Sedimentary formations dot the landscape of Southern Africa between Upington, South Africa and Luderitz, Namibia. This is evidence that at one time in the past eons, this whole area was underwater. Image taken from a small plane flying over this barren yet colorful landscape with a personality all its own.
The interesting thing was to see how they ended up in this tight grouping. I was driving along and stopped to check the cows out as the light was very nice. They were walking along in a very loose group. When they saw me they turned and slowly curved into a tighter and tighter group until they were about 50 feet from me and then they just stopped and stared. Cows are very curious.
30 ish miles from my house is this fantastic set of rock formations in a red mesa. I have always wanted to go explore it and take pictures, especially a sunrise picture with the San Fransisco peaks (Flagstaff, AZ.) in the background. Me and my young son took off at five am, and where able to capture these shots. This is pure South West, USA landscape. God loves you! www.bbctkd.com/salvation

Snaefellsnes peninsula
The 90-kilometer long Snaefellsnes Peninsula sits just to the northwest of Reykjavik. Often called “Iceland in miniature,” the peninsula is home to many of the beautiful landscapes found elsewhere in the country. If you don’t have time to drive around the entire island, a visit to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula will give you an idea of what you would have seen if you had – moss-covered lava rocks, craggy seaside cliffs, strange rock formations made bay the sea, a giant glacier, majestic fjords, windswept beaches, tiny fishing villages and even some rolling farmlands dotted with sheet and horses to boot.

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area 15 miles west of Las Vegas is an area managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of its National Landscape Conservation System, and protected as a National Conservation Area. The area is visited by more than two million people each year.
The conservation area showcases a set of large red rock formations: a set of sandstone peaks and walls called the Keystone Thrust. The walls are up to 3,000 feet (910 m) high, making them a popular hiking and rock climbing destination. The highest point is La Madre Mountain, at 8,154 feet (2,485 m).

Weka Pass is a gorge located in the northern Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island between the towns of Waipara and Waikari.
The Waipara River cut the Weka Pass by wearing down the soft limestone and mudstone in the area. Erosion has created a number of distinctive limestone formations in the pass, which are known by descriptive names such as Frog Rock and The Seal. The Pass is home to various species of bird, including the weka, kākā, and kiwi, and was also home to the extinct moa.
Māori rock art can be found under a limestone overhang, and it is now the prime attraction of the Weka Pass Historic Park. Māori first explored the area approximately a millennium ago and used the limestone overhang for shelter. Early European explorers utilised the overhang for the same purpose.
State Highway 7 runs through the Weka Pass, and so does a railway line. This railway was established in 1882 and although originally intended to be part of the Main North Line from Christchurch to Nelson and Blenheim, the main line ultimately took a coastal route northwards from Waipara and the line through the Weka Pass became part of the Waiau Branch. This branch line operated until 15 January 1978, and the section through the Weka Pass has been saved by a preservation group, the Weka Pass Railway. It is now one of the premier restored/tourist railways in New Zealand.

Waikari is located on State Highway 7 near the Weka Pass and was served by the Waiau Branch railway from 6 April 1882 until its closure on 15 January 1978. The section of the railway through the Weka Pass has been retained by the Weka Pass Railway and preserved trains operate between Waipara and Waikari.
The town is also located near the site of Māori cave art and rock drawings in the Weka Pass Reserve.

We were in Newport to watch my oldest son run a half marathon this weekend. Yesterday morning, on the beach, I found a sight I have never seen before...rows and rows of formations from the wind. Some looked just like space ships, others were spinning tops, mushrooms, pottery. It was quite a sight!!! and my son was first in his division! a fun weekend with my son, his wife and my two oldest grandkids. oh and my husband too!
I tried a number of things to capture the true beauty of this water fall and rock formation. I bracketed exposures. I thought that hdr was the answer to bring the different light levels together. I thought that perhaps a different angle would be better. Wouldn't you know that a simple cropped long exposure was what I finally posted. Back to basics. Funny how we sometimes forget about it. Go figure....
I can hardly wait to revisit Conkle's Hollow again.

I have talked many times about how much I love taking long exposure images, particularly when I’m in places with lots of fast moving clouds above interesting landscapes.
So when I made my way to Praia de Adraga, watching the sun slowly descending through the clouds towards the horizon, I looked for a couple of interesting rock formations, set my tripod out and set the ND filters on top of the lens to get as much of a long exposure as I can. The shutter speed varied around the 30 seconds mark, but because there was quite a bit of wind, the clouds were moving a lot during this short amount of time creating these blurs of colour with the sun rays bursting out from time to time.
On another note, I just wanted to thank you for the great response to my Iceland workshop I have just announced. There are already three people confirmed so it seems there are lots of people out there as excited as I am about photographing Iceland!
