How about an arena full of dancers? My sister got tickets to the Flaming Lips and asked me to go with her. They were unlike any rock and roll group I've ever seen. They put on an amazing show complete with humongous balloons, confetti, laser lights, a gigantic screen they moved up and down in front of the stage, a huge plastic ball that the lead singer got into and then climbed out into the group of people in front of the stage-held up by their hands, and even two people on stage dressed as a giant catfish and a robot! Quite an experience~

MEPs joined Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in calling for more EU defence, reduced energy dependence and solidarity with Ukraine in a plenary debate on 9 March.

Opening the debate, Parliament President Roberta Metsola said: "We need to re-assess the European Union’s role in this new world. We need to boost our investment in defence and innovative technologies. This is the time for us to take decisive steps to ensure the security of all Europeans. The time to build a real security and defence union and reduce our dependencies on the Kremlin.”

In the wake of the invasion of Ukraine and as prime minister of a country sharing a nearly 300km border with Russia, Kallas called for increased EU defence, decreased energy dependence and emphasised the importance of the Nato alliance. She also talked about the importance of the future of Ukraine: “It is in our interest that Ukraine becomes more stable, more prosperous and is solidly founded on the rule of law. (...) But it’s not only in our interest to give Ukraine a membership perspective, it is also our moral duty to do so. Ukraine is not fighting for Ukraine, it’s also fighting for Europe.”

Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!

And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!

The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

Some (almost) final edits for my Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

For today's standards the mechanic parts of a car in the 1920's were quite simple. And all mechanical, nothing electronic. Chiribiri was an aircraft and automobile manufacturer from 1910-1929. The company was also involved in Grand Prix racing in the 1920's.

I am pleased to announce you the creation of a new project for Tina who want something around a tutu dress set... So I plan to make a real pancake tutu with a gradient in different tulle overlays, inspired by the romantic ballet, where the spirit of Giselle, dancing with her lover, comes to save him from the death.

This set will include six pieces... a blouse, a tutu skirt, corseted over-skirt, stockings, short cape and hair pin.

I WISH YOU ALL HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Modeling the new black & gold & "Gold 45 Revolver" Gold'N'Virtue swimsuits with the main equation to Dynamic Dimensions Theory on the swimsuits: dx4/dt=ic. Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! :) You can read more about my research and Hero's Odyssey Physics here:

herosodysseyphysics.wordpress.com/ MDT PROOF#2: Einstein (1912 Man. on Rel.) and Minkowski wrote x4=ict. Ergo dx4/dt=ic--the foundational equation of all time and motion which is on all the shirts and swimsuits. Every photon that hits my Nikon D800e's sensor does it by surfing the fourth expanding dimension, which is moving at c relative to the three spatial dimensions, or dx4/dt=ic!

After looking through my work, what do you think about Nikob vs. Sony? Do you prefer the Nikon D810 and Nikkor / Tamron / Sigma lenses /glass, or the Sony A7r and Sony Sonnar Carl Zeiss e-mount glass/lenses? I love them both! And I am so excited about the Sony A7rII !

For the first time, I have seen the concept of "smoke screening" in action! When this black mane started walking in the direction of a closeby herd of springbok, it was if he was more interested in their reaction than in actually chasing them! The result of them fleeing resulted in a dust screen to such an extend that you could barely see them! Lions...!

For those who have been wondering why I disappeared from the face of the earth for more than 2 weeks here is your answer: I have been working one of the most challenging and painstakingly detailed doll projects of my life - the Mother Earth.

This OOAK fashion consists of a hand painted sequin gown that can be altered to be worn either long with a cascading silk chiffon shirt or as an edgy short dress; either nesting a leaf gold "egg" at the model's tummy making the wearer pregnant or without it. The sequins are layered is sculpted from that resembles a feathery armour and under the hand painted copper exterior of the sequins movement reveals crevasses of deepest black. The gown's 2-tone silk hem is cut short from the front to reveal a pair of Alexander McQueen inspired platform sandals. These sandals use my Hokusai heel and are covered all over in leaf gold and decorated with golden straps with butterflies. The outfit is crowned by an Isis inspired hand sculpted helmet, which is also covered in leaf gold.

The model is a Sybarite Raja repaint by me and the wig she wears in some of the photos is from Ilaria (Time of Doll).

Star trek III, The Search for Spock

There is a wisdom as old as time that says "There is no such thing as a good odd-numbered Star Trek movie." While we could get bogged down in arguing minutiae, I would rectify that statement and say that there is no great odd-numbered Trek film, but there are at least two good ones, and the best of the odd-numbered Treks is arguably Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Forming the middle portion of a trilogy with Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home, Search for Spock picks up immediately after the events of Khan, with the Enterprise crew still mourning the loss of their former Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Upon returning to space dock, the crew is given a commendation and extended shore leave (except poor Scotty, who has to report to the new Excelsior engine room to help with their transwarp drive). The crew is resigned to the fact that the Enterprise, being over twenty years old, is going to be decommissioned, but a visit from Spock's father Sarek (Mark Lenard) leads Kirk (William Shatner) to believe that while Spock's body may be dead, his consciousness is alive in someone else... Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley).

Kirk and a skeleton crew (Scotty, Sulu, Chekov & Bones) set out in the Enterprise to return to the Genesis planet and retrieve Spock's body, in hopes of returning it to Vulcan. What they have yet to find out, however, is that Lt. Saavik (Robin Curtis) & Kirk's son David Marcus (the unfortunately named Merritt Butrick) have discovered, on Genesis, that Spock has been reborn as a child. Further complications arise when a Klingon ship, commanded by Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) gets wind of the failed Genesis project and travels there in hopes of stealing the technology for the Klingons.

Okay, we need to get this out of the way immediately; The Search for Spock is not a very good film, even by Star Trek standards. It suffers from horrendous budget restrictions which first time director Nimoy couldn't shoot around as well as his predecessor, Nicholas Meyer. A lot of the recycled sets & costumes look terrible, and really distract on the 2009 blu-ray high def transfer. It's likewise hindered by being sandwiched between arguably the two best Star Trek films ever made, and can't help but feel like a trifle compared to the other two. It's got more substance than I remember it having, but the stakes are relatively low from beginning to end, and the sense of danger imposed by Khan in the previous film is just not met by the Klingons in this film.

All that being said, the film is actually much better than I remember it being, if for no other reason than the script is actually surprisingly well written. The dialogue and interplay, particularly between the Enterprise crew is as good as it's been in any of the films, and the humor throughout (much of it by, or at the expense of, Bones) is pretty reliably funny. The two truly emotional moments in the film (Kirk learning of the death of David & Spock's recognition of Kirk at the end) still land incredibly well and make up for some of the more ridiculous acting choices made by the other actors throughout the entire film.

William Shatner, the actor, was never better than he was in these three films. His moment I mentioned a moment ago, learning of the death of his only son, is very powerful and as good as he's ever been on screen. He also appears to be having a good deal of fun in this film, which is odd considering he was unhappy at having to be directed by his co-star (all of which led to Shatner taking the helm of arguably the worst Star Trek film not directed by JJ Abrams, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier). The rest of the crew is good as well, of course all resigned to one or two bits (one of the few lessons Abrams & his writers wrongly incorporated from the original films).

Lloyd is also nowhere near as bad as I remember him to be. His casting is ridiculous, to be sure, but he's not quite as bad in actuality as I seemed to have thought he was. Curtis, taking over the role of Saavik from Kirstie Alley, though, doesn't fare as well. Granted she's not given much to do, but her line readings are spotty at best and she's not terribly convincing as a Vulcan. Beyond some ridiculous stunt work in the final fight between Kruge & Kirk on the dying Genesis planet, there's really not much else bad I can say about the film.

Star Trek III is a fairly lightweight effort in the Trek canon, but it still manages to have far more good moments than bad, and is ultimately a genuinely enjoyable entry in the series. It has its flaws, to be sure, and they are numerous, but it still manages to be solidly entertaining and never insulting in the way some of the other odd numbered Trek films were. It can't help but pale in comparison to the two films bookending it, but I wholeheartedly recommend checking it out, particularly if it's been a while since you've seen it. It holds up much better than you might remember.

For Our Daily Challenge topic - ' Eye catcher'

I've been working on something for several months and I am finally ready to tell the world about it.

To save any of you, who would rather not have to read the rest of the spiel below, I'll put a short version first:

LandArtforKids.com is a not-for-profit project I have started with JRT Pickle to encourage everyone we can to do Land Art and we are starting with kids aged 3-8. So if you are in any way inclined to agree with the sentiments that Land Art encourages creativity, exercise in the fresh air, appreciation and love for nature, fun, outdoor activity and learning for kids of all ages (myself included) then PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write a blog entry about it, tell all your friends, inform your schools, shout about it on Facebook, email everyone you know, come look at the website and stand on street corners with a loud hailer! (errm maybe not the last one - unless you REALLY, REALLY think this is a good idea)! And even if you don't think it is that great then tell everyone you know anyway!

To Flickr staff. Although my books are for sale on that site, there are very tiny markups added to them in order to try and recoup a very small percentage of our costs. We've spent many, many hours of our free time and our own money on this project and will continue to do so in our quest to provide free resources and inspiration to kids the world over to get out and make Land Art. This is not a commercial adventure but instead a personal mission to try and tell everyone about the food-for-the-soul that Land Art can be. So please don't view this as commercial because it certainly isn't.

I will also be posting Land Art for Kids related stuff with the Land Art for Kids account, so please make them a contact, and I'll return back to my own Land Art here.

Quay Brothers Return to Philly for First North American Exhibition, Film Festival Award

print version

Norristown-Native Animators, University of the Arts Grads Have Developed Global Cult Following

PHILADELPHIA (December 8, 2008) – Quirky, dark and moody has worked well for identical twins and Norristown natives Stephen and Timothy Quay. Their global cult following knows them better as the award-winning, London-based Brothers Quay, stop-action animators and graduates of The University of the Arts.

For the first time in North America, original sets (décors) from their films will be on display in the exhibition "DORMITORIUM: Film ‘Décors’ by the Quay Bros.” at their alma mater’s Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, February 27 – April 9. Part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebration of its College of Art and Design, the festivities will include a reception with the brothers, and a presentation of the Vision Award for extraordinary achievement in filmmaking in conjunction with Philadelphia CineFest on April 3.

The décors in the exhibition range from the brothers’ critically acclaimed “Street of Crocodiles” (1986) to “The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes” (2006). The exhibition also includes décors from “The Unameable Little Broom” (1985); “Stille Nacht I (Dramolet)” (1988); “The Comb (From the Museums of Sleep)” (1990); “Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies” (1988); “The Cabinet of Jan Svanmajer” (1984); “Rehearsals For Extinct Anatomies” (1988); and “The Calligrapher” (1991). After its run at the University’s Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, the show travels to Parsons The New School for Design in New York City in the fall and Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va., in the fall.

“Street of Crocodiles,” based on the short novel of the same name by the Polish author and artist Bruno Schulz, was selected by director and animator Terry Gilliam as one of the 10 best animated films of all time, and critic Jonathan Romney included it on his list of the 10 best films in any medium. “The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes” – a dark fairy tale about a demonic doctor who abducts a beautiful opera singer, with designs on transforming her into a mechanical nightingale – is the brothers’ second full-length feature film.

The Quays also directed an animated sequence in the 2002 Oscar-winning film “Frida,” starring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina. Their first feature film, “Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life” was released in 1995. Their third feature, based on Schulz’s “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass,” is in pre-production.

They have built a cult following making dark and moody films, mostly on or influenced by Eastern European film, literature and music. Many feature partially disassembled dolls and generally have no meaningful spoken dialogue. Their work has been impacted by an array of disparate influences – from Polish animators Walerian Borowczyk and Jan Lenica to writers Franz Kafka and Robert Walser; from puppeteers Wladyslaw Starewicz and Richard Teschner to composers Leo Janácek, Zdenek Lika and Leszek Jankowski.

Born and raised in Norristown, Pa., the brothers graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art (now The University of the Arts) in 1969 (Stephen with a degree in film; Timothy with a degree in illustration) and promptly moved to England to study at the Royal College of Art, where they made their first film. During the ’70s, they spent time in the Netherlands and returned to England to team up with fellow Royal College alumnus Keith Griffiths, who has produced all of their films, to form Koninck Studios in 1980.

The University of the Arts is the nation’s first and only university dedicated to the visual, performing and communication arts. Its 2,300 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs on its campus in the heart of Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts. The institution’s roots as a leader in educating creative individuals date back to 1868.

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracels took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

What a beautiful way to test the Nikon D810 and Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens for sports photography!
