Came across this old man selling gems on the street. Simple set-up, a folding plastic table, a table cloth and you're up. Those white gems actually came from the heartwood of that stump there in the middle. He cuts them up and polished it into that shape. It's very common for malay men to buy the stone/gem separately and the binding them on silver rings. Those gems in the special little boxes have "stories" with them, and the price can hit up to USD30~70 per piece.

I had never been to or drove by Gem, Alberta, before today. While on my way by on the highway South of here, I saw this old beauty and since the beginning of my afternoon was with elevators at Sharples, Kirkpatrick, and Dorothy, I figured why not take a very slight detour to get a couple of this one.
Luckily, another photographer on Flickr met the owner in 2010 and was able to provide this information.
It was built in 1904 at Countess, Alberta. In 1972 it was one of the first elevators closed and moved 16 miles away to just south of Gem where it has resided ever since. This elevator is still used for active grain storage. The lack of available replacement parts forced Mr. Plett to convert the leg to electric power in 2009.

I have driven by Meadow Fork Falls many times and didn't even know. I really enjoyed shooting this less popular waterfall and it was definitely worth the short off trail hike.

I found this little gem of a spot last night scouting out locations to shoot streams or cascades against a backdrop of stars. Well, it won't work for the stars, but it certainly is a beauty of a spot all on its own. The best part for me is the proximity to my house. It's about 5 minutes from my house! I can't wait to explore this area some more in the spring or fall when the waters will be flowing with more force.

My first go at gems. The paper wasn't fabulous, sadly, which made it a bit harder than it might have been. They are, however, a great excuse to buy better coloured pencils.
