The spot made famous in Forrest Gump. Now an often crowded tourist attraction. It's even marked on the Googly Maps. Once, when I passed by here, there must have been 20 people standing in the road, trying to take a photo - and they would not get out of the way!

I hate playing tourist. I'm not even sure why we stopped, actually. Maybe Curt wanted to.

As we used the trees as umbrellas it was hard not to point up at the mist and shoot. Here is my buddy Chris doing just that.

Sunrise from the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park in Scotland

Last weekend we walked along a stream in a small nature reserve outside the city. Mid March and nature was still holding back. It was probably still too cold. Most of the forest floor was covered in last year's dry leaves, branches and twigs were bare and the air was cold. As we passed by a spruce forest, a delicate green shone on the forest floor beneath the spruces, a wonderfully soft and fluffy carpet of moss. The afternoon sun only lit small patches of the moss and it seemed somehow enchanted, as if only fairies and dwarves were missing and the picture would be perfect :-).

The George Washington National Forrest. After visiting Swannanoa and the Natural Chimneys we were rather aimlessly enjoying some very pretty back roads and talking about going on to a town called Monterey, not too far away. And then we made that fateful turn. The one that took us into the George Washington National Forrest. The totals acres for the combined George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are 1,646,328 acres in Virginia; 123,384 acres in West Virginia; and 961 acres in Kentucky. So a very large, big deal really. At first the roads were great, paved, two lanes and we were enjoying ourselves immensely with all the fall foliage and even took the time to visit two nice little lakes, one of which had Great bathroom facilities (an important point for two traveling ladies! LOL). There weren't any other people at these lakes, it being off season and all. Or on the road for that matter and before to long that road turned into what you see here. One lane. Gravel. And because of the rains some of it was quite muddy. But we were in The Jeep so what could that matter. Right? Tomorrow: The rest of the story! LOL. Enjoy the coming weekend everyone!
