I stopped out at the Somerville Mine this afternoon hoping that the snow and cold temps would force some early daytime hunting for the raptors. At about 2:30 I found an area that just exploded with activity. In total I counted 27 Short-eared Owls, 3 Northern Harriers, 5 Rough-legged Hawks, 2 Red-tails and 1 American Kestrel all in sight at one time. The most surprising part was that most of the birds were having success finding rodents fairly quickly. Rather than the usual aerial combats over the catch, most of the raptors caught their dinner and found a spot where they were able to eat in peace. It was truly amazing to see how efficient they were at locating their prey below the snow. Fun stuff!
I just can't figure it out what did he do, by the way his name now is Davey, the winner of the giveaway was Ashley and Dino Davey will be on the way to his new home this week.
