Screw Generators or Archimedean screws typically rotate at around 26 rpm, so the top of the screw connects to a gearbox to increase the rotational speed to between 750 and 1500 rpm to make it compatible with standard Screw generators.

One interesting thing about electricity is that they can only make enough of it to fill the demand at any one time on the customer grid. They can't store it after its generated. In fact if they generate more than is being used the voltage goes up and it messes up a lot of equipment, including all your appliances. But the energy grid is constantly changing, how do they keep the voltage steady? A lot of things do this of course, but the main thing is they literally control the flow of water coming into the turbines based on how much electricity is needed. So if you turn on your toaster oven, and you are connected to this hydro plant, then the system knows to let just a little more water through to make up for the extra load on the generator. Of course when you turn on your toaster oven, some one else has just turned off their washer dryer, so it evens out in all sorts of ways. But when it aggregates back to the power station as need for power or need for less power, then they just change the flow of water.
