The 39th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is being hosted by Buzios, Brazil in the Bay of Buzios, from the 10th to the 17th July 2009. This event is the pinnacle of the youth sailing calendar, with past notable winners including American's Cup skippers, Chris Dickson (NZL), Russell Coutts (NZL), Dean Barker (NZL); Olympic medallists, Robert Scheidt (BRA), Amelie Lux (GER), Ben Ainslie (GBR), Nick Rogers (GBR) and Siren Sundby (NOR); Volvo Ocean Race sailors like Stuart Bannatyne (NZL) and Jordi Calafat (ESP)

Letter of Application and Testimonials for Oliver J. Lodge for the Chair of Experimental Physics at University College, Liverpool, 1881
Lodge was Assistant-Professor of physics at University College, London when he applied for the post at the newly established University College at Liverpool. His letter of application gives details of his academic career and his plans to establish a laboratory at Liverpool, to inspire students with a love of the subject, and to develop a programme of evening classes, mentioning his own experience of studying in the evenings and stating that he ‘should be glad to help young men in like condition’
The application includes testimonials from colleagues at University College, London, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and from his friend and mentor, Professor G. F. Fitzgerald.
During his time at Liverpool, Lodge lectured on the ether and discovered the electrostatic condensation of fog. He also carried out experiments on the electromagnetic field, producing electromagnetic waves guided along wires using discharge from a Leyden jar in 1888 during work on lightening conductors.
He returned to experiments with radio waves in the 1890s and, with the help of Alexander Muirhead, gave the first public demonstration of radio telegraphy, using the method of signaling in Morse code via long and short pulses. He demonstrated his radio-wave receiver apparatus at the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Liverpool in 1896. Lodge also lectured on X-rays in Liverpool the same year

The young man in the middle is the only one who did anything to help Adam when he tried to treat the woman who had been savagely beaten by her scumbag husband. The other man is his uncle. We had lunch with them in Dhaka before Adam left Bangladesh.

For two days (40kms) the Via Tolosana follows the "Rigole de la plaine" a tributary of the Canal du Midi. This is not a natural stream, but a manmade structure feeding water from Montagne Noir into the canal. The construction of this meandering stream (it follows the contour lines) started in 1668. It is a nice, slightly descending walk under shady trees with much time to think about the genious ideas of Pierre-Paul Riquet.

Photos from this year's annual Ride For Hope. The event brings organizations and individuals from throughout the Bahamas together in support of the national fight against cancer. The Ride for Hope fund supports cancer detection, treatment, research, patient care, and public awareness. treatment, research, patient care, and public awareness campaigns. The Island School and CEI team, which included Chris Maxey, Annabelle Brooks, Michelle O’Shea, Mackey Violich, Franchesca Bethell, Liz Henry and Jocelyn Curtis-Quick, was excited to ride bikes and raise funds as they collectively logged 370 miles and raised more than $2000. The Cape Eleuthera Island School (CEIS) matched the rider’s effort for a combined donation of $5000.

So I've basically wanted to do a Hunger Games themed picture for a while now, and I had just bought that dress a little bit before my birthday, it's light blue. When I wore it for my birthday dinner with a ton of gold jewelry, I was thinking about how I wanted to take a picture with it and rock the side braid because it looks movie Katniss :)
I personally loved the movie, it's one of the only book to movie's I've liked for quite some time now... but when you think about the story line- book or movie.... it's quite disturbing. I couldn't help but feel my heart get wrenched out multiple times in both- it doesn't matter, the message is clear.
This picture has so many flaws in it I can't even count. I really wanted this to be a good picture.... tomorrows another day. Another try.
Oh and if you haven't listened to Taylor Swift "Eye's Open" song on the Hunger Games soundtrack, go listen. It's beautiful and the title for this picture is directly from the song :)
Here are two elderly women preparing to go to the early morning market the next morning. They sell roots and herbs that they grow them self and get from family and friends. I know one of them and she says she does not need to sell at the market but she still does because its a good way to meet and interact with people. I think it is a good thing to sell some things when you are old even tough its not many things but it gives you a reason to wake up in the morning and you have some things to aim at each day. For some old people it can be hard to stop working because they are used to the daily routine.
On this photo I did some extra post work that I usually don't do but I just thought it would fit well for this photo. I started in camera raw like always but I also added some blur in photoshop, not much but just enough so you look directly at them. I used the same way as when you make miniature effect like in so many time laps videos.

CLOSUP, the Ford School's Center for Local, State, & Urban Policy, held a discussion about the findings from the Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS), which asked leaders from 1,329 of Michigan's local governments to report on the future of public services in their jurisdictions in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The survey concluded that a majority of Michigan's local leaders think our system of funding local governments is broken. CLOSUP Director Barry Rabe, Program Manager Thomas Ivacko, and Project Manager Debra Horner presented on the survey findings and the solutions suggested by these leaders.
This event is part of the year-long celebration of President Ford's Centennial, honoring a citizen, public servant, and leader.

Michael wasn't of my generation .... but I am still saddened by his early passing ... how can one not be saddened by such a young life gone ... gone ... he was a brilliant musician, artist, innovator, perfectionist, talented beyond ... he set so many standards in the world of music.
Michael was adored and loved by millions around the world ... but he was so, so very lonely. I don't think he ever found what he was really looking for ... in this world. Hopefully he has now. His music will live on for many years and will be listened to by generations to come.
Michael, may you now find the peace and love you so desperately wanted and needed in your life. You will be so dearly missed.
These are especially for a dear Flickr friend of mine who is going through a very difficult time after losing her Dad suddenly at Christmas. I hope these brighten your day a little Christine and let you know that you are often in my thoughts.xxx
