The Long-tailed Tit, Aegithalos caudatus, is a very small passerine bird. It breeds in most of Europe and Asia. It is usually a non-migratory species, although there have been several extralimital records, and migration has been observed in north-eastern Europe.

The Long-tailed Tit is black and brown above and whitish below, with reddish flanks. It has a white crown. North European birds (A. c. caudatus) have completely white heads and flanks. There are several other subspecies which vary substantially in plumage (such as European birds have got black above eye and Turkish birds has got greyish "eyebrow" above eye and black thoat with grey scapulars). Hybridization between subspecies is common, and the hybridization zone between caudatus and europaeus seems to move in an easterly direction.

Long-tailed Tits are found in deciduous woodlands with significant undergrowth. This is a restless species, constantly on the move as it searches for insects and other small food items. During the autumn and winter, it is usually found in flocks of up to thirty individuals; it has been described as an avian sheep. During the breeding season (late February to July), Long-tailed Tits form monogamous pairs. (wikipedia)

These are always quite vocal and their presence is usually given away by their constant contact calls. Such a busy bird, always flitting through trees and the hedgerows but always a treat to see. I never tire of watching these fantastic characters. Taken along the River Dodder, Dublin, Ireland.

Certainly in this unprecedented year, the sight of any form of 'timber' train albeit empty is unusual in the North West, so this had to be recorded. A question, is the yellow end of the loco compliant as it seems to a very much lighter shade of yellow compared with all the other TOC / FOC's? 30th July 2020.

My personal stay-at-home abstract photography project for today.

Some cheesecloth was used because it is broadly woven and it is easy to see the threads. Some slightly warm toning was added, and there is a little "glow" as well.

Time for a quick splash of colour in my photostream. This was taken at Frensham small pond this morning (blimey it was cold) just at the point when the mists formed as the Sun came up.

Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California. Declared a U.S. National Park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act (Public Law 103-433), it had previously been a U.S. National Monument since 1936. It is named for the Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) native to the park. It covers a land area of 790,636 acres (1,235.37 sq mi; 3,199.59 km2) —an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. A large part of the park, some 429,690 acres (173,890 ha), is a designated wilderness area. Straddling the San Bernardino County/Riverside County border, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park.

The rock formations of Joshua Tree National Park were formed more than 100 million years ago from the cooling of magma beneath the surface into monzogranite, with roughly rectangular joints. Groundwater then filtered through the joints to erode away the corners and edges to create rounded stones, and flash floods washed away covering ground to create piles of boulders. These prominent outcrops are known as inselbergs.

Funny how every day when you're going to photograph the same people, those who fish, walk, run, cyclists and the man who every morning looking for shells did the same thing ....

Happy Easter

Then you see ...
