Let's say you work in product marketing for a company called Cummins. Huh huh. Let's say you're out drinking with some co-workers, one of whom dares you to call a product line "Onan". Huh huh. Huh huh.

For silent type, the noise level can be 70db(A)@7M; with silent canopy, the genset can be soundproof, rainproof, rustproof, dustproof and more safe.
When the Cold War bunker was on the electricity grid, this generator would have kicked in automatically if the grid supply failed. There was a backup generator that could have been started manually.
Now it will cost £60,000 to have the tunnels reconnected to the grid. Though with the cost of diesel these days, sooner rather than later would be better.
As you might guess, it was very noisy here. My torch is lighting up the centre of the nearest generator. Like much of the tunnels, this was in total darkness.

This is what I can remember the guide telling us:
Drakelow Tunnels cover about 285,000 square feet (26,500 square meters)
Built in 1939 for LandRover workers to make engine parts for Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes.
Later it became a Cold War regional defense bunker, hence the three blast doors we had to pass through to gain entry to the site.
The site is massive, the tunnels stretch for three and a half miles (five and a half kilometers) -- on entry, our guide told us not to wander off or we would become lost, and I can well believe it.
All sorts can be seen down there, including dormitories, canteens, and even an operating theater from the Cold War era. This had been found with all the equipment (such as an X-ray machine) unopened.
Eight Units.
The first four units were 100MW coal fired generators, they were installed in the original station. The remaining four units were installed in the sixties and put out 200MW. In 1971 all the generators were converted to burn natural gas, with the first four units retaining their ability to burn coal.
These have since been removed completely and the bay is empty. At least the workers got a kick out of our 'guest book' on Unit 8. O RLY?
I got myself a small generator - 3.5 KW - enough to run the TV and refrigerator - I need to get it out of the box, add the wheel and start it up - maybe this weekend.

Diesel Generator is a very small MOC, and it was a huge challenge for me, because of the several details and techniques used.
I think I managed to get a very satisfactory result.
