Washington City Paper Morning Roundup 9/02/2008
The version from "Golden Rooster".
Influenced by the British colonial days....localised "Western food" is defined by a lot of deep-frying or pan-grilling. The main protein is usually served with a fried bread roll or a slice of garlic bread, some form of salad, usually coleslaw, fries and baked beans.
My perennial favourite is always the "chicken cutlet" - a flattened out piece of chicken thigh meat, breaded and then deep-fried. The crunchy exterior yielded a usually soft, moist and tender interior, for the lovely textural contrast.
And as per most local consumers, copious amount of sweet chilli sauce (and/or ketchup) is squirted or poured over everything - trust me, it really does make the dish tastes better!
Back again in the Block House, which does not compare to any other steak house chain. The meat here just doesn't taste so blunt, so watery.
For around 18 Euros this was again a difficult cut, but a little more elegant than the previously photographed Maredo piece. Yet, tastewise, this was one of my most disappointing visits to the Block House. I don't know if they missed a preparation or the financial crisis calls for cows that are fed cheaper food, but this steak - although tender and soft like a filet - didn't have the expected oomph taste. The first time I had to sprinkle extra salt and the (addictive) Block House pepper on top. Maybe my taste buds were a little off that day I don't know.
Service was great and it's a really comfy place. But this time I was eyeing the mixed grill platter on my neighbors' table.
Super soft and fluffy, these Easy Garlic Cheese Rolls make a delicious addition to your dinner or breakfast table.

Creamy Pasta- Curly fettuccine with creamy prawn sauce
And Garlic Bread (inspired by Fettuccine polo 'e funghi)
This was a test- A successful one at that! :) I'll definitely be making this again! :D
Recipe (Requested by tfabas) I don't have the quantities as usually cook by eye. But this recipe serves 4-6 people
Serves 4-6 People
Ingredients:
200g Raw Prawns
3 rashers of bacon- chopped into little squares
Mixed herbs, Basil, Oragano, Salt & Pepper
Olive oil
1 packet Fettuccine pasta
3 cloves of garlic- crushed
Onions- chopped finely
3 stalks of spring onion
Curly Parsley
600ml Cream (full or skim, doesn't matter)
A slice of butter
Mushrooms
1 Tea spoon of tomato past
1/2 cup of chicken stock
a splash of white wine
Method
I'd start off by boiing the fettuccine pasta in a pot of water with a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and cook for abou 15mins.
While that's going, in another pot, add 2 teaspoons of the oil. Once heated, add the bacon and cook till sealed or a little brown. Then add garlic & onion. Cook till onion is opaque add mushrooms till sealed. Then add the raw prawns- cook till they change colour. Then add the cream. Turn down the heat and simmer for 10 mins. Add the butter and melt through. Then sprinkle some basil, oragano and mixed herbs and add a pinch of salt & cracked pepper. Then add a splash of white wine and 1/2 cup of chicken stock. Simmer for another 20 mins on low heat. Once done, add freshly chopped parsley and spring onion. Simmer for 5 mins and turn off heat. Add the pasta into the cream sauce, mix and serve with some parsley & garlic/herb bread and a nice glass of white wine :)
Again, this was a test but it sure worked out well- ask my wife! ;)

One of my boyfriend's favorite meals :) I like to make this for a special occasion meal and serve it with our favorite Kedem brand sparkling Blush grape juice - soooo delicious!
pasta ingredients:
1 package Barilla linguine noodles
1 jar Bertolli "creamy alfredo" sauce (1 jar is enough for two servings if you prefer a heavy amount of sauce like we do)
1. cook pasta according to package directions and top with the heated sauce.
scampi ingredients:
8 "colossal" size raw frozen white shrimp (16-20 count size) per person/serving
6 tbsp olive oil (I prefer Bertolli)
1/2 tbsp minced fresh garlic *
1 tsp parsley *
1/2 tbsp Old Bay seasoning *
(*the amount of spices listed is per serving, so you will need to multiply the spices depending on how many servings of the sprimp scampi you are making)
1. Pat defrosted shrimps with some paper toweling (this helps to reduce any spattering when you sautee them in the oil).
2. Pour the olive oil into a non-stick skillet and add the spices, then add the shrimp. I like to sort of dredge them in the oil and spices so that each side of the shrimps are coated. I then sautee them for about six minutes (three minutes on each side).
serves: 2
*I buy the kind of shrimp that are already peeled and "deveined" but just have the tails on them. They're sold at BJs Wholesale Club in 2lb bags.
For New Year's Eve dinner I cracked open Bake and Destroy - a Christmas gift from my sis - and tried the Spaghetti Cake. Flipping amazing. You cook the pasta, mix it with a cup (or in my case, two) of the pasta sauce (mushrooms and Kalamata olives, mmmmm!) and the tofu-cashew ricotta cheese, transfer it to a casserole dish, top with breadcrumbs and nooch, and bake. Serve with the rest of the pasta sauce and a side of garlic bread and feel like you've died and gone to heaven. The end.
Next time I think I might even skip the oven-baked part - the pasta tastes even better right off the stove. When combined, the ricotta and red sauce form a really interesting sauce that's reminiscent of alfredo sauce mixed with marinara. This effect is lost a little during baking, since it soaks into the pasta and dries out a bit. (Otherwise you wouldn't be able to cut it like a cake, silly!) Either way, I am in love.
Week 4: A simple bolognese sauce used in a lasagna with ricotta, mozzarella and parmesan, accompanied by garlic garlic (yes, twice!) toast.
Cheesy garlic bread made with a roasted garlic spread (roasted garlic with butter, basil and oregano). Bread used is sourdough.
Today I am hung over. Way way too much to drink last night after the awards ceremony. Add that to the cold that I had in Blackpool and I feel rotten.
Also, Rachel has broken the handle on our oven, so we can't use it, meaning take away is the order of the day. I got a large pizza intending to have some of it for lunch tomorrow, but I decided to 'choose change' and go for a pizza with a stuffed crust and base, and it is not good. Not at all happy, it tasted yukky. Note to self not to order that one again!
Celebrations call for a visit in the Block House which has no doubt the best standard quality of argentian steaks.
Today I didn't care too much for the ribeye, the regular rumpsteak had to do it and - of course- I wasn't dissapointed. The block house and its steaks move into a zone of comfy foods; food that puts you in a certain mood, reminds you of things, and - in the least - enjoy life and food.
I can't wait to eat this delicious bread! Check out Food Lane if you want to eat some too!

(Stella's) I got my usual, the Basil Pesto Ravioli (came with breadsticks and a side salad for $9.75). I love the cheese and olives they put on the salad. The garlic bread was just perfect today. I have noticed that this pasta dish a bit too bland for my tastes, so I opted to use their salt, pepper, parmesan, and red peppers to spice it up a bit. This made it perfect for me. I also wish there was more of the pesto sauce on the raviolis so that I could dip my breadsticks in them, but the plate is all dried up so I just drank my water... Overall, we both enjoyed lunch today and will be returning soon.
