Not liking it but still not complaining!
Ay 8pm it is very sticky with 84% humidity & thunderstorms said to arrive by 11.
The town I live in (Grimsby, Ontario) is a soft-fruit farming area and at this time of year blossoms are what you go out and see. The weather, however, has been cold and wet so everything is about 2 weeks behind a 'normal' year. I went out a couple of days ago to try to capture some blossoms West of town and left early to try and catch some light before the multi-day rains were forecast to set in. You can actually see the leading edge of the front in the upper left of the frame. But for a brief time I did have some light.
The farms here not only grow fruit, bu,t in addition to any commercial distribution, frequently sell a portion of their crop in small road-side fruit stands. This small one for cherries was sitting tucked behind a stand of lilac shrubs along old Highway 8, waiting to be dragged out in about 6-8 weeks to pull in the cars looking for properly tree-ripened fruit.
I liked the sun shining directly into the camera and the resulting shadows of the trees, but sadly, only a faint hint of blossoms here. Maybe this week if the rains don't simply strip off the blossoms.... - JW
This is a 3-image HDR. The images were taken using a hand-held (not really a good idea, trust me on this) Nikon D5000 fitted with an 18-55mm VR kit lense set to 22mm, ISO400, auto-bracket mode set to EV+/-2 for a 3 shot group, Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 1/400sec. The 3 images were then HDR processed using Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as shown below. Additional PP was done using GIMP: adjust tone curve to restore a full tonal range, to the base HDR loaded in as the top layer with an alpha channel added, loaded in as one layer below the base HDR was the EV+0 image (i.e. the reference image) and using
a large soft-edged eraser, erased the HDR layer area around the base of the lilac shrubs on the right to eliminate registration issues arising from camera movement during the multiple hand-held exposures (told you hand holding HDR sequences is not a good idea) and selectively in other small areas, selected the end of the cart with the word 'CHERRIES' and bumped up the saturation of the red channel only to make the letters stand out better, cropped off a small portion of the left edge to remove mis-registration issues arising from the hand-held image mis-alignments, sharpened, added border, and scaled to 1024 wide for posting.

WEATHER FORECASTING: It's an art! It's a science! It's impossible! Whatever your position, it's tough not to enjoy trying to forecast winter weather on the basis of the size and ratio of the 13 segments of Woolly Bear's stripes. What do you think - a nice warm winter? or a cold tough winter?

Planned to visit the buildings on Nov 26th... then the weather forecast threatened to cancel the day, but Marty made an executive decision to go, so we did. It ended up just being three of us: Marty Straub, Mo Devlin and Me (there was quite a large group that was planning on going, but didn't because of the weather and other factors).

In a ground-breaking humanitarian action triggered by a forecast of flood risk, the Uganda Red Cross (URCS) distributed just under 5,000 preparedness items to communities in Kapelebyong sub-county, some 300 km north-east of the capital, Kampala, in November 2015. The non-food items (NFI) were procured under ‘forecast-based financing’ with the support of the German government through the German Red Cross. The URCS mobilized the supplies as soon as a predetermined threshold of forecast risk was crossed a day ahead of the operation. “One of the disaster effects we are targeting is waterborne disease,” said Irene Amuron, URCS Disaster Risk Reduction Manager, who led the operation. Local Acting Chief Administration Officer Paul Edotu had indicated that dysentery existed in the area, and the authorities were anxious to prevent it. Amuron added: “The teams have distributed two jerrycans, two bars of soap, and a month’s supply of water purification tablets to 370 households in the villages of Okoboi, Omatai, Apedu and Akulonyo,” all initially trucked from Kampala. “The Uganda Red Cross are immediate responders in times of disaster,” said URCS Secretary General Robert Kwesiga. “By using forecasts in we are now intervening even earlier, before receiving reports of disasters. With such a timely disbursal, we hope to avoid potential catastrophe before it even happens, supporting people to continue working and going to school.” (Photo: Denis Onyodi/URCS-Climate Centre)

The NOAA HWT Experimental Forecast Program (EFP) is focused on the use of computer models of the atmosphere to improve predictions of hazardous and convective weather events from a few hours to a week in advance, and over several counties to the continental U.S. The EFP supports the NWS goal to increase lead-time and accuracy for weather and water warnings and forecasts. The NOAA HWT EFP Spring Experiment is a yearly project that investigates the use of convection-allowing model forecasts as guidance for the prediction of hazardous convective weather. A variety of model output is examined and evaluated daily, and experimental forecasts are created and verified to test the applicability of cutting-edge tools in a simulated forecasting environment.

The forecast on 19th June 1999 was for an entire day of rain, so a day trip on the train and a pub lunch in Douglas seemed like a very good way to spend the day with my wife and parents. Having just boarded the train I took this 'grab shot' out of the carriage window of the Port Saint Mary crossing keeper/station master chatting to the train crew. I am pleased that I did, as automated barriers were soon installed. The 'garden shed' at this time was the station master's accommodation, but this was relocated shortly after this to the station building itself. The former gate-keeper's dwelling can be seen through the steam beyond. This had been sold off by the railway for use as a private dwelling and it has been modified in recent times including a new roof, with much extension work being carried out in 2022. Rather sadly, the historic single storey dwelling is now largely unrecognisable from its previous original form.
