I was so happy to see this because I thought it was a new GTO. I came a little closer and it was a HGTE :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( There should be a law to stop GTB/HGTE owners putting a black roof on their car.

The Pontiac GTO was built by Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1964 to 1974. In early 1963, General Motors' management issued an edict banning divisions from involvement in auto racing. At the time, Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance, and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac's young, visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance.
Pontiac engineers, who included John DeLorean took a larger 389 cu in (6.4 L) Pontiac V8 engine from the full-sized Pontiac Catalina and Bonneville and put it in an upcoming redesigned Tempest. By promoting the big-engine Tempest as a special high-performance model, they could appeal to the speed-minded youth market (which had also been recognized by Ford Motor Company's Lee Iacocca, who was at that time preparing the sporty Ford Mustang variant of the second generation Ford Falcon compact).
The GTO violatied GM's policy limiting the A-body intermediate line to a maximum engine displacement of 330 cu in (5.4 L). Since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, Pontiac management considered it to fall into a loophole in the policy. Initial production was limited to 5,000 units as there was concerns, even in Pontiac, that there wouldn't be a market for this car. Their concerns were not needed as the 1964 model had orders of over 10,000 prior to January 1, 1964 and actual number sold for the 1964 GTO package was 32,450 cars. The GTO went on to become one of the most legendary cars of the muscle car era.

Pontiac GTO 1966. By 1964 the time was right for muscle cars (and Pony cars), and John DeLorean at GM wanted Pontiac to have a slice of the action. So taking the A-body Tempest Le Mans, he found a loophole in the GM regulations which forbid small cars having big engines and created the GTO package which showed a 4-barrel 325 bhp 6,364cc (389) under the hood. There were other styling and trim options and some engineering to match the power, apart from retaining drum brakes. Sales of 5,000 units were expected, but were exceeded 6-fold. The 1965 Tempest range (including GTO) got longer, styling got more extreme, and the car got vertical headlamps and a hood scoop.In 1966 the GTO finally became an official model line, and the Tempest body became longer, more curvy and with a coke bottle waist line. For 1967 there was an optional 400 cu.in. engine and more styling changes. A new car was brought out for 1968.

It has been a while, in fact it's been a while since I actually completed this model. But after being distracted for one reason or another, here we are! A 288 GTO! Cetainly a personal favourite Ferrari of mine. While the F40 is the icon, the undisputed King, the GTO is certianly close by in the rankings. A homologation special from a race series that died before the GTO was officially born, this group B turbo charged wedge is a lovely looking thing. It was great to try and reanimate it!

I know the most photographed GTO in London but I just had to post this shot ! Haven't been to London in a while so am using old shots :( Hopefully going next week though !

Ferrari 288 GTO after the 2009 Concorso Italiano
My friend was lucky enough to get to drive this into the show for the owner, who couln't attend. When the show was over, we had the choice to sit in (uphill) traffic for an hour, or hang out for an hour and then have an open road. So we drove down to the end of the course and decided to do an impromptu photoshoot. Wouldn't you?
