Peaks Island, Maine USA • Beavers' • progress • update: Here in the Peaks Island Land Preserve, the beavers are rapidly transforming this isolated ecosystem. Ponds are multiplying and expanding; water levels are up more than three feet in some areas, since my last visit. • Beavers: Nature's Landscape Architects.
☞ FunFacts: Beavers eat the bark and spit the chips. –•– "They are the largest rodents (gnawing animals) in the world except for the capybara of South America. Unlike most other kinds of mammals, beavers keep growing throughout their lives. Most beavers look larger than they really are because of their humped backs and thick fur. Thousands of years ago, some beavers of North America were about 7 1/2 feet (2.3 meters) long, including the tail--almost as long as the grizzly bears. No one knows why these huge beavers disappeared." – from WorldBook's excellent summary.
And get this: an average beaver can cut down as many as 200 trees a year !
You might know, that most of the central stations in the Moscow subway are really pieces of art: each one has unique design that is different from the rest. This dog is one of the statues decorating the Square of Revolution subway station. Well, actually there are two of them there, but it doesn't matter. The thing is, there is a common belief among the students in Moscow: if you come to the station and rub the nose of the dog during the exam session, you'll have luck at the exams. You can see the result on the pic: the statues seem to be bronze, so all of them have this old brown bronze look, except for the 2 dogs' noses that are always polished and shiny. It's really funny.

Jelly fungi make rubbery, seaweed-like mushrooms. They are colored white, orange, pink, rose, brown or black. The mushrooms are shapeless, shaped like cups, railroad spikes or branched like coral. The common name of yellow to orange species is witches butter.
Jelly fungi are really different than other mushrooms. The basidia (spore-making cells) of most mushrooms are a single, club-like cell. They are found on ridges or lining tubes under the mushroom cap. The basidia of jelly fungi either have walls or are forked. They are located on the upper surface, not the lower surface.
The only species grown and sold in stores is clouds ear or woods ear (Auricularia auricula). It is used in soup. Some people like the slippery, crunchy texture.
Jelly fungi often grow on logs, stumps and twigs. Some species are parasitic on other fungi, mosses, ferns or seed plants. The best time to find them is in the fall or in the spring below melting snow banks. Their rubbery flesh may protect them from drying out and against freezing. They shrink when the air is dry and then swell up again when it rains. It may be why they are found in the spring and fall when other mushrooms are not.

The first known experiment with a national emergency telephone number occurred in the U.K. in 1937, using the number 999.[7] The first city in North America to use a central emergency number (in 1959) was the Canadian city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, which instituted the change at the urging of Stephen Juba, mayor of Winnipeg at the time.[8] Winnipeg initially used 999 as the emergency number,[9] but switched numbers when 9-1-1 was proposed by the United States.

Did you know that the Arlington Street Bridge was originally built to span the Nile River in Egypt? Apparently that project fell thru so a local engineering firm ended up using it to cross the Canadian Pacific Railway Yards here in Winnipeg.
From some further digging online there certainly is some dispute regarding this notion that it was built for the Nile.

Santanimal has a big block Ford engine but each wheel on the truck has it's own hydraulic drive to the drive motors in each axle tube. those motors control the forward or reverse motion of the wheels. The Santanimal has a steering wheel but no steering linkage. I am not certain how the steering wheel is used. The wheels do not turn from left to right, but this monster can turn 360 degrees by stopping one or more wheels from spinning. How everything works on this monster is pretty much a trade secret.
