About Westwood Plateau
WESTWOOD PLATEAU…Experiences Above & Beyond
When award-winning golf architect Michael Hurdzan, Golf World Magazine’s 1997 Architect of the Year, sets out to design a course he says that he wants to “create a ‘Wow’ effect for golfers.” At his Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club, named ‘Best New Course in Canada in 1996’ by SCOREGolf Magazine, Hurdzan created his patented “Wow” effect on virtually every hole.
As a result, there is no ‘signature’ hole at the spectacular layout on Eagle Mountain because each hole stands alone. Yet each hole bears Hurdzan’s distinctive signature. “This is a magical piece of ground,” said Hurdzan. “When we built the course, the whole intent was to keep the great views, keep the special ethereal feeling and still create as wide a course as we could so that the average golfer could enjoy it.” Hurdzan not only achieved his lofty goal, he exceeded it. On this magical Coquitlam plateau 30 minutes east and 1,300 feet above Vancouver, the golf values are as pure as the snow on the distant mountain peaks. Little wonder that in 1999, Golf Digest called Westwood Plateau: “The best game in town.”
Whether playing from the back tees at 6,770 yards or from any of the other three tee boxes that gradually shorten the course to 5,514 yards, players are confronted by a singular challenge on each hole – deciding whether the view is more striking from the tee or from the green. The ProShot GPS system on each power cart takes the pressure off club selection by displaying precise yardages on easy-to-read screens. It also provides yardages to the hazards; individual tips on playing the hole; updates on your tournament; and ProShot can quickly relay messages in case of emergencies. In addition to the on-cart GPS, you’ll also receive range balls, day locker, bottled water, tee gift, and continental breakfast included in your fees. Other available extras range from transportation via helicopter from downtown Vancouver to fully-stocked personal mini bars on your cart. These above and beyond services helped earn Westwood Plateau ‘5th Best Customer Service in North America’, as ranked by 6500 Golf Digest readers, and Golf Digest’s 4 1/2 - star rating in their Best Places to Play edition.
A fully public facility, Westwood Plateau offers 27 holes of outstanding golf, two distinct restaurants, a nationally recognized teaching academy and a 35,000 square foot clubhouse perfect for corporate entertaining and weddings.
Westwood Plateau’s mission statement is simple – To deliver Above & Beyond experiences through superior service and product quality! We look forward to serving you!

When I flew the Mavic Air drone last year and Dji Mavic Air 2 this year, I marveled at how DJI managed to make a drone so small yet so nimble and easy to fly, that delivered such good video – all at a reasonable price. With the Mavic Mini, DJI has improved on the Air in nearly every aspect. This newer $400 device is even smaller, yet is just as easy to fly, plus it can stay in the air even longer than its predecessor.
While the Mavic Mini can’t shoot 4K video, the footage it captures is every bit as good, and should be more than enough for most casual fliers. It’s now my top pick for the best drone.
DJI Mavic Mini design:
The Mavic Mini’s headline feature is its takeoff weight, 249 grams, which is proudly displayed on the airframe. It’s just a bit less than the 250g (8.8-ounce) threshold at which you’re required to register with the FAA before flying outdoors in the US. It’s even lighter than the DJI Spark, the next-smallest drone in the company’s lineup. Take that, Feds!
DJI did note that adding the propeller guard brings the Mini’s weight above 250 grams, but whatever. The Mini is truly compact, though – more so than DJI’s other drones: The device easily fits in the palm of my hand; you can stuff the Mini in a backpack and still have room for plenty of other stuff.
This doesn’t mean that you can fly the Mini anywhere you choose. You still have to follow the rules as any other drone operator does; you just don’t have to register the device with the FAA.
Features and Specs:
This device is well known for its foldable, compact and easy to transport design.
It offers 40 Mph top rated speed for flights.
Equipped with advanced vision positioning, Glonass and GPS system.
Front Collision Detection.
DJI Mavic has ability to capture videos at 4K resolution level whereas images can be obtained with 12MP sensor.
It can stay in air for 27 minutes whereas maximum range coverage is 4.3 miles only.
You will love to explore its automatic landing and take off functions.
Dji Mavic mini camera specs :
Given that the camera is arguably the most important part of a drone (not for nothing is DJI calling this the Everyday Fly Cam), this writer is happy to report that it’s a little cracker. Granted, it doesn’t support some of the picture and video profile choices of the larger Mavics, but even the standard picture setting is excellent right out of the box.
The Mavic Mini shoots 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second and super crisp 2.7K at up to 30fps. The fact it doesn’t shoot in full 4K is in no way a hindrance because 2.7K is plenty good enough for the average computer monitor and certainly any tablet or phone. Besides, 4K files are so massive (up to several gigabytes for each clip), they tend to take up loads of hard disk space and make editing on anything other than a well-specced computer a stuttering nightmare. And anyway, at this price there had to be some kind of tradeoff.
For those into their photography, the drone’s ½.3” CMOS-equipped camera shoots immaculate 12mp stills that really pop when snapped in good lighting conditions; it isn’t too shabby in low light either. As to be expected, the drone’s little mechanical three-axis gimbal ensures that all video remains absolutely rock solid and stills pin sharp no matter how jumpy the drone may look in flight, even when it’s battling against a stiff breeze. Speaking of which…
Dji Mavic Mini battery life:
One of the best features of the Mavic Mini is its estimated 30-minute battery life. That’s the same flight time as the Mavic 2 Pro, which costs more than twice as much, and 10 minutes longer than the Mavic Air. This was largely borne out in my testing, though if you’re flying in stronger winds, you’ll find that battery life drops as the drone works harder to stay in position. However, the DJI Mavic Air 2 has slightly longer endurance, at 34 minutes.
Mavic mini controller:
The remote itself is pretty basic. It has removable joysticks, which stow inside when not in use; the left stick controls altitude and rotation, while the right stick moves the drone forward, backward, left, and right.
source: pcmag.com
There’s a Record button on the left shoulder and a Photo button on the right. You also get a control wheel, on the left, to adjust camera pitch. There’s no dedicated dial to adjust the brightness of your scene via EV compensation. Instead, you’ll need to set that via the app’s touch interface. I would have preferred a remote with two wheels, one for camera control and another for EV, like you get with the higher-end Mavic models.
Dji Mavic mini price and availability
The Mavic Mini (from DJI or Amazon) comes in two different versions. The Standard version includes the DJI Mavic Mini, remote controller, one battery, extra propellers, and all necessary tools and wires for $399 USD. The Mavic Mini Fly More Combo includes all of the components from the standard version with the addition of the 360-degree Propeller Cage, Two-Way charging Hub, three batteries in total, three sets of extra propellers, and a carrying case for the price of $499 USD. You can add DJI Care Refresh for an additional $39 USD.
Mavic Mini Fly More Combo:
The DJI Mavic Mini Drone Fly More Combo includes the compact yet powerful DJI Mavic Mini Drone, extra batteries, a propeller guard, and other accessories to help you keep capturing as many moments as possible.
Verdict – It worth?
The DJI Mavic Mini is a masterful balance of portability, price, image quality, and convenience. Its featherweight, foldable design means you can fly it without needing to register it first, and despite its size it still manages to offer remarkably stable video. The Mavic Mini doesn’t have object tracking or object avoidance, and doesn’t capture 4K video, topping out at 2.7K at 30fps; but it weighs no more than five golf balls, lasts a solid 30 minutes in the air, and could fit in a large jacket pocket if needed – which means this mighty, mini drone’s pros soar way above its cons.
+ FOR
Low cost of entry.
Includes remote control.
Excellent battery life.
Crisp 2.7K video and 12MP photos.
Gimbal stabilization.
Automated cinematic camera movements.
Find My Drone feature.
Doesn’t require federal registration.
– Against
No 4K or 60fps 2.7K video
No object tracking
Micro USB charging, not USB-C

After visiting Sunset Arch, it was time to leave Hole-in-the-Rock Road and make my way toward Moab. A short ways up the road, as I crested a small hill, there was a SUV parked on the side and an older guy standing in the middle madly waving his arms. I had to either stop or run him over. After several seconds considering the latter, I decided to take the former. I really didn't want to dent the Jeep.
He informed me of the flash flood and that it was much too fast and deep to cross. I went to take a look. Those are my footprints. I told him I wasn't worried about it, and that I was going to cross. He panicked and urgently asked me to reconsider this foolishness. I assured him the Jeep would have no problem crossing and climbed back inside. Then he asked me to not leave him there. He didn't have 4 wheel drive and was afraid he'd either get stuck or be swept away in his attempt to cross. About now I was regretting taking the former of those two choices instead of the latter, and told him I'd wait a bit.
He talked my ear off for the next twenty minutes. His wife never got out of the SUV.
After the twenty minutes of one-sided conversation about the dangers of flash floods and how GPS systems worked (I can't remember how he segwayed to that), the flash flood had subsided to about 50% of it's former capacity, and so had my patience. I said my farewells, wished him the best of luck, and took off.
Next day I listened to the news for a report of a large SUV being swept away in a flash flood on Hole-in-the-Rock Road, but didn't hear anything. I guess he made it out alive.

Timur Mardeyev
AKA: Ratmir Maruna
Last Seen: November 29, 2011
Location last seen: Grove, Oklahoma
Age at time missing: 27 years old
Height: 6'0 - 6'1"
Weight: 180 pounds
Other: Strong Russian accent
Transportation: 2010 Navy Blue Hyundai Sante Fe (SUV) - Oklahoma license plate number 51312C
Vehicle was located as abandoned in Tulsa, OK with keys in ignition.
Circumstances: Timur Mardeyev was born and from the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan and was in the United States on a work visa in 2011. He was visiting, and working, with his sister and brother-in-law in Grove, Oklahoma and was in the process of house-hunting for a permanent home. He was to receive his paperwork which enables him to stay and work longer in the USA. Timur had a fiancé in Russia that he was going to fly back home to marry in February 2012. Nobody knows why, but on the day he went missing he seemed "snappy" and a bit withdrawn. When he, and his brother in law, got back to their worksite, an hour later than usual, Timur immediately got into his vehicle, and did not wait for it to warm up as he normally does, and drove off horridly and was never seen again.
His family filed a missing persons report. On December 9, 2011, his vehicle was located and towed from a convenience store parking lot where it had been abandoned in Tulsa, Oklahoma. According to the GPS in the SUV, it showed that his car was parked in front of the "Riverspirit Casino" for an hour that eve, then it left and was parked again at the "Batman Convenience Store" in the 1400 block of north Mingo Road where it was left abandoned with the keys in the ignition. His keys, expensive sunglasses and GPS system were inside the vehicle, along with an open bottle of whiskey and an unopened bottle of Coca Cola. (Timur drank beer.) A personally engraved Bible, "Daniel Christopher Brown", a gift, was also missing. His paperwork for his VISA application, father's death certificate and other important papers was also missing. Many strange circumstances regarding his SUV such as the seat was clear to the steering wheel when the family went to pick it up. There was gravel in the front and back seats (he kept a meticulously clean car) and the radio was tuned to a heavy rap music channel and he only listened to a Russian station, or his cds, and did not like rap music, at all. Additionally his money change compartment was wiped out with only a penny sitting sideways.
Because the casino has no surveillance tapes, authorities aren't sure whether he actually visited there on the day of his disappearance. According to the GPS, whoever was driving his SUV drove from Grove to Tulsa without stopping and didn't take Timur's usual route. He usually took the turnpike when traveling distances but on the day he disappeared his car turned around at the turnpike toll gates and took another, roundabout route to Tulsa through back streets and routes. His cellular phone was used to access the internet at 11:00 p.m. the night he disappeared, but has been turned off ever since. He was carrying his wallet and passport at the time he went missing and had about $3,000-$5,000 in cash with him.
While Timur was sad, as his mother passed away three years ago and his father only months prior to his missing, his family believes something else has happened to Timur and ask the public to please come forward with whatever information that they may have that can lead to Timur. He has missed the date to pick up his wedding rings and his flight to Russia to wed his fiancé. His sister is extremely worried about him. During his stay he rarely ventured off on his own and only did functions with his sister and her family. He had no friends in the USA and only a few days prior to his disappearance it was learned he had befriended a woman online by using an alias name of Ratmir Maruna,or Ратмир Маруна. (Perhaps so that his fiancé in Russia would not happen upon his page on Badoo.com) and was considering meeting this woman, albeit his family told him that was not good advice as he was to marry. The family believes he may have met this woman and that she has more answers that could help them than she has told. She told the family she only spoke with him once on the phone, however, phone records show they spoke more than once. There's no evidence that he left the country after he vanished. His passport has been flagged so if anyone tries to use it to travel, the authorities will be notified.

scanned some slides from my days as a Geophysics student at University.
This is a GPS base station, the unit is left here, in a fixed position over a known benchmark, to monitor the intentional drift built into the GPS system by the US military, while a field system is used for the survey in nearby areas.
Skelmorlie is a village in North Ayrshire in the southwest of Scotland. Although it is the northernmost settlement in the council area of North Ayrshire, it is contiguous with Wemyss Bay, which is in Inverclyde. The dividing line is the Kelly Burn, which flows into the Firth of Clyde just south of the Rothesay ferry terminal. Despite their proximity, the two villages have historically been divided, Skelmorlie in Ayrshire and Wemyss Bay in Renfrewshire.
Skelmorlie itself is divided into two sections, Lower and Upper Skelmorlie. There is one primary school in the village, with secondary age pupils going to Largs Academy in North Ayrshire. In common with this part of the Clyde foreshore, the rich red sandstone is a prominent feature of the landscape and housing in Skelmorlie.
Early Skelmorlie
The village is nestled on a plateau and is situated 30–60 m above sea level. It overlooks the four-mile-wide (six-kilometre) Firth of Clyde, with views across to the beginning of the Scottish Highlands. The outstanding panoramic view from the area stretches from Arran and the "sleeping warrior" in the south-west to the mountains either side of Loch Long to the North.
It is known that "a significant population" lived around the area behind the present-day Manor Park Hotel in the 9th to 11th century, and evidence supports the theory that an early Celtic church existed there before the arrival of the Cluniac Monks (who formed Paisley Abbey in 1163) and the foundation of the Roman Church.
The land on which the modern day village now stands was passed from King Malcolm III to the Cunninghames, and was subsequently acquired by Sir Alexander de Montgomerie of Ardrossan on 25 March 1453, when his sister Anne married Sir Robert Cunninghame of Kilmaurs.
The Montgomeries were Normans, descended from William the Conqueror's great grandmother. There were thirteen Montgomeries of Skelmorlie, the line being founded in 1461 by George Montgomerie, 2nd son of the first Lord Montgomerie.
The earliest known record of a "building" in the village is a building in the shape of a simple keep, which was built around 1502 on the site of what is now Skelmorlie Castle. This keep was in the corner of the castle nearest Stirrats Farm.
There were six baronets (a holder of a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown titled Sir, but never entitled to sit in the House of Lords), starting with Sir Robert Montgomerie in 1628 (knighted by King James VI and who attended his own funeral and wept with the mourners in 1651) and ending with Sir Hugh Montgomerie, who was very active in the political affairs of Glasgow, being both Provost and MP for Glasgow; he was also a commissioner of the Treaty of the Union.
Sir Hugh's nephew Robert had an elder daughter called Lilias, whose marriage united the estate to the senior branch of the Family of Eglinton. The Cunninghames held the northern part of Skelmorlie for a while before passing it to the Montgomeries, the split being the burn at the Meigle. The southern half was further split in two - nearest the south was Blackhouse (on or near to the site of the Manor Park Hotel) and nearest the north was Thirdpart, Barr, Moat and Auchengarth.
The area of Knock entered into the possession of John, 1st Montgomerie of Blackhouse, when his son Patrick married a Frazer of Knock. A feu charter in favour of "Patrick Montgomerie of Blackhous" can still be seen in the Manor Park Hotel.
Patrick was succeeded by Hugh Montgomerie and then by John Montgomerie. John was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Covenanters who was killed fighting Cromwell at Dunbar, his heir, also Patrick sold the estate to the Bannatynes of Kelly in 1633 and was the last of the Montgomeries of Blackhouse. The estate stayed part of the Kelly estate until the 1800s
When Kelly Castle was burnt in 1740, the Bannatynes moved into Blackhouse which they had owned for a century. They sold it in 1780 and bought it back in 1795 after Kelly was sold.
The 18th Century saw the end of feudal society (where peasants worked the land and contributed work to their land'lords') and the growth of industry. Communities were beginning to form at Finnock (Inverkip), Kellybridge and Skelmorlie (Meigle). Simultaneously, some of this population was moving and accumulating in Largs.
Most significantly, the 18th century saw the rise in the importance of the River Clyde and the increase in trade that it brought.
History
Skelmorlie's history is recorded as far back as the fifteenth century. Skelmorlie Castle, south of the village, is a tower house built on the site of an older structure in 1502. Much altered and added to since, it is an ancient seat of the Clan Montgomery (a notable burial tomb of the family can be seen at Skelmorlie Aisle in Largs). During the nineteenth century the village was once home to many Glasgow tea barons. On the cliff above the shore a large hydropathic institution once stood, with access from the main road via a lift whose shaft was hewn out of the rock face. The building later operated as a hotel, but was demolished in the 1990s.
To the south of Skelmorlie is the serpent mound, a prehistoric, perhaps druidic, site apparently carved either deliberately for religious uses or by nature then reused due to its natural shape.
On Saturday 18 April 1925, an embankment on the reservoir which belonged to the Eglinton Estate and provided the main water supply for the whole village gave way, releasing millions of gallons of water down through the village. After 10 minutes many homes, streets and gardens were shattered and five people, four of them children, lay dead.
The composer and arranger Brian Fahey and his wife Audrey lived in Skelmorlie from 1972 until her death in 2006. Nowadays Skelmorlie has a population of 1880 residents.
Skelmorlie Measured Mile
Before the introduction of GPS systems, measured nautical miles were used to measure the speed of new ships under sea trials before being handed over by the shipyard to the owner. In the early part of the 20th century, the Royal Navy used a measured nautical mile in the Firth of Clyde off Skelmorlie, known as the 'Skelmorlie Mile', as the range for speed trials of new warships. The mile was also used for merchant shipping trials well into the 1980s.
In simple terms, a nautical measured mile is a nautical mile which is marked by two pairs of posts on or near the shore. The ship, already at top speed and on the requisite bearing, sails from one pair of posts to the next. A stopwatch is started when the first two posts are aligned and then stopped when the next two posts are aligned. Each post has a 'V' or inverted V-shaped marker on it which forms an 'X' with its partner post when they are exactly aligned. To accurately measure performance, ships had to make several runs in both directions to compensate for variations in wind and tide.
The 'Skelmorlie Mile' is a Category B Listed Structure. It was established in 1866 by the Clyde shipbuilding firm of Robert Napier & Sons. It was surveyed by two different land surveyors, namely Kyle & Frew and Smith & Wharrie, and was checked by Admiralty staff.
It consists of two pairs of tall, white painted poles, each pair set 1 nautical mile (1,852 metres) from each other. The poles are set on concrete bases, with iron stays, and have sight markers at the upper level. The northern pair of posts can be found by the bus shelter at the foot of the Hydro Steps, near the turning point on Shore Road. One of these is on the shore and can be accessed by walking a couple of hundred metres south and entering the beach by the steps at the small pumping station. The other northern post is mounted halfway up a cliff behind the bus shelter and has fallen into severe disrepair, the top half having snapped and fallen to the side. The southern pair of posts are at the south end of Skelmorlie, immediately south of Skelmorlie Castle. One of these is on the rocky shore, near the A78 road, the other is in a field between the A78 and Meigle.
South Ayrshire is one of thirty-two council areas of Scotland, covering the southern part of Ayrshire. It borders onto Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire. South Ayrshire had an estimated population in 2021 of 112,450, making it the 19th–largest subdivision in Scotland by population. With an area of 472 sq mi, South Ayrshire ranks as the 15th largest subdivision in Scotland.
South Ayrshire's administrative centre is located in its largest town, Ayr. The headquarters for its associated political body, South Ayrshire Council, is housed at the towns County Buildings located in Wellington Square. Ayr is the former county town of the historic Ayrshire county, with the political activity of the Ayrshire County Council being based at County Buildings.
History
South Ayrshire was created in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, which replaced Scotland's previous local government structure of upper-tier regions and lower-tier districts with unitary council areas providing all local government services. South Ayrshire covered the same area as the abolished Kyle and Carrick district, and also took over the functions of the abolished Strathclyde Regional Council within the area. The area's name references its location within the historic county of Ayrshire, which had been abolished for local government purposes in 1975 when Kyle and Carrick district and Strathclyde region had been created.
In 2021, South Ayrshire submitted a bid for city status as part of the 2022 Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. The bid was based on the area's rich history and links to royalty, and received backing from organisations and businesses including Ayrshire College and Scottish Enterprise. The bid was ultimately unsuccessful, with eight other settlements across the UK, overseas territories and crown dependencies being awarded city status, including Scottish town Dunfermline.
Geographically, South Ayrshire is located on the western coast of Scotland, sharing borders with neighbouring local authorities East Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and North Ayrshire. The climate in South Ayrshire, typical of that in western Scotland, is milder than that of eastern Scotland due to the stronger maritime influence, as the prevailing winds blow from the sea into South Ayrshire, which is located primarily on the western coast of Scotland. The warm Gulf Stream also has a strong influence on western Scotland. With winds mainly blowing from the sea the annual mean temperatures are in the range 9.5 to 9.9 °C (49.1 to 49.8 °F) in coastal areas of South Ayrshire such as Ayr and Troon.
The sea reaches its lowest temperature in February or early March so that on average February is the coldest month in some coastal parts of South Ayrshire along with the Rhins of Galloway, Kintyre and the Hebrides. In February the mean daily minimum temperature varies from about 2 °C in most of the islands, 1 to 2 °C along most of the Solway Firth and lowland inland areas, but less than −1 °C in parts of the Southern Uplands and central Highlands. Inland, where the influence of the sea is less, January is the coldest month with mean daily minimum temperatures generally between −3 and 0 °C.
The number of hours of natural sunshine in South Ayrshire is controlled by the length of day and by cloudiness. In general, December is the dullest month and May or June the sunniest. Sunshine duration decreases with increasing altitude, increasing latitude and distance from the coast. Local topography also exerts a strong influence and in the winter deep glens and north-facing slopes can be in shade for long periods. Industrial pollution and smoke haze can also reduce sunshine amounts, but the decline in heavy industry in the Ayrshire area, primarily in Ayr in South Ayrshire along with Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, has resulted in an increase in sunshine duration particularly in the winter months.
Average annual rainfall totals range from less than 1,000 mm (39 in) in the upper Clyde valley and along the coasts of Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway to on average over 3,500 mm (140 in) over the higher parts of the west Highlands, approaching the maximum values found in the UK (over 4,000 millimetres or 160 inches further north).
South Ayrshire's population is mostly concentrated around the adjoining coastal towns of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon located to the north-west of the council, which represents 68% of the council's total population according to data derived from the 2011 census, with a combined population of 76,846. Other areas of significance include the towns of Maybole and Girvan which are located to the south of the council area in the district of Carrick.
The economy of South Ayrshire, like many other areas, was badly affected during the worldwide financial crisis from 2009–2012. Despite this, total Gross Value Added for South Ayrshire has seen a steady increase over the last 20 years, reaching a peak in 2015 of £2.4 billion. South Ayrshire's GVA represents 1.9% of the total Scottish Gross Value Added income which is consistent with the previous 20 years. The largest employment industry in South Ayrshire and Scotland is the public administration, education and health sector. Compared with Scotland, proportionally there are more South Ayrshire residents employed in this sector than Scotland, while there are proportionally fewer employed in banking, finance and insurance sector than Scotland. Despite being a costal area, the smallest employment in South Ayrshire is in the agriculture and fishing sector.
The council and its neighbours of East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire work together on economic growth as the Ayrshire Regional Economic Partnership, with support from the Scottish and UK governments and other private and public sector organisations.
Educational provision in South Ayrshire is offered via eight secondary schools, forty-one primary schools, two special needs schools and five stand-alone Early Years Centres (although some primary schools have Early Years Centres attached). In terms of early years provision, there are also a number of private establishments which are operated in conjunction with South Ayrshire Council, rather than managed and operated entirely by the council.
Based on figures from the 2016-2017 academic year, within South Ayrshire, there were 6,091 secondary school aged pupils, 7,855 primary school aged pupils and 251 pupils attending special educational needs provision establishments.
South Ayrshire Council
South Ayrshire is governed by South Ayrshire Council which has been under no overall control since 2003, in which time various coalitions and minority administrations have operated. Since the last election in 2022, the council has been led by a Conservative minority administration which took office with support from two independent councillors and abstentions from Labour. The next election is due in 2027.
The council's civic head takes the title of provost. This is a largely ceremonial role, chairing council meetings and acting as the area's first citizen. Although an elected councillor, the provost is expected to be politically impartial. Political leadership is provided by the leader of the council.
Wider politics
At the 2014 Scottish independence referendum South Ayrshire rejected independence by an above-average margin of 57.9% "No" to 42.1% "Yes". With a turnout of 86.1%, there were 34,402 "Yes" votes and 47,247 "No" votes. Nationally 55.3% of voters voted "No" in the referendum compared to 44.7%, who voted "Yes" – resulting in Scotland remaining a devolved part of the United Kingdom.
At the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum a majority of voters in South Ayrshire voted for the United Kingdom to remain a member of the European Union (EU), with 59% of voters in South Ayrshire voting for the United Kingdom to remain a member of the EU and 41% voting for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. With a turnout of 69.8%, 36,265 votes were cast for remain and 25,241 were cast for leave. 62% of Scottish voters voted remain whilst 38% voted leave, whilst nationally 51.8% of voters in the United Kingdom as a whole voting to leave and 48.2% voting to remain

So I'm putzing around online, waiting for a game on Facebook to reset for me, debating bed when I read an article about how recent solar activity could screw up GPS systems in the short term.
"Recent solar activity" means a chance for aurora, but the past few times this has happened its always been a huge dud.
So that said, I poke my head outside and all I seem to see is a low hazy cloud over the northern horizon. Disappointed, I take a quick shot just in case and BAM. Hazy blue cloud shows up a telltale green on the K-x's LCD.
I can safely check off one more item from my photography bucket list after tonight. Best yet, it happened in August rather than February so no freezing my tail off!

"We started to move in towards the city, but there was so many alleys, and they all were dead ends. Other missions were apparently more 'crucial' than ours, even though this is the planet that most of the seperatist leaders come from, so we never got our GPS system. I've known from earlier experiences in other squads that city streets are labyrinths, and I assumed today would be no exception and we'd get lost. And we did. so we had make a dangerous move and split up. In a city. Filled with droids. Smart. So I walk alone in an alley. as the sky rains lasers and metal above me. I just hope we don't lose what we got left; because then. Well, I just can't think about it."

GoCar is a two-seater, 3 wheeled vehicle that runs with a 49cc size scooter engine. It is legally classed as a scooter to drive on the roads. The GoCars were created with the purpose of being rented to tourists as a different way to see a city
GoCars run with a 49cc Scooter engine, made by Trigger Technics BV of Leiden, in the Netherlands.
GoCars have an integrated audio GPS system which runs through the patented navigation software "FoundAround". This allows the cars to give driving instructions to passengers around specific routes, at the same time as providing a tour guide-style commentary around a city. The tour is played to the passengers through two 4-inch speakers inside the Gocar. The software is custom designed for GPS Tour creation and uses a "Tour Logic" to render to the user pertinent, contextual information.
The fiberglass-bodied cars are 92 inches long and weigh 380 pounds. For registration purposes, the vehicle is considered a motorcycle, but because it has three wheels, it can be driven by anyone with a regular Class C driver's license.
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, they are approved for use on surface streets, but can't be driven on freeways or roads where the top speed is 45 mph
GoCar has since expanded into Europe, launching in 2008 in Barcelona and Lisbon, followed by Valencia in 2009 and Madrid in 2010
Headed for Toulouse, France, in general, with a short list of places to consider stopping on the way. We had no books or WiFi, so we tried winging it.... Though weren't excited by our visit to Orthez, we decided to give Pau a chance. Failure. Construction everywhere made GPS system almost useless. Traffic was jammed. We wandered downtown and decided to cut our loses.

Space Shuttle in flight testing the cargo bay doors. Amazing!!! Those who feel NASA is a waste of time and money, please throw away your cell phones, your laptops, your satellite TV, of course your Garman or whatever GPS system device you use, this means you will have to log off the internet too or any device except the home phone that is plugged into the wall, of course if it uses a coax cable you might have to give that up too and probably includes fiber optics.
Here you can see SDO in operation.
This train is formed of 10 coaches but the platform is only able to take 8 coach trains. SDO is programmed to allow the driver to release the correct number of doors that are actually on the station platform. The system works with the on-train’s GPS system and triggers the appropriate on board announcement to warn passengers they must be in coaches 1 to 8 to alight from the train. Station lengths vary across the network so a number of varied announcements can be heard whilst onboard.
Current Location, Heading and Speed
The heading can be shown either as cardinal directions or in degrees.

It’s hard to lose a rocket when there is nothing, not even a rock, for miles. (At home, many rockets end up in trees or drift randomly across the neighborhood.)
When the winds pick up, the parachutes can drag the rockets, and you hope that you can run faster… My Mirage got a “playa rash” from the drag.
A flickr question from Rocketeer prompted me to try a portable GPS system in the payload of one of my wider rockets (on the right), and it worked like a charm. (If my speed got too high, I would have problems with a stock consumer model, per an earlier discussion).
Massive Ordnance Air Blast
The GBU-43/B MOAB (Massive Ordnance Air Blast) bomb, nicknamed “Mother Of All Bombs" is a large, powerful and accurately delivered high explosive weapon. The MOAB is the largest-ever satellite-guided, air-delivered weapon in history. The 21,600 lb MOAB is an improved replacement for the unguided 15,000 lb BLU-82 Daisy Cutter used in Vietnam and Afghanistan. MOAB is a guided bomb which delivers 18,700 lb of H6 explosive using a BLU-120/B warhead. It uses the KMU-593/B GPS/INS guidance system and is stabilized by series of fixed wings and grid (lattice) fins. The unique lattice fins offer excellent aerodynamic properties. It is designed to be launched from a C-130 aircraft, the MOAB is strapped to a specially designed cradle. Upon extraction from the aircraft the cradle is separated from the MOAB. The MOAB then proceeds to the target. The MOAB was developed, tested, and fielded by the Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate, Air Armament Center, the 46th Operations Group, Detachment 1 at Eglin AFB, FL in concert with other agencies and contractors. Within in ten months, the MOAB program went from development contract award to delivery into the Operational Theater. 26 February 2003 – First flight of inert weapon 07 March 2003 – Guided flight test of inert weapon displays capability of the massive “smart” bomb 11 March 2003 – Live flight test of the MOAB 11 April 2003 – Delivery of first MOAB into Operational Theater 13 April 2017 – First operational use of the MOAB in Afghanistan

Here I am on a mini road trip with my new truck! I was all set on getting a Mustang, but decided to postpone that purchase a bit. This truck was needed more than the Mustang, and really- it has everything Nissan can possible put on a vehicle except for rear seat DVD consoles (totally not needed), and the navigation GPS system (cheaper to buy on your own… and better that way too!).
This Frontier will last me many, many years. My last one had over 300,000 miles on it before it was wrecked; in my old business we had many with 600 and 700 thousand miles on them!
P.S. Yes that is a Starbucks sign behind me- I of course HAD to stop in for a Pumpkin Spice Latte!!
Drone Deploy - the de facto standard for ground control/base stations. Unfortunately not open source but affordable if flying just one bird.
This image is NOT from one of my birds. This is just the demo drone data. Free in the App Store.
For open source (I’m the founder of tendenci - open source on GitHub and kinda unrelated but still awesome).. anyhoo.... I still view paparazziUAV as the gold standard for open source drones, control and base stations. Yes it’s got too many languages (programming languages I mean) mixed in there, but it’s a complete solution. Supports Galileo (Europe’s satellite network like our unencrypted GPS system.

After that you’ve got ardupilot. Late to the game but tremendous support!
Funny side note. I’ve only seen live AV cutoff on a speaker one (1) time at DEFCON. It was a young man demonstrating how to use software enhanced radios to override the no-fly-zones implemented in the ASIC chips DJI and other manufacturers are (now) required by law to install in their navigation systems.
Inertial systems on older birds didn’t do gps locks and being line of site it, in hindsight, could have been a bad thing. The solution of course is to not be an idiot and stay away from sensitive areas.

yes, i broke down an bought an iPhone (i need a GSM phone for Amsterdam! I'm going to give it a week abroad to see if I'll keep it for NYC use or not)
anyway, downloaded the Navizon location-aware app and hoo-doggy, it's right on (using wi-fi triangulation... haven't tried Cell ID triangulation 'cause I aint got no SIM card yet!)
someone asked me like a week ago when the iPhone would be location-aware and my guess was end of the year... I guess I called that one wrong - ha! (anyone know if you can pull the data into other apps yet? right now all it does it show your position on a Google Map)
Flying high in the skies is America's favorite Avenger, Agent Phil Coulson, in his beloved Lola. She looks like an average candy apple red 1962 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, but thanks to Stark Industries, she's got a few tricks up her sleeve like flamethrowers and the world's first GPS system (And he gave it a girl's name).
Here's to another season this coming fall of Lola, Coulson and the gang. #CoulsonLives
----
Lola uses the chassis of Nick Fury's hovercar from 76004 Spider-Cycle Chase, with some slight tweaks and modifications. Coulson would look better with some of the minifig elements from the forthcoming Ultra Agents series, particularly Agent Max Burns' torso.

Maps had to be made and all roads marked for a more reliable system for ambulance drivers. In past years, people from the area relied on landmarks and older buildings for directions. In regard to ever expanding 911 services and fire stations, directions and map books paved the way for quicker response times. There were no regulations on how long it took an ambulance to respond to a call. With advancements in medical research, it has become very import to get to patients with significant cardiac events, stokes, and trauma in record time. Only taking approx 4 to 6 min for the brain to become damaged by lack of oxygen, you can see my point. The state of Georgia implemented a response time of 10 min to an emergency call. For ages 1-35, Trauma is the leading cause of death. The service I work for has a contract with the county to retain certain criteria for response times. Our service has also built outer lying sub stations in order to decrease our response times for the county. Global tracking System is an enhanced systems that tracks all the ambulances and their routes. Our dispatcher monitors the GPS and that allows the dispatcher to pick the closest appropriate unit when emergency calls come in. This has been instrumental in lowering our response times and increasing the survivability of our patients. Our service produces response time reports over a monthly basis. After the implementation of the gps system and computer aided drafting dispatch systems we have shown a slight decrease in responding time. Our time has cut down by 1-2 minutes. A study was done is Mississippi in 1994. Paramedics would carry a back pack that contained a satellite transceiver and a large folding antenna. They would be able communicate with the hospitals via a advanced communications satellite (ACTS) that NASA has put in place in the early 60’s to 70’s. The outcome was grim. The lengthy time and bulk deemed it inappropriate for EMS use. Our service is fixing to change GPS systems. Verizon wireless has offered our service a plan in which cell phones will relay location information to a computer in dispatch and update the ambulance location every thirty seconds. The cell phones will also give all ambulances step by step directions via handheld navigation. With the ever increasing satellites and new technology out, modern emergency services will continue to see improvement

Edited NICER image of x-rays seen by the instrument on the International Space Station. Inverted grayscale variant.
Original caption: In this image, numerous sweeping arcs seem to congregate at various bright regions. You may wonder: What is being shown? Air traffic routes? Information moving around the global internet? Magnetic fields looping across active areas on the Sun?
In fact, this is a map of the entire sky in X-rays recorded by NASA’s Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), a payload on the International Space Station. NICER’s primary science goals require that it target and track cosmic sources as the station orbits Earth every 93 minutes. But when the Sun sets and night falls on the orbital outpost, the NICER team keeps its detectors active while the payload slews from one target to another, which can occur up to eight times each orbit.
The map includes data from the first 22 months of NICER’s science operations. Each arc traces X-rays, as well as occasional strikes from energetic particles, captured during NICER’s night moves. The brightness of each point in the image is a result of these contributions as well as the time NICER has spent looking in that direction. A diffuse glow permeates the X-ray sky even far from bright sources.
The prominent arcs form because NICER often follows the same paths between targets. The arcs converge on bright spots representing NICER’s most popular destinations — the locations of important X-ray sources the mission regularly monitors.
“Even with minimal processing, this image reveals the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant about 90 light-years across and thought to be 5,000 to 8,000 years old,” said Keith Gendreau, the mission’s principal investigator at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We’re gradually building up a new X-ray image of the whole sky, and it’s possible NICER’s nighttime sweeps will uncover previously unknown sources.”
NICER’s primary mission is to determine the size of dense remains of dead stars called neutron stars — some of which we see as pulsars — to a precision of 5%. These measurements will finally allow physicists to solve the mystery of what form of matter exists in their incredibly compressed cores. Pulsars, rapidly spinning neutron stars that appear to “pulse” bright light, are ideally suited to this “mass-radius” research and are some of NICER’s regular targets.
Other frequently visited pulsars are studied as part of NICER's Station Explorer for X-ray Timing and Navigation Technology (SEXTANT) experiment, which uses the precise timing of pulsar X-ray pulses to autonomously determine NICER’s position and speed in space. It’s essentially a galactic GPS system. When mature, this technology will enable spacecraft to navigate themselves throughout the solar system — and beyond.

Rue de la Ligne | Pont d'Avignon 06/07/2014 16h10
Following our GPS system from Carpentras to Remoulins we came along the center of Avignon and had to pass under the famous Pont d'Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet) which we have visited extensively last year (2013).
Photo taken through the window pane of the car in motion.
Pont Saint-Bénezet
The Pont Saint-Bénezet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon, is a famous medieval bridge in the town of Avignon, in southern France.
The bridge spanned the Rhône River between Avignon and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. It was built between 1177 and 1185, with an original length of some 900 m. The bridge was damaged during the siege of Avignon by Louis VIII of France in 1226 but beginning in 1234 it was rebuilt.
Historians have suggested that the earlier bridge may have consisted of a wooden superstructure supported on stone piers and that only when rebuilt was the bridge constructed entirely in stone. The bridge was only 4.9 m in width, including the parapets at the sides. The arches often collapsed when the river flooded and had to be rebuilt.
The bridge fell into a state of disrepair during the 17th century. By 1644 it was missing 4 arches and finally a catastrophic flood in 1669 swept away much of the structure. Since then, its surviving arches have successively collapsed or been demolished, and only four of the initial 22 arches remain.
The arches are elliptical, with the long axis vertical. This innovation in bridge building allowed spans of up to 35 meters, longer than any Roman arch spans. This, along with the novel use of cutwaters that are pointed in both the upstream and the downstream direction, reduced scour around the pilings, one of the main threats to the stability of stone bridges.
The bridge's construction was inspired by Saint Bénézet, a local shepherd boy who (according to tradition) was commanded by angels to build a bridge across the river. Although he was ridiculed at first, he dramatically "proved" his divine inspiration by miraculously lifting a huge block of stone. He won support for his project from wealthy sponsors who formed themselves into a Bridge Brotherhood to fund its construction. After his death, he was interred on the bridge itself, in a small chapel standing on one of the bridge's surviving piers on the Avignon side.
The bridge was also the site of devotion by the Rhône boatmen, whose patron saint was Saint Nicholas. They initially worshipped in the Chapel of Saint Nicholas on the bridge itself (where Saint Bénézet's body was also interred) but the increasing dilapidation of the bridge led to the clergy refusing to preside over services for fear of a total collapse. A new chapel was erected on dry land in the 18th century at the foot of the bridge, on the Avignon side.

“boys love their toys”
For a device that connects to satellites 1000 km into the ionosphere just to tell you how fast you are moving, it’s simply amazing. GPS is an excellent technology, but at the core of it lies the most simplest mathematical concept. The device gathers low-power high frequency electromagnetic waves and calculates the time taken for the wave to travel through the atmosphere, thus giving an idea of the distance of the satellite by applying the speed of the wave to be equal to light waves. With three such satellites, the device visualizes three circles with their radii being the distance of each from the device. The single point of intersection of the three circles together with a fourth, the earth being a sphere itself, determines the exact position of the device. With all necessary latitude, longitude, altitude information at every instant time, the device can now calculate the exact displacement of the object in a certain time, giving you the value of your speed.*
This is absolutely amazing. Making big satellites and atomic clocks work, just even if for fun for all free! The best part of it with 24 (27, 3 in case of failure) satellites hovering in space 24/7, you get to have at least 3 satellites over any place on the earth. That makes terrific combination. The technology was in fact developed by the U.S. Army at first, but later made public. Now U.K. are planning to get their own GPS systems.
*The technology at its development involves a lot of other concerns, as waves often bounce off tall buildings, the speed of waves often decrease, or the time of the device and the satellite mismatch, all culminating in errors. In the subsequent years, many developments have solved most of the problems, but still it is strongly advisable not to solely trust of Digital cartography in case of emergency or while driving a car. GPS units installed in cars have other reliable sources such as perfectly grafted maps to help them correct errors they may face.
