For most who live in towns larger than mine (that would be anyone living anyplace with a population over 9000), downtown may seem like a non-event. I prefer to think of it as quaint. Here, Aradan graciously hangs from some bridge railings across the river from the famous Coke sign. It is famous. Really.
Nothing lasts forever. Everything fades away, but nothing is eternal. Do I believe that? Does it matter? I do know that, for all the times that I've got nothing to say, nothing can put an end to my silence. I understand that nothingness is comforting in a way, that for all the busy-ness going on around me, there will always be a time that I can step back and be absent from myself. Just like when I'm asleep. I know that, for some small part of the night, when I'm lost away into some dream or nightmare, unaware and unremembered hours pass by unnoticed until dawn. Where does the time go? Does it matter?
I don't want to sound like I'm unconcerned about the passage of time, but I don't want to give the impression that I'm constantly aware of it, either. Would that image be accurate or not? There's no denying that I find it hard to settle down, to tune out and separate myself from the ever-passing moment. There's something strange about writing your thoughts from a place of disconnected observation, the naked awareness of self watching self, as if waiting for change will somehow make it come to pass. But we all need a nature, and that is mine. Always has been. Sometimes, when I'm looking for a better conclusion to my personal story, I find myself creating situations that I "do something". I start a conversation, visit a place, make a friendship. That what's it like when you feel more like a character than an author, when perhaps you shouldn't be feeling like either.
There's no easy end to any thought, as I discover the more that I write. I used to believe that every story you tell is some sort of lead-in to fantasy, an escape from a reality that's apparently too hard to handle. Writing has become more like a chain than a train of thought, a series of iron links that wrap around me and the person I'm trying to reach. Readers are so unidentifiable, they rarely speak for themselves. Maybe we've been inventing a world where everyone is fishing but no one is taking the bait. What does that say about us as air breathers? Maybe, in the end, we're all just gasping for water.

Mario Balcazar, a PhD student in nuclear engineering and radiological sciences, working with an infrared viewer on the ZEUS laser alignment procedure in preparation for an experiment at the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science on the North Campus of the University of Michigan on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. When the laser operates in low-power mode work can safely be completed wearing goggles, however when the laser runs at high-power the radiation emitted during the pulse-matter interaction is too high for a human to be in the same room.
The Center for Ultrafast Optical Science is advancing high-energy density physics using laser driven particle accelerators.

Organizing for America, the national network of Obama supporters, is revving up support for healthcare reform with a bus tour that started in Phoenix. The "Health Insurance Reform Now" bus will make 11 stops between August 26, 2009 and when members of Congress return to Washington, hitting up Albuquerque, N.M., Denver, Raleigh, N.C., and Pittsburgh.
In this photo the Health Care Reform Now Bus moves onto the city streets of Phoenix to continue its long journey across the U.S., next stop, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
OK, it is time for me to work through some of my bird and other wildlife pictures from Costa Rica. For those that have visited this country, you will know that the sheer numbers and the extraordinary diversity of species is quite amazing. Every day we would continue to be amazed by all the birds and other animals that we got to see.
In the rain forest of Costa Rica, our first stop near the Sarapiqui River, we got to see a lot of fruit loving birds, including this Blue-gray Tanager. This particular tanager is found from Brazil through to Mexico and was quite prolific here, sneaking in to get some bananas whenever the toucans were not in the way.
"Connecting Our Communities" is a campaign fundraising event and celebration!

Jennifer’s legislative experiences around social justice have been extensive while serving as a cohort for Urban Habitat’s Social Equity Caucus and as a leader for various Asian Pacific American organizations. After assisting internationally on behalf of environmental issues, Jennifer returned to her local community, to provide conservation education to Hayward schools, to reduce blight as a member of the Keep Hayward Clean and Green Task Force and to decrease crime while serving on Alameda County’s Family Violence Council.
Jennifer served as the Chair of the Gender and Racial Equity Committee and completed her term as the first appointed Chair of the Budget Committee of the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women. Acknowledging her experiences as a Filipino immigrant at 11 years old, Jennifer possesses a deep appreciation for the many ways we can all advance the cause of a more just and respectful diverse society.
After acquiring accessible capital for a small business loan, Jennifer purchased and continues to successfully manage her own optometric practice for over 12 years. Asilomar (Spanish for "retreat" or "refuge by the sea") was designed as the Young Women's Christian Association's national camp and conference grounds in the West. It is significant for its role in the work of the Association and in the development of the Monterey peninsula as a resort area. It is also notable architecturally, as an example of its style and as an outstanding work by Julia Morgan, a noted California architect, who was one of the first women to achieve eminence in the architectural profession in the United States.
The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), which pioneered in recreation and leadership training for young women, established Asilomar in 1913. Previously, the YWCA's western conferences had been held at Mills College, near Oakland, California, in 1897; at the Hotel Capitola ("Guardamar"), in Santa Cruz, which burned in 1912, in 1900-11; and in tents at the "hacienda" of Mrs. Phoebe Apperson Hearst, of the publishing family, in 1912. In 1913, Mrs. Hearst, a vigorous supporter of the YWCA movement, motivated the Pacific Improvement Company (a predecessor of the present-day Del Monte interests), to donate to the "YW" 30 undeveloped seaside acres in Pacific Grove that became the nucleus of Asilomar.
The task of developing Asilomar fell to Julia Morgan (1872-1957). Morgan was the first woman to receive an architect's license in California. She had also been the first woman accepted in the architecture section of L'Ecole de Beaux- Arts in Paris. When she took on the Asilomar project, Morgan had already designed the main buildings at Mills College and additions to Mrs. Hearst's "hacienda."
The historic core of the Asilomar Conference Grounds contains 11 buildings, all designed by the noted American architect, Julia Morgan, in a rustic "Craftsman" mode intended to fit sensitively into the scenic oceanside location. Built among the dunes and Monterey pines of Asilomar Beach, the buildings utilize compatible materials such as redwood shingles and shakes, exposed stone foundations, porch piers, and fireplaces.
The focal point of the complex is the large circle flanked on the three land sides by the Administration Building (east), the Chapel (north), and the Crocker Dining Hall (south). Dormitory facilities lie to the east and north of this core. Access roadways, following Morgan's plan, wind through the complex from the massive stone entrance gates, also designed by her; retaining walls are of exposed stone; and pathways are often lined with stone where they cut into the grade. New constructionhas occurred around the edges of the historic core. It does not obscure the view from the historic structures to the sea.
The features that remain from the historic period are: the Entrance Gates (1913), Administration Building (Phoebe A. Hearst Social Hall) (1913), Crocker Dining Hall (Mary A. Crocker Kitchen and Dining Room) (1918), Memorial Chapel (1915), The Lodge (Visitor's Lodge) (about 1918), Scripps Lodge (1927-28), Viewpoint (originally the "Health Cottage") (about 1918), Hilltop ("Stuck-Up Inn") ("House of Happiness") (about 1918), Outside Inn (about 1913), Merrill Hall (1927-28), Tide Inn ("Pirates Inn") ("Reserve Cottage") (1923), Pinecrest (David Visel's Cottage) (1927-28), Along with the road plan, the Morgan-era structures are all judged to contribute to the historic significance of the complex.

Efter kontakt med en representant för Uspastorps hemsida som bor strax intill fick jag följande information:
Stenbyggnaden är en jordkällare och det är en vanlig missuppfattning att det var en bostad. På andra sidan vägen sett från jordkällaren finns en liten skogsdunge, där finns resterna av grunden till bostadshuset. Det lär ha varit en ladugårdsliknande byggnad där djuren höll till i ena ändan av huset och så bodde man i den andra. I boken - Ett torp i Starrkärr-Kilanda socknar framgår följande:
"Per Larsson född 1798, hustru Karin Andersdotter född 1797. Barnen hette Lotta, Anders, Johannes, Lars, Anna Maria (född 1837) och Andreas. Marken reducerades till 1/4 mantal 1860. Makarna Per och Karin flyttar in på ett undantag 1863 och barnen Johannes, Andreas och Lotta bor kvar på 1/4 mantal. Lotta dör 1879 och då flyttar pigan Maria Kristina Andreasdotter född 1852 till bröderna. Hon bor kvar där till sin död 1931 och har då troligen fått ärva ovan nämnda undantag."
Huset stod sedan öde och det ryktas att ungdomar gick dit och spelade kort. Marken kom senare i Sigurd Johansson, Uspastorps ägo.

After contact with a representative of Uspastorps website who lives next door, I got the following information:
This stone building is a root cellar and there is a common misconception that it was a home. On the other side of the road as seen from earth cellar there is a small grove of trees, which are the remains of the foundations for residential building. It is said to have been a barn-like building where the animals lived in one end of the house and so we lived in the other. The book - a cottage in Starrkärr-Kilanda parishes that:
"Per Larsson, born in 1798, wife Karin Andersdotter born 1797th kids named Lotta, Bob, John, Lars, Anna Maria (born 1837) and Andrew. The ground was reduced to 1/4 of a common size called "mantal". The couple Per and Karin move into an exception in 1863 and the children John, Andrew and Lotta lives at quarter "mantal". Lotta death in 1879 and then moving maid Maria Christina Andreas daughter born in 1852 to the brothers. She was still living there until his death in 1931 and has since likely inherited the above mentioned exception. "
The house was then deserted and it is rumored that young people went and played cards. The land was later in Sigurd Johansson Uspastorps possession.

For this photo, I had the model sit down because when he was standing the background was to distracting. Also, I positioned the camera so that his back is towards the shadows, and his face towards the light. By shooting with soft side light, it allowed for catchlights in his eyes, but without a hard transition between the light and shadows. This provided a smoother transition between the side of his face into the shadows.
Aaron Tippin began performing for the troops 23 years ago on Bob Hope's 1990 USO Desert Storm Tour. And, showed no sign of slowing down as he entertained a packed house at Carey Fitness Center on Camp Casey Oct. 23.

For lunch I had a steak and ale pie, served with mash, taken alongside a Guinness, extra cold - 2 degrees centigrade colder, the bartender explained. It went down well, like all the other delicious meals I've had in England; and no doubt by now I have grown accustomed to inebriation at half past two. Besides, Liverpool were playing inspired football against Blackburn; and my lunch was complete.

For week 2's theme: Building.
As my shot for the week, this is a building (literally), but it's also my first time using Lightroom. I've been processing my photos with Snapseed for a long time, but I really want to have more control over what I'm doing and have the processing be repeatable (which it totally isn't on Snapseed). So this is the start of building (figuratively) a new skill.
