Well, a gem that is literally hidden by scaffolding!

The Ayr Station Hotel was designed Scottish engineer Andrew Galloway in French Renaissance château-style. He was also the chief engineer of the Glasgow and South Western Railway.

The hotel opened in 1885 and has been laying dormant for years. It was classed as in dangerous condition in 2018 and the council erected scaffolding and sheeting to prevent further deterioration - at a cost of 60k a month the the taxpayer.

It's fair to say the the absent owner, a Malaysian businessman, isn't be the most popular person in the town - if anyone could find him.

A display of wholesale faceted gems, this box at a dealer in the Riverpark venue of the Tucson Rock and Gem Show. I was surprised to see some of these specimens in faceted form. The bright blue "hauyne" gems are particularly striking. Ooooh, I'd like to get a lot of these and have them made to jewelry. This one is very interesting to see in the largest size, for the ID and detail shows decently, despite each sparkly gem being safely inside the little cases.

After much draw filing..

Another from Saturday of Little Gem - I just wish the light for shooting was that gorgeous all of the time.

Started as a commercial princess square, 2.2ct, 7mm. I was asked to recut it into a custom shape. This stone has an extremely low crown, perhaps used to minimize the inherent color & strong double refraction of moissanite.

Grevillea, commonly known as spider flower, is a genus of about 360 species of evergreen flowering plants in the family Proteaceae.

The genus Grevillea was first formally described in 1809 by Joseph Knight from an unpublished manuscript by Robert Brown. Knight gave the spelling Grevillia, corrected by Brown in 1810 to Grevillea in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London. The genus was named in honour of Charles Francis Greville, an 18th-century patron of botany and co-founder of the Royal Horticultural Society.

There are over 380 species which are endemic to Australia. 15 other species are endemic to areas outside Australia.

Many grevilleas have a propensity to interbreed freely, and extensive hybridisation and selection of horticulturally desirable attributes has led to the commercial release of many named cultivars. The cultivar 'Canberra Gem' has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Rising some 5,906 feet (1,800 m) above sea level, Squaw Butte, named by Native Americans who used this area as their winter resort, stands at the north end of the valley. The Payette River was named after Francois Payette, a fur trader from Quebec who was put in charge of old Fort Boise in 1818 and traveled through the area. Permanent settlement began in the early 1860s, after gold discoveries in the Boise Basin brought people over the established stage and pack train routes. Two of these trails joined at the Payette River north of the present river bridge in Emmett.

In 1883 James Wardwell had the town platted, and in 1900 the town was incorporated as Emmett. Later, in March 1902, the Idaho Northern railroad came to the valley.

After the closing of the mines in 1906, the power lines were extended to Emmett. A series of irrigation projects made it possible for more rapid expansion of the town as the major service center for a farming and fruit-growing valley. In the early 1900s fruit packers adopted the label of "Gem of Plenty" because of the fertility of the valley. During the mining era the valley was known as the "garden" for the mining regions.

Until 2001, the city was home to a Boise Cascade manufacturing facility. The Black Canyon diversion dam on the Payette River, built in the early 1920s, is east of the city.

St Mary (RC), Mulberry Street, Manchester, 1848.

By Weightman & Hadfield.

Grade ll listed.

John Grey Weightman (1801-1872).

The Hidden Gem, officially St Mary's Catholic Church, on Mulberry Street, Manchester, England, was originally opened in 1794, with devotion to St Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption, then rebuilt in 1848.

Detail: Windows on the west side in the gallery.

Dedication of the Hidden Gem

The rector of St Chad's, Father Rowland Broomhead, purchased a plot of land near Deansgate in 1794. He quickly set about the task of building a new church. On 30 November 1794, the church was dedicated to St Mary. It was chosen as a symbol of the original parish church in Manchester.

Collapse of the roof

In 1833, the rector of the Hidden Gem, Father Henry Gillow, decided that the building was looking tired. He enlisted the help of some of the congregation to have the church re-roofed and re-decorated. It was to be tremendous folly not to have had the work overseen by a master builder.

At lunchtime on 8 August 1835, a strange breaking sound could be heard. On looking up people were alarmed to see a crack forming in the dome above the altar. The church was locked up and at 11 pm the whole dome and part of the roof collapsed, damaging much of the interior of the church. Services were moved to Lloyd Street, and the search started for a new site for the church.

Hidden Gem rebuilt

Father Gillow died in the Manchester typhus epidemic of 1837. Any plans for a new site were put on hold, and the decision was taken to rebuild St Mary's on the existing site. Two architects were consulted, Richard Lane, the architect of Salford Town Hall and the Friends Meeting House, and Augustus Pugin. Richard Lane's design was chosen at a cost of £265 17s 0d. (Pugin had been paid £138 3s 6d). The architect chosen to oversee the work was Matthew Ellison Hadfield, who later went on to build Salford Cathedral and the new St Chad's Church in Cheetham Hill. St Mary's Church was entirely demolished and the new St Mary's was formally opened in October 1848. The church's design is a blend of Norman, Gothic and Byzantine detail; Pugin himself said that the building 'shows to what depth of error even good men fall, when they go whoring after strange styles.'

Exterior and interior

Externally, the Hidden Gem is built of plain red brick, with an ornate bell tower, stone-dressed church windows, and an entrance marked out with a fine stone doorway, which is finely carved and depicts two Angelic Hosts bearing a medallion of Agnus Dei. A hand above forms the sign of the Ascension of Christ. The inscription is "Ascendamus in montem Domini. Et adoremus in loco Sancto eius" a construction of two bible verses: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord",(Isaiah 2:3) and "Praise Him in His Holy places". (Psalms 150:1)

Internally, the visitor will find majestic Victorian carving. The High Altar is made of marble, finely carved and life size images of Our Lady, St Stephen, St Patrick, St Peter, St John, St Hilda, St Augustine and St Joseph. Central to this above the tabernacle is Christ bearing the Sacred Heart. The Stations of the Cross were painted in 1994 by artist Norman Adams and are in a striking expressionist style.

The Argo Gold Mine and Mill, at 2350 Riverside Dr, is a former mine and gold that opened on April 1, 1913 at the entrance of the 4.6-mile Newhouse Tunnel, later called the Argo Tunnel. The Tunnel was built between 1893 and 1910 to drain the gold mines in Virginia Canyon, Gilpin Gulch, Russell Gulch, Quartz Hill, Nevadaville, and Central City. The mill, one of the largest and most modern in Colorado, was built by R.E. Shimer to strip the valuable metals like gold, silver, copper and lead from the ore extracted from the tunnel. Following a flooding accident in 1943 that left four miners dead, the tunnel was closed, and Argo Mill ceased operations.

The five-story mill sat abandoned until 1976 when it was purchased by James N. Maxwell, who renovated it and opened it to the public as a museum. The bottom level of the mill serves as a museum displaying mining and milling artifacts, old payroll records, milling receipts, and old photographs. After touring the Dougle Eagle mine, and the Argo Mill, visitors can pan for gold and gems.
