You are 45 today yet you don't look like it. What can I say, you are the epitome of everything a man should be, and even though you sometimes are not the easiest person to live with - in all the bad and good logic always defeats emotion in all situations at most. Hands down you are the most genius and intellectually fascinating person I know. You can kick the ass of any Ivy-League top grad out there whether its in physics, mathematics or computer science - which amazes me to no end. The way your ego sometimes flares up when my arguments might just be a bit more to the point then yours amuses me, but then again I got the genes from you. The fact that my bone structure is completely identical to yours, the way I speak, my interests in history, photography, intellectual challenges, my love for work, music and finding happiness in the simplest things is all from you. It's kinda of interesting how from you and mom I get as much of a male streak in my temper, attitude and personality as that of a female. And last but not least I thank you dad for always being a hard-ass on me ranging from sticking yucky things in my mouth when I was a baby to see my reaction, to all the times my lil ass met your leather belt when I was young to the current times when you literally are never afraid to be honest with me and tell me how it is. You are both my father, my friend and my role model. Because everything that I am - I am from watching how you and mom deal with life! And yes I will buy you that house and the GPS system and anything else you want even if it means I have to live on apples and cereal for a while! Or as Lenin once said - Peace, Bread and Land!

Trick is, you got to know how to download this information. And that's where I scratched my head...
Om Malik kicked off the latest of his internet sites last night at MR, a new San Francisco salon (yes, salon as in you get haircuts, manicures and arm massages there). Om's new site is called FoundRead and will be a community oriented site focusing on new businesses and entrepreneurial advice.
From Om: "FoundRead is a shared resource, where anyone can contribute, either through their posts, or experiences or comments. You can choose to contribute freely or anonymously. Just like a GPS system helps us drive through a maze of freeways, the founders and entrepreneurs help their peers navigate the twisted, confusing roads of company building."
I took some pictures of the evening as always of course. If you want to check out some of the folks who were there (or if you always just wondered what Bram Cohen of BitTorrent fame looks like getting a shave) you can check them out here.

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park, south-east London.
The observatory is situated at the top of a hill which overlooks Greenwich village, the Isle of Dogs and the City of London.
It's also where the Greenwich meridian runs, defining GMT-0, over which you can stand with one foot in the east and the other in the west!
Well... unless you want to go by the GPS system which managed to miss the zero line by about 140m. Mind you, this is also the system that was designed to have an 'off switch' for Einstein's laws of physics because the generals in charge of it refused to believe that time runs at different speeds up in the GPS satellites which revolve with the Earth at a much greater speed than the surface of the Earth itself. So... GMT's still king, innit :-)

Pilot's GPS system - running Memory Map, and all the red lines are a small selection of flights they've had previously from the lake.
I went to this corner hoping the arrangement of street signs would allow something they didn't, but here's the picture anyway.
There was recently a small-scale hullabaloo in Chicago over the name of Balbo Street, a minor street two blocks south and several blocks east of where I took this picture. Balbo is short, connecting one side of Grant Park with the other and then going no place else. It was named in honor of Italo Balbo, a leader of the paramilitary wing of Italy's National Fascist Party leading up to World War II who went on to command Mussolini's air force. Last year, some batch of alderman tripped over a history book and decided we needed to rename the street, and there was a lot of talk about replacing Balbo's name with that of Ida B. Wells, a Chicago-based African-American jounalist and educator of the early 20th century. This got Ida B. Wells fans excited, because she was probably a better person to name things after than a fascist.
But then there was a backlash, because despite King Richard I's attempt to use the construction of a college campus to erase Chicago's Italian neighborhood in the 1960s, there are still a lot of Italians in Chicago, and they still like having streets named after Italians, even if the particular Italian in question was a horribly racist fascist. The Italians threw a fit, and the city council decided not to rename Balbo. But they'd already gotten the African-American community all excited about Ida B. Wells. So, in their infinite wisdom, the city council decided instead to rename the street running right to left in this picture. This is the former Congress Parkway, a remnant of a street that once ran all the way across town but now runs from the south side of the Loop to the start of the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290), immediately to my left. This is now Ida B. Wells Drive.
Which, you know, is just fine, because Ida B. Wells is a worthy person to honor with a street, except for what happens at this intersection. The one-way street coming straight at me from the north in this picture is named for a U.S. Army captain who died in 1812 at the Battle of Fort Dearborn. That captain's name was William Wells. So now, I'm standing at the corner of Wells and Wells, and that's a lot of Wells. Balbo doesn't intersect Wells, so you wouldn't have had that problem if you'd just renamed Balbo. But now all the GPS systems are going to get confused, and you're going to wind up with a bunch of lost tourists.

I took my Amateur Radio Operator test this morning and I passed! I still can't believe it. I only studied for about a week. I needed a license to use the new GPS system for our next balloon launch. I'll get my license and call sign sometime in the next few weeks.
Success!

Had three hours of sleep since the big night last night. I woke up from my phone ringing... Leslie calling and saying that they were on the way to pick me up after picking up Navjit. I got ready and headed out when they got to my house. It was then I heard that Leslie set off the alarm at Navjit's house. funnnny. Ok, so Navjit brought along a disfunctional GPS system. Just incase Jacobe needed help with directions to Qwest field... which he did not.
We got to Qwest Field and met up with Hasstedt and Carl's group. We set-up our HQ for selling programs, shirts, sweaters and hats. Such a long morning of trying to sell programs.
Navjit and I signed up to sell stuff for the whole day so we got a lunch break earlier than the others who will leave after their shift ends. during our little lunch break I almost fell off a high ledge and then we got lost in downtown and in China town. While we re still we somehow stumbled our way into pike place and walked by this homeless man that scared us by saying "man fuck you!" We hesistated and then we booked it back to Qwest Field while picking up some food. By then the 2nd shift had already started.
The 2nd shift was a little bit more interesting at most. I sold more programs but got into more trouble. while selling programs i made my way into watching two football games. Near the end i found that i was in trouble. I checked in the cash from the programs sold and i was short $39. But as others checked in they were over $20. Which kind of made up for my loss. As the rest of the people left Brayde, Navjit and I watched the last game. Punahou vs Kitsap. The Punahou Buff and blue dominated, but the cheerleaders fancied my eyes.
As we left we pumped up some music along the way to Brayden's car. We had another crazy trip home. Dude... CRAZY! Got home exhausted and knocked out on the couch. Btw i have most of this day recorded.

MS FRAM is well equipped with two independent GPS systems, that work "hand in hand" (byte in byte?) with the electronic sea chart. That results in the ship's position always displayed as the center of a circle with precise current position. The navigation officer enters the projected itinerary into the main Nav computer, that means all the waypoints.
Waypoints are the dots you have to connect to see the ship's future course as a line on the map. If you do well, this line will not cross reefs, shallow waters, will not take "shortcuts" across land or other obstacles. So, these dots are important, mind. In our modern days, the ships computer is also connected to the steering computer which changes the course automatically. All the information needed is displayed on the central screen: Speed, course over ground, wind speed and - direction, Time To Go, Estimated Time of Arrival, to the next waypoint and to our final destination. And much, much more...Well, great, we can all go and have a coffee, then!
Far from it.
Our ship is traveling in tricky waters, almost all the time. And even if we have all the waypoints right there can be moving objects, like other vessels or, especially for us, ice. That means we need another instrument The bridge has to be manned 24/7, with at least two people at any time. Comes to bad visibility there are seaman in addition to that in order to look out. As the Captain puts it: The two most important instruments for navigation are the eyes of the navigator. Still. All these gadgets are support, improvement - not replacement. As well as the electronic chart is not forcing the good ol' admirality chart into retirement. Every navigator is able to use map, ruler and compasses. Like in old times.

Having decided to return the complement of the Danish visit to Suffolk, England in 869, but without killing the local King this time, and despite a 2 hour detour because of the indisposed ferry, the bikes finally reach a hotel close to Copenhagen. The GPS system having caused a 15 mile detour round the Danish countryside searching for Hotels, one of which apparently no longer exists, the others being surprisingly unsuitable for a venerable bike and two tired riders and oddly reminiscent of Middlesborough on a bad day. Fortunately this hotel has internet access, though no food apparently. The hotel staff kindly make up two sandwiches and keep the bikes in vew of reception overnight.

Stefan - during his very last day of Siwss military service.
We (family) met him on the ruine called Guarda Val above Madulain. He is suposed to help to cook for the 160+/- other soldiers arriving tonight. It is a special group called "train" soldiers, who still move around with working horses. I think this is a nostaligic left over of former days.
In normal life (we have a militia system) he plans for diggers with a GPS System, which gives the driver a full 3D picture of the whole he has to dig on a monitor.
Thank you for modelling.

Advances in exploration and production have helped to locate and recover a supply of oil and natural gas from major reserves across the globe. At the same time, demand for petroleum-based products has grown in every corner of the world. But supply and demand are rarely concentrated in the same place. Transportation therefore is vital to ensuring the reliable and affordable flow of petroleum we all count on to fuel our cars, heat our homes and improve the quality of our lives.
Tankers and pipelines are proven, efficient and economical means of connecting petroleum supply and demand. Supply-end pipelines carry crude oil from well to a loading terminal at a port. Tankers then carry the crude oil directly to demand-side pipelines that connect to the refineries that convert the raw material into useful products. Select the dates at left to see how the shipping of crude oil has evolved over time into the high-tech, reliable and environmentally sound system we enjoy today.
1885 - The United States and Russia were the major producers of crude oil, most of which was refined into kerosene. Invented in 1854, kerosene was in demand because it burned cleaner and brighter than other lamp fuels, such as whale oil. Kerosene from American refineries was soon crossing the Atlantic to meet growing demand in Europe.
The first oil exports crossed the ocean aboard all-purpose sailing ships, stored in the same wooden barrels usually used for wine.
Some of these ships were later outfitted with large-volume tanks to increase their carrying capacity.
Eventually, ships were built specifically to carry oil and petroleum products. The Glückauf, launched in 1886 and featuring an extra-strong hull, reinforced construction and specialized oil-handling systems, is considered the forerunner of modern oil tankers.
1955 - The automobile revolutionized American life in the first half of the 20th Century and created increased demand for gasoline. Oil also helped power rebuilding efforts after two destructive world wars. To ensure adequate supply to meet the growing demand, exploration and recovery efforts focused on new sources in the Middle East and Canada.
The need to deliver more oil called for larger tankers. Early iron and steel vessels were built using the same principles as wooden sailing ships -- lateral framing pieces attached to a single keel -- but problems with weight distribution and structural rigidity limited tankers to 82,000-barrel capacity. In 1908, Sir Joseph Isherwood patented a new shipbuilding technique that included frames and bulkheads running front-to-back and used the ship's floors to increase rigidity. By the early 1950's, "supertankers" built using a modified version of Isherwood's system had capacities of more than 280,000 barrels.
2002 - In the latter half of the 20th Century, advances in exploration and recovery technology opened up new supplies of oil and natural gas all around the world. To make long-distance transportation more cost-effective, tanker manufacturers developed "very large capacity carriers," or VLCCs, that can carry more than 1,400,000 barrels of crude oil.
Larger tankers conserve energy and reduce transportation costs. That's because although it requires more energy to power a larger ship, the rate of increase is less than the rate of increase in carrying capacity. For example, 16,000 horsepower are needed to drive a 420,000-barrel tanker, while 42,500 horsepower can propel a 1,820,000-barrel ship at the same speed. That means it takes less than three times the power to deliver more than four times the oil, reducing total energy consumption and saving fuel.
Today's cutting-edge tankers are the product of a commitment to safety combined with the power of computer-assisted design. As a result, the new ships traveling the seas are stronger, more maneuverable, and more durable than their predecessors.
Double Hulls - By 2015, all tankers operating in U.S. waters will be double-hulled vessels. This hull-within-a-hull configuration provides an extra measure of security: In the unlikely event of a collision or grounding, the outer hull will bear the brunt of the impact while the interior hull keeps the cargo secure and prevents oil from entering the marine environment.
Redundant Systems - In an effort to build ships capable of withstanding even the most extreme circumstances, many tankers are now equipped with redundant, or duplicate, systems. If the original system is compromised for whatever reason, a second, fully functional backup is on hand. This concept is put to use in navigation -- with back-up GPS systems, for example -- and down below in redundant engine rooms. Duplicate rudders and propellers have the added benefit of improved maneuverability, enabling the ship to rotate 360° in a fixed position.
Single-Operator Capability - A highly trained bridge crew is the key to effective decision-making on the seas. Once a decision is made, however, modern tankers allow a single deck officer to make all the appropriate adjustments to the ship's speed and heading from a central command station. This allows for faster response in critical situations.

Hops: You are mean.

The AK cars are equipped with a GPS commentary system, that at particular points on the journey will provide audio through the provided headphones. Prior to coming up to the point where the audio starts playing, a ding is heard and a yellow message comes up at the top of the screen saying "An Audio commentary will be available shortly" or words to that effect. Shortly after a ding is heard again and the screen comes up with a green message as seen above while the commentary plays. The ding is that horrible Windows 3.1 and Windows 95-era "Ding" that played everytime there was an error, and the one that Microsoft had to change because it was found it increased the likelihood of computer rage 3-fold over any other sound and was a high contributor to office worker stress levels. I wish they're replace the ding with something else, though its probably a non-selectable option from whomever they've purchased the GPS system from. Coastal Pacific with AK Cars, 14th September 2012

The Tennessee State Police officer looked at me with a very strange stare as I explained why my semi truck lay down at the bottom of the cliff, and why I was in hand cuffs. "I was coming down the steep grade when my air brakes failed. The rig was hitting 129 mph when I saw the runaway truck ramp, I moved over to the right lane and prepared myself for the sudden stop that would save my life and my truck. Then I saw it, "Authorized vehicles only"! I hit my speed dial for the DOT. Through that small speaker I heard, "This is the DOT emergency line, due to a high volume of calls there will be a ten minute wait before we can have a representative available. Your call may be recorded for quality and training purposes. Do you know that many of your questions can be answered on line at www.scared to death.dot.com? Your call is important to us, stay on the line and it will be answered in the order it was received.” Then the hold music came on. It was “Closer my God to thee”. About that time the ramp went by me at 235 mph. It was a long ride down the side of the cliff. My rig rolled over so many times I lost count. It rained frozen peas for five minutes. As I crawled out my window, and looked up at the hill I had to climb to get back up here I heard on the phone still in my hand, “This is a recording. Our GPS system shows that you are near the runaway truck ram on I-26 north of Asheville, NC. If you are calling for authorization to use the ramp please write down this number, 1224576. If questioned, you will need this number to release yourself from prosecution. We are asking all callers to rate our service by participating in a survey of just a few questions. If you wish to participate please push 1 now”. I did. Then the recording said, “Due to the mandated budget cuts we have reduced our number of employees who can answer the telephone. Please tell us after the tone what you think of that” beep……
That is when I made what you are calling terroristic threats, and that is why you have hand cuffed me.

Now unused atomic clocks which used to power the GPS system--USNO hosts the Master Clock behind GPS.
By the way, it seems that the new "European GPS" (Galileo) isn't very well seen at this side of the ocean --according to Wikipedia--: "Some US officials have threatened to potentially shoot down Galileo satellites in the event of a major conflict. The EU's stance is that Galileo is a neutral technology, available to all countries and everyone. Originally, EU officials did not want to change their original plans for Galileo, but have since reached a compromise, that Galileo was to use a different frequency. This allowed the blocking/jamming of one GNSS system without affecting the other, giving the US a greater advantage in conflicts in which it has the electronic warfare upper hand."

It's puzzling with our GPS systems. When we finish a hike we photograph the Garmin GPS machine as a "Just the facts" image. But then we started noticing that the distance at that point on the machine is different from the distance that displays on the hike profile when we download that data onto our computer. "Just the facts" shows 21 km's of distance, but the profile only 19.26. How come? We discovered Alltrails.com in doing research for hikes and now contribute to it. Their track of our hike suggest only 18.95 km's distance, which is odd, as Larry was carrying this machine when he did his solo conquest of the Bogart Tower, which would have made his actual distance longer than mine, as I carried the Garmin... Frustrating.
Although the forecast was for a warm day, the wind gusts in the region were predicted to be as high as 50 km's per hour, so we elected to explore the more sheltered route to the Memorial Lakes above Kananaskis Village. Ordinarily, Larry and I do not separate on our scrambles, but Larry was keen to summit Bogart Tower, and I was concerned about the strong winds, as well as our lack of strong documentation of the exact route. So I let Larry go ahead, and took photos from ridge below the Tower.
My car's GPS reading, at the northernmost point of my drive, at Patricia Lake, Jasper.
Units are selectable between US Imperial and metric, and I used metric units as long as my car was in Canada.
Just for curiosity I asked the GPS system to give me a routing back to my place in Southern California - and it came back with a distance totaling over 2,700 kilometers. Switching over to US units, it was over 1,700 miles. This is the farthest I've ever driven from my home, and certainly the first time I used my own car to be in a whole other country.
I'm not sure if it was the GPS system or where I was in Indiana, but I traveled through a bunch of country. I never saw a highway until I got to Ohio. The only things I passed were closed ice creams stands, cemeteries & barely standing barns.

It's hard to think that the GPS system at Brighton & Hove has been in place for over 10 years now. It has evolved over time, but the purpose remains the same - to provide real time information for the customer and operator alike. It is now also possible to download a very handy app for your iPhone, this displays a miniature version of these signs, and will even find the nearest bus stop based on you location.
Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Matthew Daus (thanks lempkin for the ID - originally I thought it was some random politician) gives a TV interview near Grand Central Terminal.
I suspect that this interview was regarding some of the new technology (GPS systems, etc) being introduced to NY cabs (I overheard something about text messaging), which have proved rather controversial, to the point where drivers are prepared to go on strike rather than accept the forced installation of such technology in their vehicles.
