G533 leads CLF4 and G511 north through Menangle with 5MB7 Melbourne to Brisbane freight.

If some of these photos look familiar, they probably are - I'm organising my photos from 2008, and taking the opportunity to rework some of them and either upload for the first time, or replace older photos.

G533 leads 4814, 4836 and G535 north through Wyee with 3498N loaded Canola bound for Cargills on Kooragang Island. G533 and G535 are both owned by AWB, and are used by El Zorro to transport AWB wheat in NSW and Victoria. The two 48 class are owned by Junee Railway Workshops, and are leased out to El Zorro.

I'm not sure if I was aware of it at the time, but the Sydney to Melbourne Intercapital Daylight express had less than two weeks left before the service was withdrawn. Returning from a couple of week railfanning in New South Wales I took the opportunity to ride the train on my way home to Adelaide.

On 20 August 1991, at Junee NSW, there was just enough time to hop down and grab a quick shot of G518 on its train before hopping back on and continuing my journey, something you wouldn't try today!

Cresting the last little climb towards their desination, G532 leads G512 towards Ultima on Qube's 9177 empty Ultima Hay service. The train would go head first into the siding before doing a main line run around.

8226 leads G520, G528 and 8212 up Minimbah Bank with a loaded coal train. At the time it was not unusual to see quad 3000hp locomotives on the older 120t hopper rakes.

4835 empty ore train can be seen descending the bank in the background.

Given the recent dependance on LDP Class, it was unusual to see 7MB7 QRNational Melbourne to Brisbane freight passing Glenlee with the combination of G534, G516, X54 and LDP001. X54 has recently been seen in Sydney working the Yennora to Glenlee trip trains.

Due to recent restrictions on the use of modern LDP and SCT class with older locomotives, RailCorp restricts the use of LDP class to operating only with other LDP Class, hence why it was dead attached. X54 would have been on the train to assist with the load, as it was the longest QRNational train I've seen in a while.

NR48, NR103, G537 & G526 lead 7AM5 downgrade through the Moorabool curves near Lovely Banks.

NR48 is one of two NRs with no Pacific National writing on the side. NR81 being the other. 06/02/22

Near Yorkeys Crossing, South Australia, Pacific National (PN) locos G529/G536/G537 provide the 'hook and pull' for SCT Logistics 4MP9 service from Melbourne to Perth on 15 February 2006.

Reflecting the changes the Australian rail industry was undergoing at the time, the three locos still carry their Freight Australia (FA) branding. Originally built for the Victorian State Government freight operator V/Line, they were sold to the private FA consortium in 1999, and were again sold to PN in 2004.

SCT took over haulage of their own trains using their own locos from 2008 onward.

A loaded Aurizon grain train from Tailem Bend, train number 2182, crosses the flooded Murray River bridge at Murray Bridge with locos G533,CLF6,ALF23,ALF18,V544 on 26-1-23

BL30, BL27 & G539 climb through Bell Park, Geelong, having just dumped a load of grain at the Geelong Grain Loop. 7735V would arrive at Anakie Loop shortly after. Before departing on 7MC6 to Oaklands, NSW later in the evening. 19/02/22

G522, XR557 and X43 climb away from Clunes towards Tourello with a very late 9102 loaded container train from Merbein, just North of Mildura, to Appleton Dock.

G514, BRM002 & RL301 lead SSRs daily 5446 Narrabri to Carrington loaded grain. Seen rounding the curve at Wingen.

G514 was unfortunately one of four locomotives damaged in the Rockview (Old Junee) derailment on the 8th March, 2023, colliding with a truck at an unprotected level crossing. Fortunately, all three people involved are in a stable condition. 17/02/23

G540 and 8154 cruise through the hills away from Wandong as 3MC1 empty grain train bound for Cootamundra and beyond for loading.

G513 is seen here at Kogarah leading 44206, B61 and G514 south with NW08 loaded coal from Newstan to Inner Harbour in pouring rain.

SSR has picked up a three month contract to haul export coal for Newstan Colliery to Inner Harbour. This is in addition to the regular export rake already hauled by Pacific National to and from Inner Harbour.

In a scene reminiscent of a few years ago, G516 leads CLP13 and CLF7 north through North Strathfield with 5MB7. Prior to the delivery of the LDP Class, it was not uncommon to see a G Class paired with two or three older locomotives (CLF, CLP, X, 421, 422) on QRNational east coast services.

G535 and VL352 power through Robertson with an empty El Zorro/AWB grain service from Inner Harbour.

G516, 42202 and CLP13 slowly roll through the refuge at North Strathfield with 5BM7 Superfreighter from Brisbane.

I nearly missed this shot, thanks to the slow speed of this train, as there was a northbound interurban approaching the platform that ended up crossing the locos at the end of the platform. Funnily enough, it might have been the slow speed of the train that ensured I got the shot, as the signal at the northern end of the platform only cleared when the locos entered the platform*, which meant the itnerurban was travelleing slower than it normally would.

* Southbound trains cross from the up main to the down refuge at Concord West, which is just around the bend from North Strathfield, which involves crossing the down main.

SSR G514 + G513 & C503. This train had been banked from Newstan to Sulphide Jcn by GM27 + 48s35 + 48s33 & GM22.

P.N. Locos 8169 & 81xx.

The standard-gauge Sydney Express (and companion Melbourne Express) was the last hurrah for locomotive hauled passenger trains on the Sydney to Melbourne corridor.

V/Line EMD unit G525 waits to head north from Melbourne's Spencer Street station during July 1993. The service was withdrawn In November that year and replaced with XPTs, which could never match the rundown glamour of the Express.

Following a very late running MS9 service, G533 leads MB7 north into Sydney, assisted by CLF1 and G534. G533 is on lease from SCT, rendered surplus with the delivery of 15 SCT Class locomotives earlier in the year.

G535 leads an X Class north through Menangle shortly after sunrise with a late running 5MS9 Melbourne to Sydney (Yennora) freight.

8257 leads G520, 8107 and 8230 across the Georges River at Como with an empty coal train, passing a CityRail Tangara set bound for Sutherland. The empty coal train has just come down the grade from Sutherland, and will now attack the hill up to Hurstville.

On Friday, 24 January 2025, QUBE Logistics’ 1421S operates a freight run at Long Plains. The service is led by QUBE units RL310/G521 as the sparsely loaded train bound for Bowmans approaches the small township, north of the Adelaide area.
