The front gates of ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands, set to be thrown open to the European public on Sunday 2 October.
In place for more than half a century, the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk on the North Sea coast is ESA’s largest establishment, focused on developing technology, planning missions and testing satellites.
A full-scale model of the ERS-1 Earth-observing satellite, launched in 1991, is placed to the right.
October’s annual ESTEC Open Day will be your chance to explore the sprawling facility, meet astronauts, scientists and mission designers and see special exhibits and actual space hardware.
This annual event takes place as part of the Netherlands’ national Weekend of Science, as well as World Space Week.

By the celandines was this open gate. The surrounding wall and gateway were festooned with ivy, and dry leaves from autumn lay on the garden path.
I did peep through the gate. The path curved around the bushes and disappeared. Behind the wall lies extensive gardens and a large house (I think it is now a Nursing Home).
A gateway like this inevitably recalls a Secret Garden or some child's story of magic or danger or mystery (or all three).

The Golden Gate Bridge shortly after sunset from Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands in California.
The huge Imperial City which is 2.5 K on its perimeter is filled with courtyards and doors and arches. Each building was designed to serve the Emperor in specialized ways. The gates were always decorated by reliefs and mosaics created in the prime colors. All of the elements of the earth an also be found in the complex.

I continued my journey and finally arrived at the city gates.
After their little encounter with me, the guards had tightened security.
Everybody was to turn out their pockets.
Damn! I would have to find another way into the city.
Well, just a minor setback.
However I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being followed .....
