3rd Annual DEC Picnic on Sun, August 12th = 36 Huge Boxes of Supplies for 5 PBC Schools! 750 Dems attend barbecue event at John Prince Park
A great time was had by all -- and Belle Glade, Glades View, Lincoln & Pleasant City Elementary Schools, plus the Head Start program of Boynton Beach, each received six huge waist-high boxes filled to the brim with vitally needed classroom school supplies, thanks to the DEC's Third Annual Picnic to Benefit PBC Schoolchildren at John Prince Park on Sunday, August 12th, 2007.
Approximately 750 Democrats braved the August heat for a fun afternoon to benefit area schools, plus meet and greet the many elected officials and candidates who came out to support the day. Adult attendees enjoyed great cookout fare and an afternoon of schmoozing with fellow Dems, while kids had fun with the bounce house, face painting, and demonstrations from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office Fingerprint, Canine & Mounted units.
Many elected officials who joined the festivities included State Sen. Dave Aronberg; State Reps. Susan Bucher, Richard Machek, Kelly Skidmore & Shelly Vana; Supervisor of Elections Dr. Arthur Anderson, Clerk & Comptroller Sharon Bock; Sheriff Ric Bradshaw; County Comm. Addie Greene; WPB Mayor Lois Frankel; Wellington Vice Mayor Bob Margolis; Belle Glade City Comm. Ray Sanchez; PBC School Board Member Paulette Burdick; and Port Commissioner Dr. Jean Enright. Many candidates running for state house seats and other local offices also mixed and mingled with the appreciative crowd.
Special thanks to the dedicated members of the Precinct Coordinating, Young Democrats, and VOICE Committees who volunteered as Event Staff. Appreciation also goes to Sheriff Ric Bradshaw who supported the event with a large donation of back-to-school supplies from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office, as well as to Murray Kalish & the United South County Democratic Club, and to the United Federation of Teachers for their respective generous contributions of supplies. Thanks also to Lesley Shriberg, Aide to Sheriff Bradshaw for her assistance; to the great Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies who provided us with traffic control; and to Deputy Debra Hill who coordinated the "guest appearances" of Clue, one of the great dogs from the PBSO Canine Unit and Max, one of the best members of the PBSO Mounted Unit, along with their great Sgts. Deputy Hill worked alongside Asst Volunteer Coordinator Adele Abbot and the dedicated volunteers who manned the information and Fingerprint Kit table. Kudos to all!
The entire chicken, hamburger and hot dog barbecue was underwritten by donations to the party. Thanks to the generosity of all Dems who supported the event, 36 large cardboard boxes were filled with crayons, pens and pencils, paper, notepads, glue, books, backpacks, calculators and many other crucially needed classroom items which will be put to immediate use by PBC schoolchildren in our five designated schools.
Machele Martin, a special-needs counselor at Belle Glade Elementary School, who accepted the donations on behalf of her school, stressed that the donation of a few dollars can mean a great deal to students whose families cannot afford to provide them with even basic school supplies. Sometimes, she said, a new notebook or backpack is all it takes to change a child's attitude about school. "If your basic needs aren't met, it's real easy for your motivation in school to be low," Martin said. "Sometimes it's the simplest, smallest things that can boost a student's self-esteem."
Julia Zecca, a bilingual guidance counselor at Belle Glade, said she spends as much as $2,500 of her own money every year to outfit students and her classroom with basic supplies. Zecca, a teacher since 1992, said some years she has spent twice that amount. "A lot of parents are struggling to pay the bills and make ends meet, so their children are sometimes ill prepared for school," Zecca said. "That can have a real negative effect on a child beginning to learn."
Thanks to all PBC Democrats who helped prove that Democrats support education!
Contributions still accepted for supplemental school supplies. If you were unable to attend the picnic but would like to contribute, it's not too late! Donations are still being accepted towards a supplemental contribution for supplies for our schools. To make a donation, send your check to the DEC Office, ATTN: SCHOOL SUPPLIES, 6266 S. Congress Ave, Suite L11, Lantana, FL 33462 -- be sure to note "School Supplies" on the Memo line.

Pyongyang is the capital of the DPRK and the centre of politics, the economy and culture.
As the cradle of the Taedonggang Culture, it has over 5 000-year-long history since Tangun, founder king, established Ancient Korea and set Pyongyang as its capital.
In spring Moran Hill, a "garden of the capital," is full of flowers and the picturesque Taedong River flows through the city centre. So Pyongyang is called a city in a park. Such surroundings make Pyo according to north korean guides. Pyongyang the "World Best Beauty".

The Ski for Women is a big fundraising event with the proceeds going to agencies that specialize in dealing with abuse and violence against women and children.
The ski is part fun and part competition with a lot of cool costumes; there was an incredible turnout considering how cold and windy it was. I was there for a little over two hours and could barely feel my toes and fingers despite being prepared for the cold - but it was definitely worth it.
Good fun for good causes - Alaskan women do rock!

Description: Letter from Winifred Holt Mather to Edward E. Allen written on May 22, 1924, page 1 of 2. Typed on American Committee for Men Blinded in Battle letterhead.
Full text: The Committee for Men Blinded in Battle
Lighthouse No. 3
May 22, 1924
Dear Mr. Allen:
I have often wondered if the parent of a book has any right to want its offspring to live and to call in a Doctor to save its life. I had not yet decided this question for myself when I received a letter this morning from Helen Keller in which she says: "I loved the story of Francoise. I wish it could be put into Braille. I know the blind would appreciate it. ----the book seems to me a beautiful record of your beneficent work for the blind. I admire immensely your high courage and amazing resourcefulness."
This statement by the Arch Priestess of the blind and what other blind people have said to me of the help it has been to them, and what it has done for seeing people, acting as a middleman to put them in sympathetic touch with the blind, has decided me.
Please read the enclosed copies of extracts from my publishers' letters and see if you would care for the plates of "A Beacon for the Blind" and for "The Light Which Cannot Fail." If so, I shall gladly let you have them, together with all rights of printing them.
I know that "The Beacon for the Blind" has a message and that it did not have a chance. It made its debut in England and Sir Arthur Pearson undertook its publicity. He then joined the late Mr. Kessler's Committee and did what he could to remove the author and whatever she was responsible for from the map. "The Light Which Cannot Fail" I am informed was the victim of paid sabotage. Certainly one editorial in the Journal looked as if it must have been paid for. It was so full of inexorable animus and rudeness that it looked as if it were written to provoke an answer from the author and to begin the mud-throwing contest which for so many years our non-friends have tried for.
I should be very glad to have you use any of my publications for Braille or to print the little text book separately or the stories separately, as Helen Keller suggests that she wishes could be done for Francois.

Here the second dress set I made for John. I let me inspired by a picture he send to me.
To adorn this dress, I made a little fur collar with a removable pink bow.
This dress is based on a 3D trim of white roses applied. I created a new pattern to make it. I myself used and applied a tiny trim for a ruffled effect on the rest of the dress. The sleeves are extended by a lace with embroidered roses. The waist is high and tightened with a white ribbon and a small lace underlines the neckline. The dress is fully lined.
This dress is worn by my Merry Skier Blythe doll.

We had a trip to Prague in January – for Jayne’s birthday - we don’t buy Christmas or birthday presents, we travel instead. We left snowy England for a very, very dull and grey Czech Republic. Yet again I was on a photographic downer looking at the weather forecast, grey is the colour that haunts me. Fortunately it was dull grey and not burnt highlight inducing bright grey. With the grey sky acting like a big diffuser I was going to have deep shadow and contrast to deal with. We had three very short spells of broken cloud which gave us a bit of sun and colour, which I managed to more or less anticipate so we managed to be in decent locations every time – generally somewhere high.
We had been upgraded to a five star hotel, apparently our original choice was flooded. We got compensation and five star hotel upgrade– a first for me. The Art Nouveau Palace has a beautiful interior, with beautiful rooms, the breakfast room was fantastic, as was the breakfast it has to be said. We were able to have an early breakfast so were out on foot just after eight. It was very cold – and dull! We spent the whole week well wrapped up. It drizzled for a day, but never really wet us, it snowed for a day, again we didn’t get wet and the snow didn’t settle. We walked 65 mile, spending plenty of time checking buildings and their interiors out – and coffee shop and bar interiors it has to be said. Although it was dull and sometimes wet I decided that the Camera was staying in my hands for the whole trip. Whenever I put it in my backpack for one reason or another I regret it.
Again, I didn’t look at any photographs of Prague before we got there, I like to just walk and discover, with the DK guidebook in my pocket (which is full of photos it has to be said). We like to get off the beaten track and see the grittier side of the places we visit – within reason! Prague has an incredible tram network, over 1000 trams – with many of them Tatra Eastern Bloc machines. The system seems chaotic but in reality it is incredible with one of the largest networks and highest usages in the world. The trams and cars frequently share the same road space with very little in the way of drama, none of the inexplicable and pathetic constant horn blowing one finds in many countries. Once it became apparent that buildings with a grey blanket as a background were going to be a bit un-inspirational I decided that the trams would be a good focal point instead. Where I have photographed one of the older trams against a background without clues it is easy to imagine that the photos were taken fifty years ago.
The train network also provided photo opportunities. The rolling stock ranges from old Eastern Bloc to very modern double decker’s and pendolinos. There are three stations although we visited the main station and Smichov. The main station interior is art deco and has been renovated by a private company. The exterior and the platforms are very rundown with a grim eastern bloc 1950’s feel –but it works! We discovered to our amusement that we could just walk across multiple lines, no health and safety, just keep your eyes open and don’t walk under a train – you’ll make a mess. Smichov station was grim, it didn’t help that it snowed all day and was grey and bitter. We felt like we were in a 50’s film set in Russia, broken concrete platforms and dereliction. With both stations there was another world underneath them. The underground Metro is running seamlessly and efficiently away beneath your feet. I didn’t have any problems taking photos anywhere but I was very open and obviously a tourist, I didn’t act covertly or suspiciously. There was only one occasion I was stopped and that was in a shopping centre – full of CCTV cameras filming everyone else!
We discovered old and beautiful- and very large- shopping centres hidden away in quite a few places. Brass framed windows and doors, shops thriving, there was a massive camera shop with thousands of second hand cameras, too much to look at. Many of the landmark buildings prevent photography, some make a small charge, some encourage it, the DK guide book gives a good indication regarding camera use. Nothing stops many people though, they just shoot away regardless, usually wanting a picture that includes their self. Prague is surrounded by low hills and has a fair few towers that you can pay a few pounds to go up, so viewpoints are plentiful. I think we visited most of them. I read about the Zizkov Tower, which looks like a Soviet rocket on the horizon and we headed straight for it - after crossing the rail lines! Set in a quiet residential area, there wasn’t a soul about. Two beautiful girls on reception and we parted with a few pounds, into the lift and were on the observation deck with no one else up there. There are fantastic views over the city, but! It is through two layers of not very clean glass so you go for the view rather than sharp panoramas. Still a fascinating place, with a nice café bar and very clean toilets – there are toilets everywhere, usually manned with a fee. Places are well staffed compared with home were three students are supposed to run a 20 screen multiplex cinema.
Graffiti was prominent, no matter how grand the monument, some moron would have daubed it. How do they get away with it in a 24 hour city centre with a strong police presence? The place is very clean, constantly being swept. What did surprise me, was that many buildings, that looked grand and built of stone, from a distance, were actually rendered with very low quality brickwork concealed. When restored the building look very impressive, others are missing the outer render from ground level to a fair height.
I need to cut this short really, I like to put a background story to the photos and although it would be better to individualise it to a specific photo or group of photos I don’t have the time to do that. I do try to give specific detail in the title bar after I have uploaded, this is time consuming enough although I’m pretty proficient at it by now. There are many things I would like to write that should be of interest to anyone thinking of going to Prague but I’ll have to let the pictures do the talking. As usual I am unlikely to be selective enough with my uploads, I’m not very good at leaving photos out so I just upload and be damned.
...who, at 91, has recently had to leave her home. This picture was taken in the field in front of her house, where she enjoyed the wildflowers for over seven decades.

1. In first grade I was very introverted. In fact, I was nearly held back in Kindergarten for social reasons.
2. In second grade my math homework was rarely finished and when it was, it was terribly messy. My teacher knew I could do it. She figured I was bored, so she gave me a fourth grade math book that I could work in, but only if my regular work was complete and neat.
3. In third grade my teacher left the profession at Christmas to have a baby. She was replaced by a student-teacher we had in the first half of the year.
4. In fourth grade I began to get over my fear of weather and began to love weather thanks to a unit studying the subject.
5. In fifth grade I becan to play the trumpet, which I still play today (29 years later).
6. In sixth grade my teacher was in the first year of her career. She is the only teacher of mine still in the profession.
7. In seventh grade I first had my mom as a teacher. She tought seventh and eighth grade geography. She was the best and toughest teacher I ever had.
8. In eighth grade I had considerably conquered my introvertedness. I participated in the state solo and ensemble contest taking 3 firsts (solo trumpet, solo voice, voice sextet) and 1 second (trumpet duet).
9. In ninth grade I was the only freshman in the school's concert choir.
10. In tenth grade I marched on the field of Northwestern University during halftime of the Class 5A state football game, which we lost.
11. In eleventh grade I played Teen Angel in Grease. Obviously, I was the comic relief.
12. In twelfth grade I played Linus Van Pelt in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. To this day, it is the greatest time I have had on stage.
13. In my freshman year of college I was a member of the Eastern Illinois University Panther Marching Band, which marched at Soldier Field in Chicago during the halftime of a Bears game.

For weeks I’ve been trying to think of some comforting words to write to the family of Horst (*hb19) who passed away and left flickr world mourning for an incredible nice and kind man – someone I would have loved to meet in person.
It’s Friday and I have a day off… sitting on my balcony I thought “Horst would have sent us Friday-flowers…” And then I looked into the sun and thought “this is how he saw the world – bright and wonderful”. This is for you, Horst… and for your family. We won’t forget you - rest in peace.

Scotland For Ever.
Lady Elizabeth Butler (1846-1933).
Oil on canvas, 1881.
Named after a battle cry, 'Scotland for Ever!', this is one of the most popular paintings created by Lady Elizabeth Butler, depicting the charge of the Royal North British Dragoons (The Scots Greys) at the Battle of Waterloo. The popularity of 'Scotland Forever' became even more apparent during the First World War when both the British and the Germans used the image for propaganda purposes.
From 1862 Lady Elizabeth Butler began her studies of art in Italy, then in 1866 she went to South Kensington, London where she enrolled at the Female School of Art. Moving to Florence in 1869 where she studied under Giuseppe Bellucci and attended the Accademia di Belle Arti. She often signed her works as Mimi Thompson.
Famous for her paintings of battle scenes, Lady Elizabeth Butler was a remarkable artist, being one of only a few 19th century women to acquire fame for their historic paintings. Prior to her fame as a battle scene artists she had focussed on religious subjects, but in 1870 she was inspired by the works of Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier and Edouard Detaille, from then on she changed her focus to depicting heroic actions of soldiers of the ranks. In her 1922 autobiography she wrote about her military paintings: "I never painted for the glory of war, but to portray its pathos and heroism."
Born at Villa Claremont in Lausanne, Switzerland, her other works include the Crimean War and the Battle of Waterloo, The Roll Call (purchased by Queen Victoria) and The Defence of Rorke's Drift.
Her marriage to the distinguished British Army Lieutenant-General Sir William Francis Butler in 1877 resulted in six children, and a new era in her life as she travelled the British Empire. During their empire travels both she and her husband started to believe that the empire rulers of Britain and Europe may not provide the most positive experience for those whose land they ruled over. Even so, she continued to paint scenes showing the valour of the ordinary British soldier.
Although she herself never witnessed war, she achieved more than any woman before or during her time in this field of art.
On her husband's retirement from the army, they moved to Bansha Castle, County Tipperary, Ireland. During the Irish Civil War a collection of watercolours she had created from their time in Palestine were moved to Gormanston Castle for safe keeping, later they were moved to London. Ironically they were almost all destroyed during the German Blitz of London.
Lady Butler was widowed in 1910, passing away herself in 1933.
Let me introduce you my new outfit made with ingenuousness for Sophia. She desired an "Sailor" dress set.
Regarding the colors, I did a study around the tones of an old doll whose the atmosphere is a very soft sailor witch I love a lot.
So a base of ivory and blue-gray with a touch of tonic red.
This set consists of a dress, an overskirt, removable collar and stockings.
- The high waist overskirt typically nautical have two folds that open onto a striped fabric and bordered by dark green lines. A light silk ribbon bow, small brass buttons and a brass star adorn this skirt.
- The dress is cut in a lined fabric and trimmed with lace and ribbon at the bottom.
- For the stockings and the dress's breastplate, I painted myself red stripes on an ivory fabric to give an old craft touch.
- The removable sailor collar finished by a small red bow, edged with fine aqua silk ribbon
I also want to introduce you one of my new dolls customized by me during the past months.

In this lively introduction to programming for iOS, kids taught a turtle to move around the computer screen. Using the ideas from Turtle Logo, we worked with the latest version of Apple’s Playgrounds to teach kids to write and reason about sequences of computer commands.
By the end of this two hour Turtle workshop, everyone had built up routines of their own that you can call to produce interesting patterns and designs.

Basically for most of this entire piece I have been using only my .25 mm pen and .30 mm pen. Except for the night sky and also the crow’s which I used my .30 mm pen to outline the high lights on the wings and such then came back and filled in with a 1.20 mm pen which makes filling in large areas of ink so much easier although be careful because does lay down a large amount of ink and tends to dry slowly so pay attention to any chances of smearing the ink into areas you do not wish it to be. Once I completed filling in the large black areas I then used my .30 mm pen to just add some small quick line work to the feathers but not all of them. Keep some of them free of any ink to give more high lights to the birds wings.
Now for the background of the sky I used my .25 mm pen and used the swirl technique but much more tightly spaced then in any other piece I have covered before. It is extremely difficult so if you wish you can use either just a nice stippled in background or more loosely placed swirls. It really is a wonderful technique because it just makes you see movement in a 2 dimensional piece. For the clouds I just used some loosely placed stippling to add some depth and dimension and also texture to the clouds.
In next post I will cover the mediums I used to create myself and my hand. Any questions just email me and I’ll get back to you as soon as I possibly can.
