When a man loves a Wookie
Can't keep his mind on nothin' else
He'd trade the world
For the good thing he's found
If she is bad, he can't see it
She can do no wrong
And turn his back on his best friend
If he puts her down
When a man loves a Wookie
Spend his very last dime
And trying to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way, it ought to be
When a man loves a Wookie
I give you everything I've got
Trying to hold on to your precious love
And baby baby please don't treat me bad
When a man loves a Wookie
Deep down in his soul
She can bring him such misery
If she is playing him for a fool
He's the last one to know
Loving eyes can never see
Yes when a man loves a Wookie
I know exactly how he feels
'Cause baby, baby
When a man loves a Wookie
When a man loves a Wookie
When a man loves a Wookie
When a man, when a man
When a man loves a Wookie

the sun came out.
it hasn't been around much.
and while I was busy trashing some broccoli that had seen better days, I looked up from the fridge and saw a splash of sunlight on the table. and I ran for my camera. clearly, the broccoli was not in a state to be photographed, but I saw the apples in the bin. hurry, hurry, I grab, I cut, I place, and I manage to snap a handful before the sun disappeared again.
it hasn't come back all day.
but I caught it.
just for a moment.

"واحتج الآلاف في لندن على مقتل الصحفية شيرين أبو عاقلة "زهرة فلسطين
On Saturday 14 May, thousands assembled in London, both to commemorate the Nakba and also to protest the murder by the Israeli Army of the veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh ("the daughter of Palestine"), while she was covering one of many recent raids by the Israeli occupation forces on Wednesday 11 May, against the West Bank town of Jenin.
SHIREEN ABU AKLEH'S MURDER
"And if they ask you about Palestine, tell them:
In it there is a martyr,
nursed by a martyr,
photographed by a martyr,
sent off by a martyr,
and prayed for by a martyr"
( Mahmoud Darwish)
Initially, Israeli authorities insisted that she had been killed by Palestinian gunmen, but on the ground examination of the video used to support this claim by the leading Israeli human rights NGO B'Tselem, clearly demonstrated that it was taken far from the location where Shireen had been shot dead in the face, despite the fact that she was wearing a flack jacket and helmet, both clearkly marked 'Press.' Other Journalists who were present at the scene also testified that it was Israeli soldiers who fired the lethal shots, and that there was no clash as was first claimed, a claim which was also echoed by the mainstream media in Britain and the United States.
Her murder came just days after the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) and the International Federation of Journalists had filed an official complaint at the Hague against Israel for 'the systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists,' with an estimate of fifty having been killed in the last twenty years according to PJS records.
Palestinian anger mounted on Friday 13 May, when Israeli police attacked the mourners in East Jerusalem with batons as they exited St. Joseph's Hospital with the coffin on the way to a local church. Al Jazeera's live video coverage and the testimony of witnesses all seemed to indicate that the attack was entirely unprovoked, with no evidence of 'stone throwing' as suggested by Israeli authorities.
Even had there been any such incident, the police action was entirely disproportionate, smashing a window of the hearse to remove a Palestine flag and her coffin was momentarily dropped as the police attacked even the pallbearers. As the assault was broadcast live around the world, it seemed to be yet further evidence of the complete impunity Israel believes it has, due to the almost unconditional support it receives from the United States, Britain and other Western nations. Diplomatic statements of concern are the most severe sanction the West ever imposes.
In a pathetic response to a question raised in parliament, Amanda Milling, Minister of State for Asia and the Middle East, explained that she had 'publicly expressed my sadness upon hearing the news of the tragic death of veteran Palestinian Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, and called for a thorough investigation... The safety of journalists across the globe is vital and they must be protected when carrying out their critical work.' It seems Israel will once again escape any meaningful consequence for its actions.
However, it's not just that the United Kingdom turns a blind eye to Israeli violence - it also actively supports it.
Israeli pilots are routinely invited to the UK to train alongside the RAF, while the British and Israeli navies also routinely engage in joint exercises, all at a time when Israel's air force regularly attacks civilian infrastructure in Gaza (including Al Jazeera's offices in May 2021) killing 64 civilians since 2010 and when Israel's navy operates to blockade Gaza, where as a consequence one third of essential drugs are unavailable, 54% of the population are food insecure and 95% of the population have no access to safe drinking water.

COMMEMORATION OF THE NAKBA
Palestine solidarity demonstrations to commemorate the Nakba are held annually in London, usually on the Saturday before Nakba Day (15 May), the commemoration of the forced expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes by Israel, which accelerated following the declaration of establishment of the state of Israel on 14 May 1948.
Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion had informed his political and military colleagues that an Israeli state in which Jews made up only 60 per cent of the population was not viable. As Israeli historian Ilan Pappe points out, the obvious implication was that "the fewer Palestinians in a Jewish state the better."
www.versobooks.com/blogs/3809-the-nakba-and-the-ethnic-cl...
The Nakba had already started as early as November 1947 as British forces. which controlled the Palestine mandate, withdrew to the Port of Haifa leaving Jewish paramilitary groups to control the remaining areas. By May 1948 300,000 Arab residents of the areas within Palestine designated to become Israel had already been expelled, including many Arab residents Jaffa, Safad, Beisan, Acre and Western Jerusalem. That amounted to nearly two out of every five Arabs living on what would be Israel's side of the demarcation line. Most of the remainder were forced out of their homes in the subsequent months.
Israel's military ethnically cleansed some 530 Palestinian towns and villages, destroying almost all the mosques and many of the houses and committing appalling crimes against those Palestinians who had chosen to remain despite the threat of violence. It is estimated that some 15,000 Palestinians were murdered.

In the name of science - Martyr for the cause.
"Sometimes you're the scientist
Sometimes you're the lab rat
Sometimes it all comes together, baby
Sometimes you're going lose it all" — Just me, covering a song by The Dire Straits: The Bug.
"Dissection. The frog and the rat—that arch-martyrs to science—afford the most convenient subject" — Carl Wedl; 'In Rudiments of Pathological Histology'(1855).
"I could eliminate you in many different ways. But I am neither a murderer, nor a criminal. I am a scientist. You will die in the name of science". — Tchitche; Quote from the film Miss Mend.
"I understand that people become used to anything, eventually, no matter how horrifying. I’ve seen how medical students enter the anatomy lab for the first time. Their cadaver’s hands and face are covered with black plastic and the lower body is draped; all they can see is a torso. Still, they are silent and serious, and their cheeks flush pink. Sometimes people faint or vomit.
But a week later you’ll see them chatting and laughing with their lab partners as they wiggle their fingers around the vessels of the heart. A few months later they’ll dissect the face without any hesitation. They’ll prop the head up on blocks for better access and get to work on the forehead and cheeks and neck, complaining about the number of tiny structures they have to memorize, talking about how much they love to use the bone saw. They act like completely different people than the ones who entered the lab only months before.
Strangely, I’ve had the opposite reaction to animal work. In the beginning the difficulty of the procedures absorbed my thoughts, so it didn’t occur to me to react to what I was doing. Now, the tasks seem simple, so I have plenty of time to observe the crucifixion of a mouse, the insertion of a needle into a heart the size of a jellybean, the blood spreading out beneath the small body like dark angel wings.
Now it seems to me no coincidence that the most famous martyr of all time was not hanged or burned at the stake, but crucified." — Alison Christy; 'Sacrifice. When scientists have to kill' www.lablit.com/article/394

This was a significant day for a few different reasons, it was 47270s first proper run out in a few years excluding a test run it did a few months prior to this, also the fact that BR Blue 47s ran double headed in 2017 was great to see, and finally.. I managed to get this photo published in RAIL Magazine and was payed for it.
Place de la République, bent over the windshield of a car to get the reflection and the poster, lol ! Candid, 45mm, full frame.
This is the original shot (no crop). I had plenty of time to compose, so this is the best I could do in terms of framing both the poster and its reflection. However, I wished I could "merge" the two and get rid of the wall completely, but for that, I would have needed another lens, and the ideal format would be a square anyway. Here's the result of the crop. Now the question is: which is "best", and should I crop or not ?!
This is a practical case following up this discussion about street photography and retouching.
Part of "A stroll in Paris"
How about another retouch for my - before and after retouching series. Egad, another shot of Bill before the days when lung cancer could kill. Could it be? Is it possible that this was shot on "Minuscule" Beach in Brooklyn, New York, NY?
Boy, old-timey contact printing introduced a load of troubles in old prints. I have not seem this particular defect beforebit it was probably fixing and washing IMHO, but anything is possible. This is Bill at the beach on Long Island after taking an engineering job with Jim St.Clair, Jr. (Jimmy was Head Engineer) at Bell Labs. I am not sure if there are any Coneys on this particular beach but I have seen them above timberline in the Rockies. Smoking is so very glamorous! Especially on a day at the beach. Look the part and strut the beach. At least look the Part!
Someone penciled 1935 in the bottom margin of an earlier beach retouch and this probably was too. Bill was a couple years away from marriage and returned to the Rockies. Here he is in 1935 strutting his stuff at the beach, trying to impress the beach babes. Sheesh. The babes may not want to venture into the fog.
I am still otherwise packed with projects... the days are just packed, Calvin. After I scanned this, I had to immediately do the best edit that I could, even thought it was not much of an original. Frankly, now I have a load of genealogical retouching hanging out in Photoshop. There are two other series awaiting at the time too. I made an extra layer to try to lift and separate the thick shadows.
I usually owe my cousin and his family. I hope he gets a load of attaboys for his series of retouches including a family tintype original that burned my eyes. I have had some mystical retouching projects in the past, however this is another mystery. Now, where the heck was that negative and where was it taken? Editing the shot is just time but I doubt that I can make this better without pure mysticism. I doubt I can improve it much.
I made these cupcakes for my gorgeous Bestie in the world!! She turned 30 today and we all went out for dinner. I really wanted to make her a cake or cupcakes for everyone at the dinner but after talking to Ping the numbers were just getting to big and my hubby said that I shouldn't take it on as it would totally stress me out!! LOL So we (hubby) decide we'd just get her a pressie and leave it at that! Anyhow I was at work today and just felt really stink that I couldn't make her a birthday cake ... anyhow again ... I thought why not just make her a special box of cupcakes just for her!! Oh that totally got me going so I started baking!! I had about 3 hours to bake, make decorations and decorate the cupcakes .... I finished just in time to have a quick shower and take some really bad photos!! So these are very last minute cuppies indeed. To make a long story short... My dearest Pingy LOVED the cupcakes!!! We had a beautiful dinner with family and friends and I just love her to pieces!!!
Happy Birthday Ping Pong!!!

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats
French postcard by Sonis, no. C. 1792. Image: Disney / Pixar. Film Image for Ratatouille (Brad Bird, Jan Pinkava, 2007).
Ratatouille (2007) is a computer-animated film, directed by Brad Bird and Jan Pinkava. A sewer rat named Remy has sophisticated taste buds and desperately wants to become a gourmet chef. In the kitchen of an elegant restaurant in Paris, his passion for cooking stirs up sizable controversy and Remy turns the haughty world of French cuisine upside down. The delightful Ratatouille was the eighth feature film made by Pixar Animation Studios.
Ratatouille (2007) tells the story of a rat called Remy. Remy has a gift for flavours and dreams of becoming a great French chef. However, his family does not like this and sees eating as a way to survive. Moreover, people in the cooking world do not really like rats either. When the rat colony has to flee after being discovered by the owner of the house they were staying in, Remy gets separated from his family and ends up in the sewers of Paris. He ends up in the restaurant of his idol, the cook Auguste Gusteau. However, Auguste appears to have died, but in Remy's imagination, his spirit regularly appears to assist him. At the same time, a young man named Alfredo Linguini arrives at the restaurant with a letter written by his deceased mother, an old friend of Gusteau's. The new restaurant owner Skinner is therefore forced to hire Linguini. Linguini, however, turns out to have no talent at all for cooking. Remy sees how Linguini desperately tries to cook soup and fails, and intervenes. Linguini catches Remy and catches him but keeps him hidden from Skinner. Before anyone can do anything, the soup is served and proves a success. The kitchen staff think that Linguini made the soup and Colette, the restaurant's only female cook, convinces Skinner to let him stay. Skinner agrees, but Colette must train him herself. Remy tries to escape and is spotted by Skinner. He orders Linguini to take the rat and kill it, as a rat in their restaurant would be a disaster for their reputation.
The idea for Ratatouille (2007) came from Jan Pinkava. He came up with the characters and the broad outlines of the story. However, Pixar had little faith in Pinkava's development of the script, so Brad Bird was put in charge. Bird made a few major changes. He made the rats less anthropomorphic. In the original screenplay, Gusteau was still alive, but Bird concluded there were too many stories to tell and decided Gusteau would be dead. However, he does still speak to Remy as his "conscience". Brad Bird also put a lot of slapstick humour in the film, especially with the character Linguini. Brad Bird and his team spent a week in Paris drawing pictures and getting inspiration for the film. The animation brought some new challenges. There were water scenes, for example, which the illustrators said were more difficult than those in Finding Nemo. For the scene where Linguini jumps into the river to catch Remy, a Pixar employee dressed in a chef's uniform jumped into a swimming pool so that illustrators could see how his suit would react. Pet rats were kept at the studio in the hallway for more than a year so that the animators could study the movement of their fur, noses, ears, paws, and tails. The trickiest part was drawing the food digitally. This had to look realistic and tasty for the film. For this, the artists sought advice from both American and French chefs and attended a cooking course. The animation team worked alongside chef Thomas Keller at his restaurant French Laundry in order to learn the art of cooking. Mr. Keller also appears in a cameo role as the voice of a patron at Gusteau's. Brad Bird collaborated with Michael Giacchino on the music for Ratatouille. The two previously worked on the film music for The Incredibles. Giacchino wrote two songs especially for the character Remy; one about his life as a rat and one about his dreams of becoming a chef. He also wrote the title song for the film, 'Le Festin'. This song is sung by Camille and can be heard in French in all versions of the film.
Critics' reactions about Ratattouille were almost exclusively positive. Perry Seibert at AllMovie: "Artistically employing state-of-the-art CG animation, director Brad Bird uses colorful imagery to create a visual metaphor for what this rat with a highly refined palette experiences whenever he eats good food. The bright, playful splashes of color that symbolize Remy's exploding taste buds have the same effect for the audience as they do for the rat, pleasurably tickling the senses of audience members of any age. If Ratatouille accomplished nothing else, it would still be a very good movie, but the film goes even further. Remy is such a likeable, sympathetic character that his story translates to anyone's calling or interest, from cooking to filmmaking to sculpture. Without a doubt, Ratatouille is a heartwarming story, but its subtext expresses why art matters so deeply to those who make it, as well as to those who appreciate it." The film brought in $47 million in its opening weekend. In the United States, this was the lowest opening for a Pixar film since A Bug's Life (1998). However, in France, where the film's story is set, the film broke all attendance records for an animated film. When the film disappeared from cinemas again, the total worldwide revenue was $624,445,654, making Ratatouille the third-best Pixar film at the box office ever. Ratatouille had a sequel in the form of the short film Your Friend the Rat, which can be found on the DVD.

PADDY: "Thank you for the delicious birthday cake Daddy! I love it!"
SCOUT: "Thank you Daddy! I think this cake is delicious too! I don't think I'll have a grumbly tummy after eating this cake... at least for a little while!" *Giggles.*
PADDY: "Hullo everyone! Do you know what? Bears have two birthdays. Do you know what else? Today is one of my birthdays! And do you know what else? Today is my Daddy's birthday too! Isn't that a wonderful coincidence! Now Scout and I are not allowed to use the oven for fear of singeing our plush fur, so even though it is his birthday, Daddy has been so kind and has baked me a birthday cake! It is an orange poppyseed cake, so almost a marmalade cake. Grumby tummy Daddy! Grumbly tummy!" * Rubs tummy vigorously. "Isn't Daddy nice to do that just for me? I can't eat that cake all by myself, even with a grumbly tummy, so I am having a birthday party. I have invited Scout and Daddy of course. I've also asked my pug dog Cabbage, his little sister Lettuce and Duckie to come along, and also Chippy the monkey who lives in the front room. I know that everyone who I've asked to come will enjoy the occasion!
If today is your birthday too, I'd like to wish you a very happy birthday full of big little bear hugs and snuffly birthday kisses. Even if it isn't, I'd like to wish you a very happy day full of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses. Would you like some cake too?"
This beautiful nursery tea set is made by the Shell China company in the 1920s. It features six cups, saucers and plates (not all the set is being used today) as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl, all gilt and featuring different nursery rhymes including: "The Queen of Hearts", "Sing a Song of Sixpence", "Ride a Cock-Horse to Banbury Cross", "Goosey-Goosey Gander", "There Was a Little Man who had a Little Gun", "Jack and Jill" and "To Market to Market to Buy a Fat Pig". The set was a gift to me from a close friend. The platter on which Paddington's birthday cake sits featuring "Little Red Riding Hood" is from a sister faerie tale pantomime nursery dinner set made by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. Each guest at the tea party also has a tiny doll (bear) sized nursery napkin which is hand embroidered with a donkey motif. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt spoons, and the spoon in the "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" sugar bowl is an Eighteenth Century sterling silver mustard spoon. Their dessert spoons are sterling silver coffee spoons made by James Dixon and Sons in London in 1921.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic. After so long here he has decided to stop with us permanently. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Chippy the monkey came to live with me when I was four. His name is derived from his innards, which are broken chips of hazelnut shells. He was made in America some time in the mid Twentieth Century. He features beautiful brown glass eyes, a felt face, hands and feet. He was given to me by one of my Grandfather's friends who worked in a small high street toy shop which sold a mixture of new, vintage and antique toys. Chippy was vintage at the time, and had been well loved prior, so with a few holes, some worn plush and patches, he was too worn to be sold, but my family friend knew that my gentle nature and respect for my toys meant he could find a new home with me for a long time. All these decades later, she was proven right, for he still lives with me; a bit more loved, a bit more worn and with a few more patches. He also has some red chalk marks on his right hand which I remember putting on him by accident when I was six! He wanted to draw a rose on my chalkboard and I helped him do it!
Cabbage is Paddy's Pug Dog. He was a gift to Paddy from a friend who also likes Pugs. He is fiercely loyal to Paddy, Scout, Cousin Paddington and Bogart, but seldom stays around long enough to have his picture taken, as there are always new adventures to sniff out.
Lettuce was a present from my two goddaughters to me to keep Cabbage company. My eldest Goddaughter, Polly, wisely suggested the name Lettuce since we already have Cabbage. She is very soft and sweet natured. She likes cuddles and warm laps a lot and like her older brother Cabbage she likes to sniff out adventures.
Duckie is a recent addition to the family. I saw her when I was at a Sunday market on a stall of homemade knitted and crocheted items. She caught my eye straight away with her happy, smiley face and bright colours. I think she finds life with my bears intriguing and perhaps a little confusing, however she is learning.
