building and eventually an arrangement was established whereby they became live-in caretakers of the property. This involved years of hard labour by Ron and Veronica, clearing out a lot of old rubbish, since the place had been a refuge for women, mostly retired amahs who had nowhere else to go once their working lives were over. As well as cleaning up the property to make a home and conserve the place, Veronica and Ron created the most wonderful garden in the terraced grounds. With its beauty and charm, plus its position amid some of HK’s most stunning scenery, their Temple of Peace and Tranquility is truly a special and unique place.
At the top of the nearby hill is a pavillion dedicated to the memory of Sir Edward Youde, Governor of Hong Kong from 198 to 1986. From this viewing point there are views of Sha Tau Kok, Starling Inlet and the Yantian district of Shenzhen in mainland China.
Generosity seems to float around David. As hospitality has been such a huge part of his life for so many years; it seems the act of giving is as natural to him as breathing or walking. This is indicative not only in magnanimous way he refused our money for food
and drink during the time we spend with him at his restaurant, but also in the charitable way he revealed his story to us with such a humbling honesty.
He spoke at length of the highs and lows of running a restaurant and it was hugely inspiring to see the passion and ingenuity for food was still burning brightly within him after almost forty years in the business.
His motivation for success doesn’t lie amongst the materialistic ideologies of fast cars and expensive living; these trinkets of the rich are casually dismissed by David during our interview. Although it is clear that he owes much to the rich in terms of custom, the location of his restaurant alone with its affluent Georgian surroundings pays tribute to that, but it’s also obvious that materialism is not what drives him. A far nobler cause is what keeps David bubbling with ambition-to give his family a present and a future as well as a past to look back on.
After the photo shoot, back at his restaurant where we have coffee and food lavished upon us, David tells us of his early struggles in the business and the effort he had to put into the restaurant; this concept of laborious toil seems to contrast with the slick performance of the
staff and the general jangle of a well run eatery. They say that people in the hospitality industry are cut from a certain cloth; that it helps to have a certain eccentric energy to deal with the high pressure job. David is no different in this respect and as the relaxing flavour of the coffee sets in he tells us tale after tale of the unique way he has dealt with obstacles in his career.
I remember once, am I going back a long long way now. This guy was eating in the restaurant with his wife; they’d had two meals, a bottle of wine and some coffees. He comes up to me and says ‘you’ve over charged me’ in the most aggressive manner. So I tot up the bill and I notice we hadn’t actually charged him for the coffees. So I say ‘actually sir, we’ve undercharged you’ so this goes back and forth for a while till I tell him to forget about it, I don’t need his money and I certainly don’t need his attitude. So he storms off up to the bar. He snaps at our girl ‘Get my coat’ no please, nothing. So I shoot up behind the bar. ‘Get your own coat’ I
say to him, ‘there is no more service for you’. Then he bypasses me again, trying to get at the girl. So I drop down to my hands and knees and start barking at him. That got his attention definitely and before he had a chance to say anything I say ‘do you know what a dog does next? Raises his leg and if I raise my leg I’ll piss on you. Now get out of my restaurant!’ needless to say, he got his own coat and left immediately.
