Today I have a story in the local paper about the biggest AC/DC fan in the county. He has a huge collection of merchandise, including two official guitars and one he had custom built to look exactly like Angus Young's most famous guitar.

I love people who commit and go all the way!

For the first time in 25 years, staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are making preparations for the highly anticipated birth of an endangered Bornean orangutan. With a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP), the 19-year-old parents to be, female Batang and male Kyle, bred in January. On Feb. 2, a common human pregnancy test confirmed that Batang had successfully conceived. Earlier today, the Zoo announced Batang’s pregnancy through a broadcast via Facebook Live of her ultrasound; it will continue to provide weekly updates on Batang through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #OrangutanStory.

Zoo veterinarians have conducted bi-weekly ultrasounds since Feb. 2 and are encouraged that the ultrasounds have shown fetal growth and development, heightening hopes that Batang will give birth for the first time. They are cautiously optimistic that she will deliver a healthy baby around mid-September. However, just like any animal pregnancy, there is a possibility that miscarriage, stillbirth or a complication could occur.

“All of our perseverance and planning paid off when we confirmed Batang’s pregnancy,” said Dr. Meredith Bastian, curator of primates and member of the Orangutan SSP Steering Committee. “Watching her fetus develop over the past few months has been incredibly exciting, and we’re making every effort to ensure our efforts come to fruition.”

For the past three years, keepers have been acclimating Batang to the experiences of motherhood and training her to care for an infant. Building upon behaviors Batang has learned through routine training sessions, keepers presented her with a plush, bean-shaped pillow and an orangutan stuffed animal to simulate a baby. Keepers trained her to hold the “fake” baby upright, carry it around the enclosure and return the pillow baby to keepers through a specially designed “baby box” when asked. Should animal care staff need to evaluate a real orangutan baby’s health, this training would help staff retrieve the infant in a way that is safe and not stressful for the animals. Batang has also been trained to use a breast pump for milk collection in the event she is unable to successfully nurse.

“Training increases the likelihood that orangutan mothers will care for their infants,” said Becky Malinsky, assistant curator of primates. “This training is especially important for a first time mother, like Batang. It is our goal for the infant to be raised by her mother, learning how to be an orangutan from Batang and the other orangutans at the zoo.”

In the event that Batang is unable or unwilling to care for her infant, keepers are training females Bonnie and Iris to act as surrogate mothers. They receive similar training to Batang, but with a slight twist: keepers ask them to bring the pillow baby and present it to the keepers for bottle feedings. Batang is also trained to present the infant for bottle feedings if she is unable to nurse. As a last resort, keepers will prepare a nursery in the event it is necessary for them to hand-raise the baby with the goal of returning the infant to its mother or surrogate as soon as possible.

Native to Indonesia, orangutans live in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. For the past seven decades, humans have cleared land that was originally orangutan territory in order to meet the growing demand for palm oil products, fast-growing pulp wood and food crops leaving orangutans in competition with one another for space, food and mates. Scientists estimate that in the past 75 years, the number of wild orangutans has decreased by 80 percent. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Bornean orangutan as endangered and the Sumatran orangutan as critically endangered.

Visitors can see the Zoo’s six orangutans daily at the Great Ape House and the Think Tank. At the Great Ape House, visitors can meet a great ape keeper to learn about the fascinating world of apes at 11:30 a.m. daily. At Think Tank, staff and interpretive volunteers perform daily demonstrations and lead discussions on research in cognitive science, highlighting current and ongoing Zoo studies at 1:30 p.m. Visitors can also see the orangutans traveling on the O-Line on warm-weather days in the late morning and early afternoon.

For a Chef who's leaving 'The Swan Hotel' were he works. This Hotel is lovely and really seem to look after there staff. It's the 3rd cake I've done for them now, all for their staff to enjoy. This man is a keen marathon runner and Arsenal supporter. I tried to create the illusion of the path ahead going off into the distance, with the signpost pointing to 'Pastures New'. With his chef clothes packed into his bag and his running kit on, he's reached a mile stone. The actual cake is an hexagonal cake, carved into a wonky cake to help essentuate the perspective illusion (Hopefully, lol).

Victorian Alpine Huts survey, for Parks Victoria 1994-5.

In 1865, E George Treasure married Emily Langford and by the early 1870s had moved to Victoria to work at a Seymour vineyard. George Treasure junior had been born to the family at Wangaratta, in 1873, and the next two children at Wandiligong, in 1875 and 1877, as a mark of their gradual progress towards the Dargo area. Treasure worked on reef mining at Wandiligong, doing underground work as he had done in New South Wales. He moved to another mine, the Alpine, for a healthier working environment, in 1877 { Stapleton: 28-}. In 1878, E George Treasure (then described as a Harrietville miner), selected land at Kings Spur on the Dargo High Plains{ Stephenson: 107-}. The family (3 boys, one girl) made an arduous journey on horseback via Mt Freezeout and the Lankey's Plain, to a bark roof two-room log hut built on the High Plains near Kings Spur on the eastern edge of Gow's Plains, by George and his mining associate, Harry Stitt in late 1877. The hut had a verandah at the entry, a slab chimney `stoned up' to 7-8 feet high, two modified armchairs and bush furniture made on the spot. This served as the residence for a small dairy farm which provided for the miners who crossed to the Grant and Crooked River goldfields{ Stephenson}. The house became a licensed hotel and a store was added. Three miles south there was also Gow's hotel, the `half-way house'. Cessation of mining around 1900 meant the store was wound down. George and Emily purchased a 700 acre property at Lindenow (Grassvale) while their son Harry remained at King's Spur. George senior died at Lindenow of cancer in 1901, aged 58 { Stapleton: 116}. Emily then arranged the gradual transfer of the High Plains holdings to her sons who managed the properties and stock in the interim. Emily died in 1939, aged 90. Harry L Treasure (George's son) selected the 200 acre property Castleburn (45 miles distant on the Stratford side of Dargo, later enlarged to 3000 acres), c1904, to serve summer grazing. This was after his marriage in 1903 to local girl, Clare Gamel. About the same time he and his father-in-law built a new shingle and paling house at Mayford, east of the King's Spur property, as a winter base. From 1907 Harry's brothers sold him their shares and eventually departed north. Gamel built Harry another house, Rockalpine, in 1910 - located further to the south on the Dargo Road. The family spent the winter at the house in c1912 after the house at Mayford was burnt, leaving only some old huts. Harry, Clare and family developed their High Plains holdings in the inter-war period, including a near 100,000 acre grazing lease, George's 600 acre selection, a fenced freehold at Riley's Creek to spell the cattle on their way to the mountains in summer, and `a sheltered saddle near Mt Ewan…another substantial hut and set of bush yards capable of holding large mobs' { Stapleton: 159}. The 1939 fires meant losses for the family as for many others in the region but they saved the homestead complex, losing 700 stock, fences, and several huts and yards. The family worked hard to replace them, splitting some 4000 snow gum posts in the following season along with woolly but rails for yards and gates but wire and snow gum droppers replaced the old logs in the fences. Harry and his three sons (Don, Jack & Jim) rebuilt the Mt Ewan hut and yards as a `magnificent new log hut' { Stapleton: 214}. The paling hut beside the 1939 log hut was reputedly built for Freda Treasure (Harry & Claire's daughter) as her bedroom in about 1945- presumably allowing the men to sleep in the 1939 log hut { Kosciuszko Huts Association website 2004}. However a picture of Freda at Mt Ewan (in her 20s-30s?) has her seated on her bunk, next to her saddle, knitting in the log hut. Educated at MLC in the 1930s, Freda married Wally Ryder, from another pioneering cattle family, in 1957. She shifted to Tawonga as a result but maintained a keen interest in the High Plains along with her brothers{ Stapleton: 219}. Harry gave her a paddock at Castleburn, known as Bryce's and she became known by local scribes as `Maid of the Mountains' or `Cowgirl of the Alps'}. Harry gave her a 28,000 bush grazing block to work after 1939, known as Jones' where she used an existing hut and yards. She lived there through winter with her cattle, visited occasionally by her mother. Freda died in 1988, one year after Wally { Stapleton: 267-}. Harry Treasure served as an Avon Shire councillor 1918-1949, often riding to the council meetings at Stratford. Harry made many submissions to government inquiries concerning the causes of the 1939 fires and alpine grazing. He died at Rockalpine in 1961{ Stephenson}. As a postscript, Sydney (Jack) Treasure (son of Harry) sought a selection on the High Plains in the 1940s but met with government opposition{ HO15895}. Some 20 years later the Treasures tried again stating that they had added many improvements to their grazing block (4A) and desired some freehold security. Their father and grandfather had held it for some 80 years{ HO15895}. The improvements on the adjoining freehold which served the grazing lease then included four residences (Harry's sons), sheds, fences, stockyards (CAs 2,2A,4,5){ HO15895 }. The department granted a seven year lease instead, noting the good management of the property.

I took many photos of this sublime orchid on the paradise island of Öland. I waited for the sun to come out from the clouds since the sun ray gave this amazing light on the petals. Day Eighteen .. having a look around the Riverside Museum in Glasgow before heading south to England this afternoon.

Glenlee is a steel-hulled three-masted barque, built in 1896 for Glasgow owners, trading as a cargo ship. From 1922 she was a sail training ship in the Spanish Navy. She is now a museum ship at the Riverside Museum on Pointhouse Quay, Glasgow, known as The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour.

After more than 47 years of service as a sail and later on as a stationary training ship she was first laid up in A Graña, Ferrol, her Spanish port of registry. In 1981 the underwater hull was re-plated at the drydock in Ferrol. Later Galatea was completely de-rigged down to a hulk (all yards with standing and running rigging and even the masts removed) and was towed to Seville to be used as a floating museum, but left forgotten. Some sources[which?] even reported that the ship was sunk in the harbour by removing her bronze sea cock valve, but salvaged later by the Spanish Navy.

In any case, the ship was in such poor condition that it was eventually decided to scrap her. In 1990 a British naval architect (Dr. Sir John Brown, 1901-2000) discovered the ship and in 1993 she was rescued from being scrapped and subsequently bought by the Clyde Maritime Trust at auction for ₧5000,000 or £40,000. After making the hull seaworthy (all openings on deck were closed and the flying bridge spanning the poop deck during her service in Spain and the attached flying jibboom were removed) the ship was returned to Glasgow months later in tow from Seville.

Except for the hull a new ship had to be rebuilt. All the changes made to the ship by the Spanish and previous owners had to be removed, such as all the cabins built for the trainees and a lot of scrap iron ballast in the frames of the holds. First of all she was given back her original name, Glenlee, by the Lord Provost of Glasgow on 6 July 1993 when the ship arrived in Glasgow for the first time since her launch in 1896 at her old and new port of registry - Glasgow Harbour. Glenlee is now recognised as part of the National Historic Fleet.

In late 1966, Ford unveiled the MkII Cortina, just four years after the original and highly successful MkI with a fresh squared-off look courtesy of Ford UK’s chief stylist Roy Haynes. A fraction wider and shorter than the MkI it replaced, it incorporated numerous improvements such as a tighter turning circle, more compliant suspension and most importantly, a lot more interior space.

A new five-bearing 1.300 cc engine and carry-over 1.500 cc unit were offered, capacity increasing further to 1.599 cc on the larger unit in August ’67 along with new crossflow heads for both. New models were badged 1300 or 1600 and were available as two- and four-door saloons in base, Deluxe and Super trim levels and not long much later, the roomy estate version joined the price list.

Produced in 1970, this MkII 1300 base spec estate is now a rare sight and will no doubt draw admiration and intrigue in equal dose wherever its taken. This four-owner car has formed part of a large private collection for many years and retains its delightfully original and simple interior featuring black leatherette seats. The history file contains nine old Mot certificates and a tax disc from 2013.

We are led to believe that it this one has been fitted with the more powerful 1.600 cc unit at some time in the past, although we ask that you make your own mind up as to what capacity engine is actually fitted.

It was last MOT’d in June 2012, at which time the recorded mileage was 7.652 miles which we can only assume to be 107.652. Judging by the Mot history the car was in regular, albeit limited use until its last Mot. Given that it has not been used for at least five or six years, we have not attempted to start it and would advise a service and thorough check-over before enjoying this classic estate life through the summer show season.

Enthusiasts from other countries never fully understand why we Brits get so excited about old Fords from this era, but they are economical, cheap to run and pleasant to drive, this lovely original Cortina just needs some regular exercise to keep it fit and healthy – don’t we all.

The tangible phenomena we scrutinize with our reason, the sacred and indemonstrable we overhear with the sense of the ineffable. The force that inspires readiness for self-sacrifice, the thoughts that breed humility within and beyond the mind, are not identical with the logician’s craftsmanship. The purity of which we never cease to dream, the untold things we insatiably love, the vision of the good for which we either die or perish alive—no reason can bound. It is the ineffable from which we draw the taste of the sacred, the joy of the imperishable.

From night skies dressed in clouds

Morning came, your taste in my mouth

I like the way that your hair falls down in your eyes

And you blush when you smile

When sleep combs your side then far away flies

I love the way that you stare when the sleep fills your eyes

So yesterday has gone

Who knows, tomorrow may bring all we'll desire

Tomorrow brings the sun

Kiss the world with fingers crossed

I've kissed the world with fingers crossed

I've been praised

I've been cursed

I've been blamed

And I've won

And I've lost

On waves that fill your heart

The future glides

I hope the serpents in the tide

Are all gone

What's done is done

A song for no one's in my hand

A song they'll never understand

Til I have gone

And tomorrow brings the sun

Good Thursday Afternoon,

Time for my weekly batch of photos.

Last Friday, my mom, the twins, and I jumped in the car and took off for Lake Almanor.

Our goals:

1) Have a fun summer excursion

2) Give Chelsey a few days of peace and quiet

We succeeded on both fronts.

The boys earned their 'road tripper badges' with another outstanding performance in the car. Nana played the role of iPad, successfully entertaining the boys for a good seven hours out of the Bay Area, up I5, through the foothills, and into the Sierras. Nana has skills.

The most eventful portion of our trip came on Highway 36 just west of Payne's Creek. A wildfire fire reached the highway just before we did. Stopped by CHP, I jumped out to snap some photos of the fire fight. There were 4 planes, 1 helicopter, and dozens of CalFire personnel working in remarkable unison. Most of the visible action was in the air. The spotter planes would swoop in, and scout for the bigger DC-7 bomber that followed with the flame retardant. I felt like such a tourist when I turned to a guy next to me and asked if he had any info on when they might re-open the road. Through crooked teeth, and a funky, graying, goatee he said that he wasn't sure, but that he hoped they stopped the fire soon enough to keep his place up the ridge from burning down. He never took his eyes off the 'show' as we spoke. "Go guys, Go!" he said as the bomber dropped another red payload below his house. I wished him luck and walked back to the car. My 30 minute inconvenience paled in comparison to what that guy was facing.

Today, it felt pretty good to read that only one, non-residential, structure was lost in the 100 acre "36 Fire". CalFire's hard work saved that guy's house, and everything inside it. Way to go guys.

After a quick stop in Chester, we arrived at Aunty Tuna's house. The Imai clan arrived not long thereafter.

First night in camp. Catchup conversations in full-swing. Amazing Almanor sunset. All's right in the world.

Sunday morning opened with a bike ride. Yuji lead the way down Peninsula Drive and back up Lassen View. County Sheriff pulled the boys over. Said they were going a bit fast. Their fine was a firm handshake and a smile.

Monday, we went to "The Hole" on the Feather River. I'm happy to report that the jumping rocks are still high, the water is still very cold, and the Orange Crush tastes just as sweet.

Tuesday, we rented a pontoon boat and cruised the lake. We raced birds, saw an island, contemplated a snow-less Mount Lassen, and lunched in Prattville. On the way home, we anchored in a cove. Yuji, Will, & Rob took turns jumping off the boat into the lake. Life jackets were a revelation. All the benefits of floating, none of the work. Out, and back, the boys took turns captaining the ship. Our only close call came when this old man tried to get the boat back into dock. Took a few tries, but we got it done without any insurance claims or major injuries.

Amidst all the fun, Nana watched the boys so I could sneak out fishing with Uncle Bruce and Bill Elliott. Fish per hour were low. Satisfaction quotient was off the charts. Being in those mountains, on the Feather River, is definitely is my happy place.

The photo of the photo was taken on the steps of the Elliott cabin outside Chester. My mom's dad, Papa, is in the front row on the right. The photo had to be taken 60 years ago. I smile every time I it.

Growing up, I always looked forward to our two-week vacations to Almanor. I loved the time spent fishing, lounging, and bonding with my family. Especially my cousins.

Watching my kids, the 4th generation of our family, build their own memories at the lake is pretty awesome.

We have heritage there.

Big thanks to Aunty Tuna and Coach for hosting this year's adventure.

Have a great weekend!

Large Diorama: Combined Arms

After a typical daily patrol, the mechanized platoon returns to base along the same route the unit has taken numerous times. The long road back to base is bordered on both sides by opium poppy fields and native farmers.

After passing one of the unsuspecting farm houses the American unit is attacked from a small building located at the 5 o’clock position of the Bradley Fighting vehicle. The U.S. forces have walked into a carefully and preciously planned ambush.

According to typical U.S. Army protocol, the Bradley and the 6 infantry soldiers immediately begin to engage the enemy threat. The Bradley turret quickly turns and begins to level the building where the attack began with its 25 mm M242 Chain Gun. The six soldiers in the rear of the vehicle quickly exit the Bradley and seek protective cover behind the steel reinforced aluminum armor. In the first few seconds of the firefight one American soldier goes down and helped to the cover behind the Bradley.

Multiple enemy forces pour from within the neighboring buildings, and the friendlies quickly realize they are greatly outnumbered. Realizing the unit is in grave danger, the commander calls to higher for air support. Luckily, there is a new UAV, the Seeker, in the air only 2 minutes from their location.

Unknown to the patrol, the leader of the enemy forces had planned to initiate the attack at a precise and exact time, which would call for the attack to begin when the American armored vehicle would be right on top of a buried IED (Improvised Explosive Device). The enemy commander’s plan has worked so far and he is about to detonate the IED with a cellular phone while hidden in the perceived safety of the larger building.

The American forces were ambushed with superior numbers and the enemy is about to spring the final trap that would spell doom for the entire unit. . . . . . . . . . . . .

However, thanks to the close coordination between land and air forces, the adept American commander is able to save his men from death by calling in a local UAV to level the area and eliminate the IED threat hidden within.

Welcome 2011!

This is Leo's first shot for the 52 Weeks for Dogs group.

Just like his sisters 12 Months for Dogs first shot of the year, I wanted to showcase his new pretty purple Dog Tag.

It's incredibly hard to get a nice shot of the pups with the tag facing the right way... So I had to cheat with this one and photoshop the tag so it's facing the camera... Naughty me...

I just love the way he's looking straight at the camera (or me). He's such a goofy little man!

Leo is a Blue Great Dane, almost 11 months old.

Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA..Children pose for photograph inside the Anganwadi centre. .The One Full Meal is a state government programme that aims at improving the nutrient intake of pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers and reducing the prevalence and severity of maternal anemia. The programme reaches over 350,000 pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers across some 26,000 anganwadi centres (about 30 per cent of ICDS projects in state) located in villages where malnutrition rates are high. Stadte für das Leben - Städte gegen die Todesstrafe / Cities for Life - Cities Against the Death Penalty

On the Cities for Life Day, November 30, cities around the world celebrate the first abolition of the death penalty by a European state, decreed by Peter Leopold Joseph of Habsburg-Lorraine in 1786 for his Grand Duchy of Tuscany. On this occasion the participating cities show their commitment for life and against the death penalty.

On this day, participating cities illuminate a symbolic monument (here the Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg), such as the Atomium in Brussels, the Colosseum in Rome and the Plaza de Santa Ana in Madrid. Participating cities in 2009 include more than 60 capitals worldwide, and over 1,200 cities and towns around the world, such as Rome, Brussels, Madrid, Ottawa, Mexico City, Berlin, Barcelona, Florence, Venice, Buenos Aires, Austin, Dallas, Antwerp, Vienna, Naples, Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Reggio Emilia, Bogotá, Santiago de Chile.

By this symbolic action, these cities demand a stay of all executions worldwide. This initiative is promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and supported by the main international human rights organizations, gathered in the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty (Amnesty International, Ensemble contre la Peine de Mort, International Penal Reform, FIACAT).

I really had to go downtown.

Go downtown and hang around.

Was not prepared for what I found.

A baby bird was lyin' on the ground.

Lying there in front of my feet.

Dying there right next to the street.

I picked it up and felt it's heat.

I tried to wake her up but she wanted to sleep.

I'm trying, and I'm trying, and I'm trying

But I can't get away from the thought.

It's dying, it's dying, it's dying,

And it's something that I couldn't stop.

You're lying, you're lying, if you say

It's gonna make it 'cos I know that it's not.

Hanging on a telephone line.

Witnessing a million crimes.

I've been alone all this time.

I'd call someone but I don't have a dime.

I don't care for boys or girls.

I'd rather hang around with the birds.

Humans only wreck the world.

They'd kill your whole family for a string of pearls.

I'm trying, and I'm trying, and I'm trying

But I can't get away from the thought.

We're dying, we're dying, we're dying.

Our insides are starting to rot.

You're lying, you're lying, if you say

We're okay, 'cos maybe we're not.

If I had wings I'd try to fly.

But they don't make it harder to die.

You can take it up to the sky.

But no one ever stays that high.

High... high

I'm trying, and I'm trying, and I'm trying

But I can't get away from the thought.

I'm dying, I'm dying.

I already gave away all that I've got.

I'm lying, I'm lying, if I say

That I'm cool 'cos really I'm not.
