The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, built on the orders of Prussian king Frederick William II after the (temporarily) successful restoration of order during the early Batavian Revolution. One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, it was built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, which used to be capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

It is located in the western part of the city centre of Berlin within Mitte, at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building, which houses the German parliament (Bundestag). The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which led directly to the royal City Palace of the Prussian monarchs.

Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often a site for major historical events and is today considered not only as a symbol of the tumultuous history of Europe and Germany, but also of European unity and peace.

Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. Its 3,723,914 (2018) inhabitants make it the second most populous city proper of the European Union after London. The city is one of Germany's 16 federal states. It is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, and contiguous with its capital, Potsdam. The two cities are at the center of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which is, with 6,004,857 (2015) inhabitants and an area of 30,370 square km, Germany's third-largest metropolitan region after the Rhine-Ruhr and Rhine-Main regions.

Berlin straddles the banks of the River Spree, which flows into the River Havel (a tributary of the River Elbe) in the western borough of Spandau. Among the city's main topographical features are the many lakes in the western and southeastern boroughs formed by the Spree, Havel, and Dahme rivers (the largest of which is Lake Müggelsee). Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. About one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes. The city lies in the Central German dialect area, the Berlin dialect being a variant of the Lusatian-New Marchian dialects.

First documented in the 13th century and situated at the crossing of two important historic trade routes, Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417–1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933), and the Third Reich (1933–1945). Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality in the world. After World War II and its subsequent occupation by the victorious countries, the city was divided; West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989) and East German territory. East Berlin was declared capital of East Germany, while Bonn became the West German capital. Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin once again became the capital of all of Germany.

Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media and science. Its economy is based on high-tech firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. Berlin serves as a continental hub for air and rail traffic and has a highly complex public transportation network. The metropolis is a popular tourist destination. Significant industries also include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, clean tech, biotechnology, construction and electronics.

Berlin is home to world-renowned universities, orchestras, museums, and entertainment venues, and is host to many sporting events. Its Zoological Garden is the most visited zoo in Europe and one of the most popular worldwide. With the world's oldest large-scale movie studio complex, Berlin is an increasingly popular location for international film productions. The city is well known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a very high quality of living. Since the 2000s Berlin has seen the emergence of a cosmopolitan entrepreneurial scene.

This is the Golden Gate Bridge, just after sunset from the Coastal Ridge Trail in the Marin Headlands.

I took my family to San Francisco and decided to go to Marin headlands for a view of golden Gate Bridge and City on unusually warm day on last day of September . My 10 year old daughter and me decided (leaving my wife and little one to do some shopping) to hike to the Coastal Ridge Trail viewpoint (little over a mile of steep elevation). It was beautiful there, the views were incredible. I took few shots just after sunset and descended back to our car.

Gate - March 2020

Sometimes....

People go to great efforts to keep the countryside open and accessible.

Sometimes it goes un-noticed and sometimes the simplest and often "invisible" solutions work very well indeed. :-)

Thanks to all the farmers and land owners who make the gates, the fences, the stiles, kissing gates and access ways we all enjoy and probably take for granted - and to the crafts people who make them using traditional skills... Thank you! :-)

In an alley, in the city, I found this graffiti on a fence behind a fence. As I wrote that, I realize it sounds like an ancient riddle but it's not. It's just another photo. I particularly liked the three zones: natural wood, graffiti, yellow wood. There's also the lines. The shapes. The patterns.

The side of the Golden Gate Bridge from the San Francisco side. I would have loved to have taken a "matching" photo from the other (left) side too, but only bikes are allowed on the path on that side, and I didn't have a bike :( ... I considered mugging a bike rider, but thought better of it LOL!

The Green Grille is the main entrance to Sanssouci Castle Park and is located at the end of the Allee to Sanssouci. This begins as one of three beam-shaped streets on Luisenplatz. The gate was designed by Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse and was built in 1854 in connection with the construction of the Peace Church (Potsdam). The name is derived from the colour with which the grid is painted. As an additional decoration, individual struts and tips are refined with gold leaf. The iron lattice bears the initials of Frederick William IV (1795 - 1861)

A Wicket Gate at Shrewsbury Castle in Shropshire.

A wicket gate is a small defensive pedestrian door made of heavy timber.

The door is framed by red sandstone blocks, characteristic of the castle's military architecture.

It likely served to allow servants, guards, and officials to pass through while keeping the main gates closed for security.
