possible design idea for a concrete bowl...bought these gorgeous glass gems today and thought they'd look great in a large birdbath stretching from one side to the other across the centre.

Gem Chrysocolla, natural, durable, stable, unique, colored by traces of copper and exceptionally translucent material.

OK - there's a story behind the next few photos, which were all taken at this shop, here in Candolim - and it does not involve me receiving any gemstones!!

The day we were due to go to Mumbai, Bob's camera broke. It's a compact digital camera, about three years old, and suddenly the shutter would not stay open. The frustration!!! Luckily I still had mine ... but even so, we are both so used to having our own cameras.

Our first idea was to quickly buy a cheap camera, even just to use in Mumbai. But we couldn't find a camera shop ... now, Khan's shop is right next door to the internet cafe and underneath our favourite restaurant. Several times while waiting for me to finish checking my emails, Bob sat chatting to Khan's colleague. He enquired of him as to where he could buy a camera in Candolim, and the chap (I'm afraid I didn't get his name) said that his friend Khan could fix anything.

It was too late for the Mumbai trip (we managed with mine!) but figured there was nothing to lose by letting him have a go. I have to admit, I had my doubts. How wrong was I! That man is a genius! By the time we got back, it was fixed. He's never had any training ... nor any schooling ... he just sits down and starts taking things apart logically. What a gift. He put in a new IC chip (I'll bet you can't even buy those in England) and a new spring ... cost hardly anything ... bingo.

It's the one thing about places like India - necessity is the mother of invention. If you can't buy it, you fix it.

In the process of testing the camera, Khan took a few shots around his shop. "You can show everybody", he said ... so, everybody ... here you are! Khan Gems & Jewellery. Top stuff, nice guys, and they even fix cameras ...

Minerals of the Smithsonian

Had so much fun making this.

Somewhat cheap, plastic Halloween skull decoration, spray paint, superglue and gemstones.

I love it!

Gem mining sluice

New France hamlet, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA

A large gem mining sluice activity was built in winter 2016 in front of Trapper Dave's General Store, replacing a much smaller one that can be seen in this photo.

The focal of this pendant necklace is a stunningly beautiful, incredibly gorgeous AAA (gem) grade Swiss Blue Topaz faceted heart briolette, measuring 13 x 13.5mm in diameter.

A delicious bouquet of gems comprising tangerine and sunshine yellow songea sapphires, mystic pink quartz and sweet pink tourmalines, golden imperial topaz, cherry red rhodolite garnet and burgundy seed pearls top the focal. Finally, a perfectly faceted rondelle of London Blue Topaz keeps the cluster and focal securely in place and the pendant completes with a 14K coiled wired bail. The pendant glides easily along a 925 sterling silver Venetian box chain.

The pendant measures about 1.4” (3.5cm) and the chain measures 18” (45.7cm).

Well, this has been a long time coming but my vase is finally complete. It was an early experiment utilising glass gems and placing two substrates together to create a unique shape and an interesting backing for the lower area of the vase.

NHTSA Ruling Clears the Way for GEM Vehicle Street Use

The GEM Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) is included in a classification of federally approved "low-speed vehicles" which can be driven on community streets posted at 35 mph or less* if they meet certain safety criteria, according to a ruling announced in June, 1998 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The ruling affects NEVs and other electric vehicles that have top speeds of 20 to 25 miles an hour. (GEM cars travel at speeds up to 25 mph.)

Under the rule, electric vehicles, including thousands of golf carts now used for transportation in retirement communities and on golf courses, are required to have seat belts, headlights, windshield wipers and other safety devices before they can be used for street travel.

GEM cars, however, already come with anchored three-point safety belts, headlamps and windshield wipers as standard equipment. The GEM car's other standard safety features include four-wheel hydraulic brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, automotive safety glass, front-wheel drive, taillights, front and rear turn signals and stop lamps.

GEM cars are the first multi-purpose NEV automotive engineered for both street and turf use. The NHTSA ruling was intended to set up safety criteria for low-speed vehicles (LSVs) and provide individual states with the uniform regulatory guidelines. The ruling does not alter the ability of states and local governments to decide for themselves whether to permit on-road use of LSVs.

Ok, i have placed the gems in the garden bowl to check the design but now i'm not sure if i like it! Would love some feedback. I guess i can't do much about it seeing as the bowl is concrete and a little too set to carve to a different shape. Hmmm....sorry about the crappy pic...taken on my phone...maybe it'll look better once they're grouted. Ideas for grout colour...dark gray, black, white, same as bowl? Arrrgghhh.... lol

Photos from our backpacking trip to Gem Lake. It turned out to be the hottest day on record an I got suffered from altitude sickness before we could set up camp at 9,000 feet.

These shots were taken on my Belair using cross processed 120 film in the camera's wide view.

When he isn't being a bicycle courier, Trumpeter is Jazzing up the streets of Sydney CBD every morning. Next time you notice him, stand a while and listen. Nothing quite matches hearing Trumpeter play Gary Jules' Mad World in the middle of Sydney's banking district.

In his own words “I really just decided that there’s more to life than sitting around, yapping to your mates and drinking coffee,” he explains. “I was wasting my time when I could otherwise have been doing something productive. I’d been playing trumpet since I left school so I decided to start playing in and around town every day – to see how it went.” - What a guy.

A display of wholesale faceted gems, this box at a dealer in the Riverpark venue of the Tucson Rock and Gem Show. I was surprised to see some of these specimens in faceted form. The bright blue "hauyne" gems are particularly striking. Ooooh, I'd like to get a lot of these and have them made to jewelry. This one is very interesting to see in the largest size, for the ID and detail shows decently, despite each sparkly gem being safely inside the little cases.
