In 1928, the Century Club acquired architect George D. Mason to design a theater addition to the Century Club building. Known as the Little Theatre, the building showed foreign films and was leased to the Little Theatre chain. Due to the Depression, the Twentieth Century Club disbanded in 1933. The Little Theatre continued with several name changes, becoming The Rivoli in 1932, later Drury Lane, and Europa in 1935, and the Cinema from 1936 to 1960 until the theatre was named the Vanguard Playhouse.
In 1967, the Vanguard Playhouse was renamed the Gem and used as an adult movie house until it closed in 1978. In the early 1980s, Charles Forbes purchased the Gem and Century Building; Forbes also owned the Fox and the State Theaters. In 1990, Forbes began the restoration of the Gem including its carpet, which was redesigned from a small section of the original carpeting found in the basement of the theater. On New Year’s Eve in 1991, the Gem reopened.
In 1997, the Gem/Century Building made history once again as the theater was lifted from its former foundation and moved five blocks to its new home at Madison and Brush. With plans for a new baseball stadium for the Detroit Tigers, the Gem and Century buildings would have either been destroyed or would have to move. Forbes decided to move his buildings, which weighing at more than five million pounds, found its place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the heaviest building ever relocated on tires. On September 9, 1998, the Gem Theatre reopened after eighteen-months of restoration.
Known as 'the Queen of the Murray', the paddle steamer Gem was part of an era when paddle steamers roamed the giant Murray River, delivering goods to small outposts that were littered along its banks, and on the return trip, picking up bales of wool for export to overseas markets. Built in 1876 as a wooden planked barge at Moama, New South Wales it was in launched 1876, and started out its long life being towed by other steamers, to then being modified by cutting it in half, building three floors to cater for passengers as well, and then put into service along the Murray. Its first trip was to Hay towed by P.S. Pearl with 203tonnes of cargo. Return trip with 1,038 bales of wool. January 1877, the Gem became a Paddle Steamer engine, fitted by Davey Brothers of Ballarat then paddle wheels and passenger facilities added to make it into a general cargo and passenger boat. In August 1877 it began its Maiden voyage from Echuca to Goolwa, a grand total of 1,710 kilometres. It was sunk twice and ended its paddling life at Pioneer Settlement City at Swan Hill in Victoria where she still lies.
On the sixth of November 1948 the P.S. Gem sprung a leak in the lower deck. The fireman alerted the crew that they were taking on water at an alarming rate. The captain, G. Makin at the wheel turned towards the shore hoping to run up onto sand so they could assess the situation. About thirty metres from shore with water pouring into the hull, the P.S. Gem sank in four feet of water and lisped to one side. They tied a cable to a tree to hold the paddle steamer from moving back into deeper water. One of the crew ran for help at the nearby Kulcurna station and managed to obtain a small boat. They took all the passengers ashore gave them refreshments then took them all back to town by a small bus. There were no causalities, however one of the passengers from Queensland who was under a doctor for a heart condition, died while transferring from the steamer.
The P.S. Rothbury and the barge Cowirra dragged the Gem into shallow water. There they fixed the leak with cement, pumped out the hull and towed back to Mildura. Ten months past while the Gem was repaired and refitted going back into service in 1949.
This was not the only time that the paddle steamer Gem sank.
In 1910 with Captain J. Nutchey at the wheel the Gem was snagged at Snaggy Point and after getting all his crew and passengers off the vessel, he remained on board until the salvage started.
In 1878, the engineer aboard the P.S.Gem, Mr.Mcfarlane, died when a burst of steam burst out from the boiler scalding Mr. Mcfarlane giving him massive burns to his body. He was rushed to Wentworth Hospital in a critical condition but after two days of agony he died.

I bought the action a few years ago cheaply as it was siezed solid and really rusty! It came without a stock so I was going to make one but I found this stock at the Melbourne Vintage airgun fayre today for £5
It may be the 'gee up' that I needed to carry on and get the old girl up and shooting once more!!

my first PC (my dads) came with Gem/3 - The gorgeous Graphical Environment Manager for 8088 processor, created by one of the original GUI designers at Xerox PARC. The most wonderful environment to work in, only problem was... No software - first word plus, timeworks dtp, a couple of games and gem/paint was about it. If only they'd included a little compiler rather than charging developers for their dev environment
