I traveled to Forrest in western Victoria to take an early morning tour/canoe paddle with Otway Ecotours (http://www.platypustours.net.au/) to see platypuses in the wild. And see them with did. Have very good, if very horizontal, views of 4-5 platypus many times. They swim low in the water, so you see only the top of their bill, head, back and tail cruising along. Otway Ecotours told me not to bring an SLR camera because the noise who startle the platypus. So, all I brought was a cheap P&S camera with no telephoto (90mm), and no low light performance. I got some photos, but they were so bad I deleted them all. If you want to see platypuses in the wild, I highly recommend this tour.
