On the 17th December 2022 the 'SS Gem State' (1966, 17,729DWT) is seen in Tor Bay. Built for American President Line as the cargo liner 'President Monroe' the vessel is now part a crane ship in the US Military Sealift Command Ready Reserve fleet based in California. The ship is powered by two steam turbines and the last time it was activated was during the Iraq conflict and has recently been operating in Germany. It is thought to heading back to states and perhaps is sheltering for a few days? Anyhow a very nice early Christmas present.
Lycoperdon perlatum
This small, white to brown, pear- to top-shaped puffball, 1 to 2-3/8 inches across and 1-1/4 to 3 inches tall, is easy to recognize because it's covered with tiny spines. It develops a pore on top when mature, through which the spores escape. It rests on a stalk-like, chambered, white to brown base.
My Favorite Star
OW Geminorum, AKA OW Gem, is a star in the constellation Gemini. Back in 1988 I discovered it to be an eclipsing binary, two stars revolving around one another. Even though the two stars are much bigger than our sun, 20 and 30 times the sun's mass, they are too far away to be seen separately. They appear to us as one star.
Every 3 1/2 years one star passes in front of the other from our point of view, ie it eclipses the other. Hence the term Eclipsing Binary.
During these eclipses the light we see dims considerably over a 2 week period. OW Gem is now deep in eclipse. I have put together a short animation showing the star at maximum and minimum light...
