Ah, yes, a not-unusual day for our winters. A little warmer than usual maybe but it happens often enough. We're in a La Niña cycle when it's supposed to be colder & drier but so far, it's not been that cold. While I get depressed at rarely seeing the sun in our winters, I'd rather have rain than cold. I still go out grocery shopping in flip-flops (I have warm feet) & as we LOVE to say out here, at least we don't need to shovel the rain! :-D
The wind has eased but rainfall is expected to be 60-80 mm in the warning. And we are on the other side of the river from Abbotsford & elevations rises sharply on our side so we'll get heavier amounts. Good thing the ground soaks up the water well!

In a ground-breaking humanitarian action triggered by a forecast of flood risk, the Uganda Red Cross (URCS) distributed just under 5,000 preparedness items to communities in Kapelebyong sub-county, some 300 km north-east of the capital, Kampala, in November 2015. The non-food items (NFI) were procured under ‘forecast-based financing’ with the support of the German government through the German Red Cross. The URCS mobilized the supplies as soon as a predetermined threshold of forecast risk was crossed a day ahead of the operation. “One of the disaster effects we are targeting is waterborne disease,” said Irene Amuron, URCS Disaster Risk Reduction Manager, who led the operation. Local Acting Chief Administration Officer Paul Edotu had indicated that dysentery existed in the area, and the authorities were anxious to prevent it. Amuron added: “The teams have distributed two jerrycans, two bars of soap, and a month’s supply of water purification tablets to 370 households in the villages of Okoboi, Omatai, Apedu and Akulonyo,” all initially trucked from Kampala. “The Uganda Red Cross are immediate responders in times of disaster,” said URCS Secretary General Robert Kwesiga. “By using forecasts in we are now intervening even earlier, before receiving reports of disasters. The NOAA HWT Experimental Forecast Program (EFP) is focused on the use of computer models of the atmosphere to improve predictions of hazardous and convective weather events from a few hours to a week in advance, and over several counties to the continental U.S. The EFP supports the NWS goal to increase lead-time and accuracy for weather and water warnings and forecasts. The NOAA HWT EFP Spring Experiment is a yearly project that investigates the use of convection-allowing model forecasts as guidance for the prediction of hazardous convective weather. A variety of model output is examined and evaluated daily, and experimental forecasts are created and verified to test the applicability of cutting-edge tools in a simulated forecasting environment.

Summary: The Spring Forecasting Experiment provides opportunities for forecasters to provide feedback to ensure that new guidance products and visualization approaches meet their needs. This is a unique opportunity to see and influence the future of NWS forecasting tools for high-impact weather.
* The experiment is directly aligned with NOAA FACETs and Warn-on Forecast (WoF) programs, including examination and evaluation of real-time forecasts from a prototype WoF ensemble system.
* Activities are formulated to provide evidence-based information on how best to design convection-allowing models and ensemble systems, which is accomplished through contributions to the Community-Leveraged Unified Ensemble (CLUE) by EMC, GSL, NCAR, NSSL, and GFDL.
* The SFE supports NOAA plans to develop a simplified, unified forecast system (UFS) centered on the FV3 dynamic core. A prototype FV3-based CAM system called the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS) will be evaluated against the operational HRRR and HREF for severe weather forecasting applications..
* New testing and evaluation activities for SFE 2023 will include examinations of regional and global-with-nest versions of the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS). New extended range (Days 3-8) CAM ensemble evaluations will also be conducted.

I am adding another five photos from my archives, yet again. If I wrote a description under a previously posted photo taken on the same outing, I will add it to this morning's uploads.
"Having seen the weather forecast for another snow storm, I made a quick decision to get back to the mountains - I don't drive there when there is snow on the roads. It was going to be sunny, but unfortunately, it was also very windy, which gave me a lot of not-quite-sharp images. Also, much of the highway through Kananaskis is closed for the winter months, for the protection of the wildlife.
There were three or four locations that I wanted to photograph with snow on the peaks. With scenic shots in my mind, I took the south route, this time avoiding the dusty, gravel back road that I love to drive. Normally, I would never do a drive like this on a weekend day - more cars and people.
Much of the drive was similar to my trip with friend, Pam, on 5 September. A little over a month ago already? The first part of my drive, before turning around and heading home, I had done before, but I had never driven myself the most northerly part. I really wanted to make sure I did this while I could, rather than have to leave it till next year, as I might have lost courage by then. Actually, this north stretch had not been in my plans, but as it was not yet noon, I decided to do it, driving further than Pam and I had gone. A couple of extra stops were added - Barrier Lake and Lorette Ponds.
Keeping a close eye on how much gas was left, it was time to turn around and go back home the same way as I had driven earlier in the morning. Lots of animals on the road - mainly cattle! I don't think I have ever seen so many cows on the road before - and, oh, what a mess they were leaving behind them, everywhere! They were as stubborn about moving off the road as the three groups of Bighorn Sheep I came across during the day. I guess cows, too, like licking salt and other minerals off the road surface.
So many people were out to go hiking and there were lots of cars parked in many places. On my return drive, I was not too impressed to see about a dozen cars lined up along the edge of the road - thinking 'hikers' and then suddenly thinking "bear?" As I drove past, I caught a glimpse of three brown shapes in the long grass. I did what I don't like doing - a U-turn and adding myself to the end of the line. My handful of highly zoomed photos were all taken through the windshield, turning them into green-tinted blurs. I have added three of them, just for the record. Not sure if I can rescue any others. I tried to read the blurry number on the pink ear tag, which may have shifted upside down, on her right ear. She was busy feeding in the long grass with her two cubs, totally oblivious of the audience. I didn't notice if many people were out of their cars - I know the female idiot (oops, I mean 'driver') of the car in front of me, got out and walked down the road in the direction of the bears, but I couldn't see where she disappeared to. Eventually, a Park ranger arrived and shooed the beautiful bear family into the trees. Such an unexpected sighting and thrill - definitely the highlight of my 440 km drive. If I am right, I think I had only ever seen two Grizzlies in Alberta in all these years - a female with one cub."

The forecast for the drive through the high country just west of Denver read "chain law" until just before we left. The chain law means that all traffic *must* stop to put chains on each tire. Many of the roads up in this area are seasonally closed. By the time we got to these mountain areas, the snow had already melted off the roads, but the forests around us and peaks above us were still covered in fresh snow.

Portland Harbour was occupied by the Royal Navy until 1997, ending an association that goes back to the 1500s.
Portland Port Ltd. and Portland Harbour Authority Ltd were established in 1996 to manage the transition from Naval to Commercial use, and today the deep-water and sheltered harbour is home to a growing freight facility, yacht marina, purpose-built cruise passenger terminal and, since April 2000, the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy - the waters of Weymouth Bay are reputed to have the best conditions for sailing in Northern Europe, and made the Academy the obvious location for the sailing events of London's successful bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. And given the International Olympic Committee's concerns about Rio's readiness, there is a possibility they could return in 2016 ....
