The magpie (Pica pica) is a species of bird in the corvid family. It inhabits large parts of Europe and Asia as well as northern North Africa. In Europe it is particularly common in urban areas. Due to its characteristic black and white plumage with the strikingly long tail feathers, it is also unmistakable for the ornithological layman.

The magpie is among the most intelligent birds and is believed to be one of the most intelligent non-human animals.[1] Relative to their size, the magpie's caudolateral nidopallium is about the same size as the functionally equivalent[2] prefrontal cortex of chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and humans.[3] The magpie is one of the few known birds to pass the mirror test, along with very few other non-avian species.

In popular belief, influenced by Nordic mythology, the magpie was considered the messenger of Hel, the goddess of death, so that in Europe it got the reputation of the messenger of evil. As a "thieving" magpie, it was also unpopular in the Middle Ages as a witch animal and gallows bird. In contrast, in Asia it is traditionally considered a good luck charm and the North American Hudson Magpie (Pica hudsonia), which has long been listed as a subspecies, is a spirit creature among the Native Americans that is friendly with humans.

Zur Blauen Stunde sahen wir bei starkem Wind und Schneetreiben auch Rentiere. War das eine wunderbare Begegnung mit diesen friedvollen Tieren.

At blue hour we saw reindeer with strong wind and blowing snow. It was a wonderful encounter with these peaceful animals.

Rentier (Rangifer tarandus)

Reindeer

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reindeer

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), also known as the caribou in North America,[3] is a species of deer with circumpolar distribution, native to Arctic, sub-Arctic, tundra, boreal, and mountainous regions of northern Europe, Siberia, and North America.[2] This includes both sedentary and migratory populations. Rangifer herd size varies greatly in different geographic regions. The Taimyr herd of migrating Siberian tundra reindeer (R. t. sibiricus) in Russia is the largest wild reindeer herd in the world,[4][5] varying between 400,000 and 1,000,000. What was once the second largest herd is the migratory boreal woodland caribou (R. t. caribou) George River herd in Canada, with former variations between 28,000 and 385,000. As of January 2018, there are fewer than 9,000 animals estimated to be left in the George River herd, as reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.[6] The New York Times reported in April 2018 of the disappearance of the only herd of southern mountain caribou in the lower 48 states, with an expert calling it "functionally extinct" after the herd's size dwindled to a mere three animals.

Tromsø is a municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Tromsø.

Tromsø lies in Northern Norway. The 2,521-square-kilometre (973 sq mi) municipality is the 18th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Tromsø is the 9th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 71,590 (2014). The municipality's population density is 30.6 inhabitants per square kilometre (79/sq mi) and its population has increased by 15.9% over the last decade.[6][7] It is the largest urban area in Northern Norway and the third largest north of the Arctic Circle anywhere in the world (following Murmansk and Norilsk). Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the island of Tromsøya, 350 kilometres (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. In 2017, the city of Tromsø had a population of about 65,000 people spread out over Tromsøya and parts of Kvaløya and the mainland. Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge.

The municipality is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. Tromsø is even milder than places much farther south of it elsewhere in the world, such as on the Hudson Bay and in Far East Russia, with the warm-water current allowing for both relatively mild winters and tree growth in spite of its very high latitude.

The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The city is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer. Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge of the electronica duo Röyksopp and Lene Marlin grew up and started their careers in Tromsø. Noted electronic musician Geir Jenssen also hails from Tromsø.

Weaver ants moving a dead millipede.

Wikipedia: Weaver ants or green ants (genus Oecophylla) are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae (order Hymenoptera). Weaver ants live in trees (they are obligately arboreal) and are known for their unique nest building behavior where workers construct nests by weaving together leaves using larval silk. Colonies can be extremely large consisting of more than a hundred nests spanning numerous trees and containing more than half a million workers. Like many other ant species, weaver ants prey on small insects and supplement their diet with carbohydrate-rich honeydew excreted by small insects (Hemiptera). Weaver ant workers exhibit a clear bimodal size distribution, with almost no overlap between the size of the minor and major workers. The major workers are approximately 8–10 mm (0.31–0.39 in) in length and the minors approximately half the length of the majors. Major workers forage, defend, maintain, and expand the colony whereas minor workers tend to stay within the nests where they care for the brood and 'milk' scale insects in or close to the nests.

Weaver ants vary in color from reddish to yellowish brown dependent on the species. Oecophylla smaragdina found in Australia often have bright green gasters. Weaver ants are highly territorial and workers aggressively defend their territories against intruders. Because they prey on insects harmful to their host trees, weaver ants are sometime used by indigenous farmers, particularly in southeast Asia, as natural biocontrol agents against agricultural pests. Although weaver ants lack a functional sting they can inflict painful bites and often spray formic acid directly at the bite wound resulting in intense discomfort.

Oldie from Isle of Mull , Scotland.

The Choir is a fundamental place in the spatial and functional conception of a Cathedral and its origin responds to a tradition linked to the Paleo-Christian basilicas, specifically in the “schola cantorum”. It is usual for the Choir to face the High Altar so that the liturgy can be followed. To this we must add that the cathedral clergy has altar and choir services as fundamental obligations, therefore, the Choir is an essential part, to the point that if there is no Choir there is no Cathedral.

The Choir is accessed through a Renaissance grille from the first half of the 16th century, completed by Francisco de Salamanca. The seats, made of different types of wood and where several authors took part, are from the beginning of the 16th century and have a magnificent sculptural and iconographic program. It should be noted that the 117 seat backs have completely different decorations, made with inlays based on Mudejar lacework. This type of Mudejar adornment in the Choir is only found in the Cathedral of Puebla in Mexico, where the influence of the Cathedral of Seville in New Spain is again evident.

In the center, a large Renaissance lectern, carved in wood, which was used to place the huge liturgical chant books. Dating from the second half of the 16th century, it was made, among others, by Juan Bautista Vázquez “the Old”, who also masterfully carved the Virgin with Child, who presides over the lectern.

Local urban legend has it that this sturdy landmark on Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard, photographed by George Lilley in 1949, was where prisoners were hanged. Of course, this could not be farther from the truth. A purely functional building, the Kingston Penitentiary water tower was completed in 1895 on the former site of the Penitentiary Farm, now West Campus of Queen’s University.

A hospital ward, could be anywhere I would think. It is functional too, as long as you know what kind of functions are included or excluded. Is a "sense of beauty" functional? Is a piece of art included in the functions offered by a hospital? A flower perhaps? Small things can make a big difference. Most important is the other thing one cannot see in this picture - the humanity of the hospital staff and the person-to-person contact between nurses, doctors and patients. Whatever the architecture. This area in the wetlands used to be a nice green grassy area with manicured bushes with a functional tennis court . It is now a fire hazard with a completely unusable tennis court filled with trash.

Above: A crowd in Lisbon, Portugal gathers to watch one of the games leading up to The World Cup between France and Belgium.

I think some people feel the same way about sports that I feel about huge election days. Though, not in a good way. I have a really hard time handling my crushing anxiety around days like today. I feel so nervous it's hard to go to work and be functional and I feel just about every emotion imaginable.

Currently, my biggest fear is that someone who is racist and non progressive like Joe Biden or Mike Bloomberg is going to win the nomination. I would be happy with either Sanders or Warren. We need a real progressive that is going to undo the four years of horror that we have all lived through. What we don't need is another billionaire that has no clue what most of the population really wants and, let's face it, with what Bloomberg is spending on ads, he could eradicate famine in the entire world. Anyone who makes the choices he's making, not time mention his racist stop and frisk past doesn't deserve to lead. These wealthy white men are deplorable. I can't take it anymore.

Lady Sparkle demonstrates another of her many talents...

It's been a while since I last added a camera to my collection, in fact I'm in the process of trying to downsize it, but I just couldn't pass this reasonably priced little Flexilette, a camera that had caught my eye several times in the past.

It is a rather unique camera in a sense that it's a TLR using 135 film. Only a handful other cameras by other brands used a similar approach, the pre-war Contaflex being the iconic model for this type of camera.

The Flexilette is a fully mechanical, all-manual, meterless camera the taking lens being a 2.8/45 Color-Apotar which according to online sources is a coated triplet. This fact alone puts the Flexilette in consumer / amateur enthusiast territory, although german triplets often produce stunning results, I for one am very pleased with the Triotar on my Rollei 35B.

The camera sports a waist-level finder which is not very big, but it's quite bright, definitely better than the finder of the Praktica VLC or the EXA-1 from behind the Iron Curtain. Focusing is aided by a retractable magnifying glass and a split-image rangefinder on the focusing screen. The finder is not interchangeable with a prism, so if one wants to shoot with the camera at eye level, they have to compose through a sports finder of sorts that is formed when the WLF flaps are deployed. Take care not to loose the small knob that releases the finder shaft, as it can be easily unscrewed during cleaning or carrying the camera in a bag.

Size-wise, the camera stands in a grey zone between a compact 35mm camera and a small SLR and it feels quite hefty with the lens protruding only a couple of centimeters, the shutter speed and aperture rings being quite narrow but easily accessible and moveable without feeling crowded.

The frame counter is manually reset and counts backwards from 36 as the frames are exposed.

My camera came in exceptional cosmetic and functional condition, along with the peculiar dedicated slip-on lens hood (it's the circular contraption visible on the right) and the close-up attachment of similar configuration which brings minimum focus distance from 0,6m to 0,38m, but sadly without a leather case. Build quality is good, but definitely not up there with Voigtlander or even Zeiss-Ikon. While some parts feel very solid, others feel like cutting production cost was a high priority in the minds of Agfa engineers. Overall operation of the camera feels quite smooth though, the leaf shutter (1s - 1/500s) is really quite and the focusing ring still turns very smoothly.

Overall, an interesting concept camera which wasn't a commercial success, although Flexilettes are not that difficult to find on the german auction site.

Taken for Saturday Self Challenge 19/03/2022 - Decorative .

First thought for this was the upper window in a big posh house , however , Jan did mention railways and they are always good for some embellishment on the older architecture . Here on this station the pillar supports to the station canopy are functional but on the load spreading supports at the top are quite decorative . I first tried a compressed view on platform two but not happy as I clipped the top a bit too tight plus a gutter got in the way from whichever end I took the shot . Platform one one the other hand presented a clear shot of the whole line of pillars with their elaborate top sections .

Also in shot is a passenger waiting on a seat , not sure about how he looks , but then this is the London platform - not a place to look forward to visiting as far as I am concerned .
