That driver seat is quite comfortable. I began to require a car for a daily commute starting August 26, 2013, so I spend about 8 hours in this seat on average per week. There's a steering wheel button for voice commands, and it's very useful. It has a GPS system that's easy to use, a climate control system (with heated seats!) that gets me comfortable in anything from 9 to 96 degrees (I've driven this car over that temperature range so far). And, should the worst happen, there's 6 airbags in here as well.
On the summit of Arthur's seat is an Ordnance Survey trigonometric survey pedestal, now made redundant by the GPS system, and this mountain view indicator. Of particular interest to me is the NW line (straight left here) to Ben Lawers. I suspect that on the midsummer solstice on top of Arthur's Seat the sun sets behind Ben Lawers, the triangle of the mountain being a rough inscribed triangle in the circle of the sun.
The problem is that although if this happens, it will happen every year, it will only be visible if the visibility is pretty good and the horizon is clear of cloud. In Edinburgh such evenings are rare...
I have seen such a setting of the sun behind the black triangle of a mountain on the solstice twice, once from Arthur's Seat, and one from another hill I deduced later would in the line with Arthur's Seat. And many maps and much later I decided the mountain was probably Ben Lawers.
Does anyone have the astrogeographical skills to check that?

The ceremony was highlighted by the presentation of the Digitalisation Strategy, the foreword from the Ministry of Gender, Family and Child, the Ministry of EPME, the presence of Civil Society Organisations, and finally, the handing out of smartphones for entrepreneurial women in the 4 provinces of the project. These smartphones have an integrated GPS system and APP that will allow female entrepreneurs to connect, identify each other and start a digital network in the country.

I took this shot a very very long time ago and I've always wanted to post it but never really thought it was good enough. I saw this again the other day as I was scrolling through my archive and it stood out again, I just like the diagonal composition with two planes on exactly the same flight path, although obviously one is a lot higher than the other. Those GPS systems they use must be so accurate. I always wanted to be a pilot, ever since I was about 5 and I started to understand what flight was, I even joined the Air Training Corps and went up in a bulldog trainer and had a go at the controls. I quickly realised that the RAF was not for me though and you need a very big bank account to become a commercial pilot on your own. Ah well... I wonder where they're off to?
It's puzzling with our GPS systems. When we finish a hike we photograph the Garmin GPS machine as a "Just the facts" image. But then we started noticing that the distance at that point on the machine is different from the distance that displays on the hike profile when we download that data onto our computer. "Just the facts" shows 21 km's of distance, but the profile only 19.26. How come? We discovered Alltrails.com in doing research for hikes and now contribute to it. Their track of our hike suggest only 18.95 km's distance, which is odd, as Larry was carrying this machine when he did his solo conquest of the Bogart Tower, which would have made his actual distance longer than mine, as I carried the Garmin... Frustrating.
Although the forecast was for a warm day, the wind gusts in the region were predicted to be as high as 50 km's per hour, so we elected to explore the more sheltered route to the Memorial Lakes above Kananaskis Village. Ordinarily, Larry and I do not separate on our scrambles, but Larry was keen to summit Bogart Tower, and I was concerned about the strong winds, as well as our lack of strong documentation of the exact route. So I let Larry go ahead, and took photos from ridge below the Tower.
My GPS system insisted this was Main Street, Troy, MI, even though the street signs say it's Livernois. Maps bear the name Main Street, the actual street does not. Troy itself is one of those sprawling in all directions kind of towns that started as a point on a plot and mushroomed from there without any real civic planning. It has malls and busy corners and really good schools but no downtown indentity.
Day 64: Heading home! The display of my car's gps system. Solid blue lines means no traffic congestions on the highway, so I should make it in a 30 min drive.

1) Middle seats suck even more than I thought.
2) Airports piss a lot of people off.
3) Traveling without a 2-year-old, a pregnant wife and a car seat allows for much faster movement between gates.
4) I can fit a week's worth of business clothes in a carry on bag.
5) Make sure you confirm with Enterprise that by "mid-sized" car, they don't mean Seabring convertable.

Jeju island is also nominated to be one of the official finalist to the New7Wonders. Therefore, with such a reputation, Jeju island is filled with tourist and Koreans living in the mainland. Rental cars and tourist buses dominate the country roads. Driving in Jeju is surprisingly easy, most rental companies provide english speaking GPS systems complimentary with each rental agreement and all the road signs contain english street names. The only downside is the frustratingly long red lights.
During the first day of the year, many Koreans visit to witness the first sunrise of the year, reflect about the past year and make wishes for the future.
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge provides an ideal spot for walks and for horse riding as well. (KNTO)
