An entry into the Castle Siege category of the Colossal Castle Contest. This year I'm basing most of my CCC entries on The Peleg Chronicles book series. The layered landscape was inspired by Dubbadgrim and Brother Steven. I wanted to try doing a rounded tower and wall with sloped base while using a SNOT tile wall design, and I'm pretty happy with the result. The catapult and ballista are both functional, and you can see them in action here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPUikybEhKI&feature=youtu.be

Well, it's been just over a month since Barney had his FCE (spinal stroke), resulting in the paralysis of both his back legs. He gave us all a terrible scare but bless him, Barney has been a little superstar. Spinal strokes can happen in dogs of any age & even youngsters can take many weeks, or months to regain mobility. I was worried, given Barney's age & that he already has muscle wastage from arthritis, he'd struggle but as my dad said, Barney is "stoic" - he just keeps trying & keeps going!

In the days immediately after the stroke, Barney's back legs were totally non-functional - he had no feeling or awareness, couldn't move them or support any weight. By the end of that 1st week, he'd regained some feeling & the ability to slightly move his back legs - I'd tickle between Barney's pads & he'd kick my finger away, weakly at first but then with increasing vigor!

Since then, progress has been slow but steady. Barney is gradually regaining some movement & strength. The left hind is better than the right, but both are improving. He has a harness to support his back end & together, we "walk" around two playing fields most days. Early on, Barney's back legs hung limply... but then he began making swimming motions with them & now he's sort of at a limpy 3-legged hobble (hobbling is a good thing at this point!)!

Over the past fortnight, he's started actually using his left back leg. I see him place that paw down correctly & feel him weight-bear & push off with it. He still needs a lot of help, as he stumbles & misses steps but he's gaining confidence. Barney can also stand with minimal support & he's SO close to being able to independently rise to a stand. The main issue is that Barney still has limited awareness of where his feet are, so he knuckles over a lot but just in the last day or two, I've noticed that he's more frequently placing his paws the right way - pads down!

This pic was taken on one of Barney's "walks" in the fields. As you can see, he's bright & alert & keenly anticipating treats :) Barney will likely always need some assistance but I am SO pleased with the progress he's made already. The best old boy!!

Witton station is functional, perhaps that is the strength of the place. The station served two important functions it was the station for Villa Park, the home of Aston Villa FC, millions of supporters have set foot on these platforms. The other use was for workers, when Britain made goods the Aston/Witton area was packed with factories during wartime Kynoch were at full stretch making ammunition. Today most of the factories have long gone leaving residual industry like car scrap yards.

A college student in Hanoi, Vietnam, has spent up to $23,000 building his own Batmobile.

Nguyen Dac Chung, born in 1998, is a student of architecture and modelled his functional DIY project of the iconic supercar in the Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

Dac Chung said: “This product is a project that I have been cherishing for three years, and I have been working on it for more than 10 months."

Cool footage from September 5 shows the intricate design of the Batmobile that measures a nifty 3.6 metres long and 2.3 metres wide.

Dac Chung designed the car in 3D before building it himself. He ordered the tyres and wheels from America and South Korea and installed a full range of vehicle control systems, brakes, and lighting. Currently, Dac Chung is in the process of finishing the interior.

The beautiful Syndicate Trust Building in Downtown St. Louis, Missouri is hailed by many as the greatest example of Chicago School architecture in all of St. Louis. Designed by Eames & Young with Harry Roach in 1907, this grand tower is covered with lavish terra cotta ornament from its store-fronted ground floor to its handsome cornice. It once housed the upscale department store of Scruggs-Vandervoot-Barney and now finds new life rising 17 stories high as downtown St. Louis' most luxurious condominiums.

Following is a timeline of the "issues" the Syndicate went through before becoming the luxurious condominiums that it is today:

‧ The Syndicate's long-running troubles began in 1993, when developer Mark Finney purchased the complex at auction for $600,000. A sequence of events since then shows how precipitously close the Syndicate tower has come to demolition:

‧ 1994: After purchasing the building, Finney cleared out most of its tenants and gutted the lower six floor for conversion into a parking garage. Subsequent investigation revealed what Finney claims is inadequate structural support for a garage, a matter that resulted in a court case with his architect.

With the building's structure in question, Finney abandoned the garage plan, favoring demolition after he was unable to sell the building. The building has sat empty since then. Demolition has thus far blocked by the city, based on the building's landmark status.

‧ 1997: a court judge orders the city to pay Finney's then-asking price of $4.2 million; the city is unable to come up with the money. After a piece of masonry falls off the building, a fence is erected around the property, blocking sidewalks and streets.

‧ 1999: The city agrees to buy the building through emminent domain. A commission settles on a value of $6.2 million -- less than the $9 million Finney wanted, but more than the $2 million the city had offered previously. The city declines the deal.

‧ July 24, 2000: Finney's asking price for the building is six million dollars (ten times what he paid for it when it was a functional and occupied building); the city seeks to obtain the deteriorating property through condemnation.

September 14, 2000: St. Louis Circuit Judge Robert H. Dierker Jr. declares the building a hazard and gives the owner 30 days to file a demolition permit. Pyramid Construction Co. works to buy the building for development.

November 2000: Finney grants Pyramid an extension on the deadline to purchase the building.

‧ February, 2001: Finney threatens to begin demolition of the complex March 1st if Pyramid doesn't purchase the building by then.

‧ March 1, 2001: Pyramid's John Steffen is unable to secure the necessary capitol to purchase the building.

‧ March 2, 2001: Judge Dierker announces that he will approve demolition as soon as the owner files proof of a demolition contract.

‧ March 29, 2001: a mediator is appointed to negotiate a settlement between Finney and the city.

‧ June 2001: City development officials agree to pay Finney's asking price of $6.5 million for the complex.

‧ November 2001: Webster University plans to move into the Old Post Office. As part of the developments, the Century portion of the complex is slated to be torn down & replaced with a parking garage, part of a proposal by DESCO Group & consultant Steven Stogel.

‧ 2002-2004: Citizens and Landmarks of St. Louis mobilize to fight the demolition of the Century. Both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inexplicably, the National Historic Trust becomes a supporter of the Century's demolition, claiming that it is the only way to "save" the Old Post Office across the street (despite the fact that the Old Post Office, while vacant, was never in any danger of demolition.) Both buildings continue to sit idle and vacant.

‧ October 2004: Despite a pending court injunction, demolition begins on the Century Building.

‧ November 5, 2004: The City of St. Louis issues a Request for Proposals to renovate the Syndicate-Trust.

‧ February 2005: Century Building demo is essentially complete.

‧ April 5, 2005: Sherman Associates and Loftworks, LLC are awarded the contract to redevelop the Syndicate Trust. The building will hold 91 condominiums, 84 apartments, and street-level retail.

‧ November 2005: Work on the garage slated for the former Century Building site remains stalled (due to lack of funding?).

‧ 2006: Work commences on the Syndicate Trust renovation.

‧ July 2007: October move-in dates projected but the building finally officially reopens in 2008.

The model is built more for looks than for playability or functionality. It does have a working steering mechanism on both front axles, though, albeit not connected to a steering wheel. It is set up to synchronise their motion, with a different steering angle on the front axle than on the one behind it. (I intend to post a picture of the mechanism sometime in the next few weeks). This is a function that actually enhances the look.

Saugerties becomes a lighthouse in 1834. The lighthouse was placed at the mouth of the Esopus Creek to guide ships away from shallow areas when daily commercial and passenger transportation come into the port.

Construction began in 1835 by Charles Hooster, a residence of Saugerties. He won the job with the low bid of $2,988. The pier the lighthouse was built upon was made of chestnut cribbing and filled with stone. The original source of light came from 5 whale oil lamps with parabolic reflectors, but in 1850 the whale oil lamps were replaced with mineral oil lamps.

Yet after strides with this lighthouse, Congress passed a budget in 1867 for $25,000 to construct a newly developed lighthouse. It was built on a circular stone whose base is 18 m in diameter. The carpenters used the old mineral oil lamps from the original lighthouse in the new lighthouse building. Two years later in 1869 the newly built lighthouse became functional. This lighthouse is still the present-day light of the town of Saugerties.

Theme Rules:

Zzzzzip! Whether functional or decorative, zippers are one of the most commonly found fasteners in daily life. The same is true in the dolly universe! Think clothing and accessories such as zip-up jackets, purses, and thigh high boots. Think diorama pieces such as couch cushion covers, sleeping bags, or luggage. Or take an artistic approach and try zipper face makeup, tattoos, and unique graffiti art. How you approach this theme is entirely up to you. Just be sure a zipper is visible somewhere in your photo.

As with my yellow entry, again, I know I'm late :)

Oh these bloody red bottoms! Hells so high it's easy to fall, drop your handbag and see how zipper opens just to unleash every item the inside of it. Just about you were supposed to leave the house, perfect morning... ;)

Ant this is another last minute idea :) I wanted to give Tatyana some camera time and I have fallen in love with her all over again, she's a statuesque beauty! And those cheekbones, TDF! :D

"A super sports car soul and the functionality typical for an SUV: this is Lamborghini Urus, the world’s first Super Sport Utility Vehicle. Identifiable as an authentic Lamborghini with its unmistakable DNA, Urus is at the same time a groundbreaking car: the extreme proportions, the pure Lamborghini design and the outstanding performance make it absolutely unique. Urus’ distinctive silhouette with a dynamic flying coupé line shows its super sports origins, while its outstanding proportions convey strength, solidity and safety. Urus’ success factors are definitely the design, the driving dynamics and the performance. All these features allowed Lamborghini to launch a Super Sport Utility Vehicle remaining loyal to its DNA."

"The Koenigsegg Agera R was produced between 2011 and 2014. 18 examples of the Agera R were produced during that time.

The Agera R built upon the features and functionality of the Agera with new, unique solutions to enhance both performance and visual appearance even further.

Enhancements included: visible carbon on the front bonnet and bumper, new front side winglets, an all-new Aero exhaust, increased engine power with a raised RPM limit.

Koenigsegg was the first Hypercar manufacturer to take steps toward green technology with the release of the biofuel CCXR in 2007. The Agera R, based on the critically acclaimed Agera, follows in the footsteps of the CCXR as it also runs on biofuel.

The Agera R has an upgraded fuel and engine management system that allows it to run between 95 Octane and E100 biofuel, or any mix in between. The engine management system senses the fuel mixture and can adjust the engine’s operation ‘on the fly’..."

Not quite sure why I like this farm building, but I was quite taken with it. I think it's the clean lines and simplicity. The building is typical of the area, very plain and simple, and in their way quite stylish. They have to withstand the most extreme weather (note the colour of the sky) and be earthquake proof. The landscape is very bleak with no large trees, the tallest trees we saw were perhaps 2m, and skinny spindly things. Anything with any substance would be uprooted fairly fast in the frequent powerful winds.
