Flying around Denali storms when we came upon the most breathtaking sight...it looked like the threshold to heaven.
In 1924 Adolf Hitler spent 264 days incarcerated in Landsberg after being convicted of treason following the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich the previous year. During his imprisonment, Hitler dictated and then wrote his book 'Mein Kampf' with assistance from his deputy, Rudolf Hess.
During the occupation of Germany by the Allies after World War II, the US Army designated the prison as War Criminal Prison No. 1 to hold convicted Nazi war criminals.
Between 1945 and 1946, the prison housed a total of 110 prisoners convicted at the Nuremberg trials, a further 1416 war criminals from the Dachau trials and 18 prisoners convicted in the Shanghai trials.
In five and half years, Landsberg prison was the place of execution of nearly 300 condemned war criminals. 259 death sentences were conducted by hanging and 29 by firing squad. Executions were carried out expeditiously. In May 1946 twenty eight former SS guards from Dachau were hanged within a four-day period.
Bodies that were not claimed were buried in unmarked graves in the cemetery next to the Spöttingen chapel.
This shot of the Lions Gate Bridge is taken from the north side, a more unusual vantage point for this bridge. Getting here requires quite literally parking on the wrong side of the tracks!
I've tried to take this photo a few times before, but it's really tricky to get the tide at just the right height -- too low and the reflections aren't complete, too high and the water isn't smooth.
Earlier this week, I managed to get it just right, and although it involved me getting wet feet, and having to move backwards a couple of times as the tide came in, I was able to get the complete bridge reflected at sunset.
Not only that, but the setting moon moved perfectly into frame just as the lights of the bridge came on -- I couldn't have planned it any better!
The bridge is really towering above you from this vantage point, so I needed an extremely wide field of view to capture the whole thing, including the reflections. Even my wide-angle lens couldn't get it all in, so this is a three-column by two-row panoramic photo.
Returning in the dark to where I had parked the car, I was pleased to discover it was still there, although less pleased to have to wait twenty minutes with wet feet while a complex shunting procedure on the train tracks prevented me from getting back across!
Many, many Moons ago when I were a young apprentice the very first job we went on was taking down this pair of gates for restoration. Someone had managed to back their car into them. They were stripped, straightened and had some of the leafwork, the ovals and collars replaced (see detail) as well as the strip with the rosettes on down the middle put on. We also put the automation motors in the ground..

The water towers decayed and were taken down circa 1978.

These tiled San Francisco steps were created by 220 neighbors in Golden Gate Heights. Just one of the neatest neighborhood projects I've seen. It's a heck of a climb actually, but the detail is incredible, just a little hidden SF treasure.

A little bit of time spent lining this one up but didn't turn out as planned. Probably too many buttons, switches and levers with different angles - probably? Thanks to Phil for getting involved in my pointless experiments.

A Wicket Gate at Shrewsbury Castle in Shropshire.
A wicket gate is a small defensive pedestrian door made of heavy timber.
The door is framed by red sandstone blocks, characteristic of the castle's military architecture.
It likely served to allow servants, guards, and officials to pass through while keeping the main gates closed for security.

The Independence Gate (Hangul: 독립문; Hanja: 獨立門) is a memorial gate located in Seoul, South Korea. The gate was built following the First Sino-Japanese War to inspire a spirit of independence away from Korea's previous status as a Chinese tributary state, which was declared by the Treaty of Shimonoseki. It was designed by Soh Jaipil, a Korean political activist.
Today, 11 November we remember, we honour those who served and those who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War I in particular and in general too, those who served in all wars. This special gate sits outside the front of Kelvin Grove State School in Brisbane. Although the weapons were laid down and physical engagement ended on 11 November, 1918 often 1919 is used as the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended the state of war was not signed until 28 June 1919.

Every photographer that visits Yosemite is obligated to set up a tripod and take a shot at this iconic location known as "Gates of the Valley."
I've stood there drinking in this view more than a few times. It is always mesmerizing, but perhaps never so much as in the last few moments of the day when the fading sun transforms the dull grey granite mountains into a riot of molten gold.

"Golden Gate Splendor:" All I could think of when I arrived at this spot and took in the view of the canyon with its rich golden rocks and vibrant foliage below was that it was as if these majestic towering gates were opening up to a sea of color rising between them.
