Gumeracha and Kenton Valley – William Randell’s Town.
David McLaren took out three Special Surveys of the Torrens Valley area for the SA Company in 1839/40. They had a manager’s residence built there called Tinmath, then renamed Ludlow House for the sheep and cattle herd manager. William Beavis Randell, a SA Company manager arrived in SA in 1837 and was sent to work at Tinmath House. When his contract with the Company expired in 1845 he bought land for himself in Kenton Valley adjacent to Gumeracha. Here he built a grand house for himself called Kenton Park and a flour mill which opened for business in 1847. From 1848 he attracted wheat from the early settlers at Blumberg. One of his sons, William Randall managed the mill. In 1853 this son called William entered the Governor sponsored race up the Murray to prove that it was navigable and suitable for steam boat river trade. This William was known as Captain Randell of Mannum and he was the winner of the race and the monetary prize. Much of the flour produced in the Gumeracha Randell mill from 1853 onwards was carted by bullocks to Mannum to be loaded onto a Randell ship for transport up the Murray and Darling rivers and to the gold mining centre of Bendigo!
William Beavis Randell was a good Baptist and friend of David McLaren the former SA Company manager who was also a Baptist. McLaren had lived in Ludlow House himself for some time. Early Baptist services for the Gumeracha area were held in Randell’s barn until the Salem Baptist Church, the oldest Baptist congregation in SA was opened in 1846 by Reverend Thomas Playford of Mitcham. Randell donated some of his land for the church. William Beavis Randell and his wife and family are buried in the attached cemetery. Until 1899 baptisms were conducted in a spring in the circle of oaks opposite the church. A Methodist Church opened in Gumeracha in 1860 followed by the Institute in 1864 and the District Hotel. Gumeracha also got the first Court House and police station for the Torrens region.
William Beavis Randell subdivided some of his land to create the township of Gumeracha in 1853. He named streets after his friend David McLaren and the reigning English monarch and her prince consort. Randell died at Kenton Park in 1876 and the milling business was then taken over by his son Captain William Randell. He was an interesting character. A few months after his wife died when he was aged 76 years he married his 38 year old housekeeper. He died himself four months later but by then the second wife was pregnant. She got 100 acres of land, but not Kenton Park house. Her son from this marriage eventually bought the property for himself in 1928. In the meantime the Randell mill was converted to a butter factory, a butcher’s shop and finally a milk depot. It is now a private residence and bed and breakfast establishment. The workers cottages erected by William Randell senior are still adjacent.
The SA Company residence Ludlow House was retained by the SA Company until 1908 when it was sold to Mr W Hannaford. But for many years it too was leased out once the SA Company moved its headquarters for stock from the Gumeracha district. As a result of the three Special surveys in the areas around the origins of the Torrens and the Onkaparinga the SA Company had over 9,000 acres of land in the district. The Company moved out of stock production in the Gumeracha-Birdwood districts in the 1850s as they started receiving more and more rents from tenanted farmers. Rents and land sales became the Company’s major source of income after this early development stage of SA. Much of its land in this area was sold in the 1910s and 1920s. The Company ceased operations in 1949.
Wheat lines being screened for resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) on an experimental plot at CIMMYT’s headquarters at El Batán, Mexico, showing various levels of symptoms (manifest as necrosis of heads). The disease has been encouraged by spray inoculation with Fusarium graminearum spores (teleomorph Gibberella zeae) and mist irrigation. CIMMYT screens several thousand lines for FHB resistance every year. Resistant materials are the result of ongoing breeding efforts, and may be used further in CIMMYT’s breeding program or enter international nurseries like the Fusarium head blight screening nursery (FHBSN).

Please mark your calendars for our Spring Bread and Cheese Creek which will be are largest cleanup to date! These photos show the current sad condition of this historic stream. We plan to clean up Bread and Cheese Creek form the Berkshire section to North Point Road on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM, All the assistance from volunteers and sponsor is greatly appreciated! We know this is a huge section of stream to tackle but I know we can do it!
This cleanup will be in conjunction with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s Project Clean Stream and it will be our fifth year working with them! This cleanup will also be in conjunction with American Rivers. We will supply trash bags, gloves, water, snacks and lunch. A limited supply of waders and tools will also be available for sign out during the cleanup.
Remember, there plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to work the grills as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. Please feel free to pass this information on to other who might be interesting in helping as well. As my grandfather always said, "Many hands makes the work light". We run our cleanups as a family event with all age groups welcome by developing plenty of ways for volunteers to participate.
Our cleanups are part of an ongoing effort clean the entire stream by the 2014 bicentennial celebration of War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. (Bread and Cheese Creek has been noted as one of the highlighted location on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail) The creek played a rather significant part in the Battle of North Point which took place on September 12, 1814. Both the American and British Troops camped along its banks. It is rumored that the young heroes Daniel Wells (19) and Henry McComas (18) used the stream channel to sneak up on British General Robert Ross killing him with their muskets before being killed in return fire. This important part of our history should not be left the eyesore it currently is and those who died defending our country honored in this way.

The following information about this control project was prepared by Malcolm M. Furniss and is taken from the Western Forest Insect Work Conference history page: www.wfiwc.org/history/photos/control
"Western Hemlock Looper. The first known record of extensive tree-killing by a forest insect in the western United States involved the western hemlock looper, Lambdina fiscellaria lugubrosa (Hulst).... A subsequent outbreak killed 200 million board feet (bd ft) of hemlock in Pacific and Grays Counties, Washington from 1929-1932. Losses in Pacific County were reduced in 1931 through the first airplane dusting experiment attempted against a forest defoliator in the western United States (Keen 1932). Keen was involved with the operation and voiced his concern in a letter to Craighead (13 July 1931) regarding toxicity of the calcium arsenate contained in the dust:
'In connection with the airplane dusting project, we are naturally experiencing some criticism from people who object to having poison scattered around in wholesale lots for fear of killing off the wildlife and even domestic animals. I have tried to get some information from the local Boards of Health as to what constitutes lethal doses of calcium arsenate for birds, mammals and humans but with very little success...'"

For the what's in your bag pool, a photo of what I currently carry around and the bag I carry the stuff around with.
Loreto College Ballarat, a Catholic school for girls was established in 1875 by Mother Gonzaga Barry (1834 – 1915) a member of the order of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary whose members are commonly known as the Sisters of Loreto; a courageous woman with a truly visionary approach that saw her create educational opportunities for girls never before considered in the society of that day. The Loreto Sisters arrived in Australia in response to a request by the Bishop of Ballarat, Bishop O'Connell. The group of ten sisters from Ireland, led by Mother Gonzaga Barry, set up a convent in Ballarat, Victoria and their first girls school, known as Mary's Mount, which today is known as Loreto College.
When they arrived in Ballarat, the Mother Superior set about acquiring a property at 1600 Sturt Street. Under the sandstone facade of the main front building that exists today, you will find the original house purchased by the Loreto Sisters. The Regency style house was built for Edward Agar Wynne around 1868 as a family home. Today’s entrance was originally the back entrance as the house fronted Lake Wendouree. The upper floor and the Gothic facade were added in 1914. To the right, attached to the original building is the residential wing which was built in 1882. This contained a schoolroom on the ground floor and boarders’ dormitories above.
The Sisters of Loreto were anxious to build a wall around the convent for privacy. Indeed, in earlier times the order was kept semi-enclosed, which enabled limited contact with the world outside the convent walls. The convent was built in 1881 largely through donations. The grand gateway was designed by architect William Tappin.
The Loreto Chapel, or Children’s Chapel as it is known, was built between 1898 and 1902. The architect was William Tappin and the builder George Lorimer. It is built in an English Gothic style with French influences. The stone from which it is constructed is Barrabool Hills sandstone taken from a quarry near Geelong. It also features white stone detailing from Oamaru in New Zealand. Building was interrupted through lack of funds, but the project was finally completed with a large bequest from the German Countess Elizabeth Wolff-Metternich, who had arrived at Ballarat unannounced in 1898, was captivated by the post Gold Rush city and decided to teach German to the Loreto students. A direct descendent of St Elizabeth of Hungary, Countess Elizabeth later found that she loved the peace and simplicity of the Mary's Mount cloister, and informed Mother Gonzaga that she wished to be accepted as a novice. The Mother Superior urged the young woman to return to Germany to discuss her future with her family prior to making a decision. Sadly, Countess Elizabeth was never to return to Ballarat: tragedy struck the RMS India, in the Straits of Messina en route Europe, when Countess Elizabeth died suddenly in April 1899, possibly from cholera, as she was nursing sick passengers on board the ship during its journey. When her will was read, it was found that Countess Elizabeth had left a generous 16,000 pounds to the astonished Mother Gonzaga to `be used as she thought fit'. Funds were once again available to finish the Children's Chapel, but there was to be another, seemingly impenetrable, obstacle: Germany had instituted a law forbidding money to be sent out of the country, so the funds remained frozen in Germany indefinitely. However, Countess Elizabeth's relatives contacted their distant relative, Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany (eldest grandson of England's Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) to petition that the funds be released for the Australian convent. It was only through the direct intervention of the Kaiser that the law was waived in this particular case. The Children’s Chapel was officially opened in December 1902.
The inside of the Children’s Chapel is decorated in soft pastel colours with artwork and statuary donated to the Sisters of Loreto by families in Ballarat and back in Ireland. The Rose Window over the Organ Gallery depicts Saint Cecilia the patron saint of music, surrounded by symbols of the four Evangelists, Matthew Mark Luke and John. The windows over the alter depict the instruments of the Passion of Christ. The marble alter features the Nativity scene as was requested by the girls attending Loreto at the time.
To the right of the driveway as you enter Loreto College stands a small building, which is the former St. Anne’s Primary School. It was the original parish school built in 1908. St. Anne’s was closed in the early 1920s, and became a finishing school for the daughters of the well-to-do of Ballarat and its surrounding districts. With the advent of the Great Depression, the need for a finishing school dwindled, and by the mid 1930s, St. Anne’s had become a Priest’s Chalet which it remained until 1941 when it became a kindergarten. The kindergarten finally closed in 1978, but not before the old school was completely swallowed by additions and modifications in the 1960s. A mine shaft was discovered when the 1960s extension was built. Today, St. Anne’s sits peacefully amid the grounds of Loreto College and at the time of photographing was being restored to its former Edwardian glory.
To the left of the entrance gates is the Rosary Way. This is a walk to be taken whilst saying the prayers of the Rosary. The Loreto College Rosary way is modelled on the Rosary Way in the Aylesford Priory Gardens in Kent. At the end of the Rosary Way is the Lourdes Grotto, built in commemoration of the grotto in Lourdes where Our lady of Lourdes appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. This is the second Lourdes Grotto, the first more elaborate two storey structure having been moved to make way for the Children’s Chapel. The Lourdes Grotto contains a small stone from Lourdes brought back by Mother Gorzaga Barry from her journey to Europe in 1894.

The Ultimate Builder rolled into Cleveland, OH and for the 3rd year in a row, snow greeted the custom bike builders as they unloaded their sled into the show.
Cleveland, founded in 1796, is located in northeastern Ohio on the shore of Lake Erie and just 60 miles West of the Pennsylvania border. It’s home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Ultimate Builder FreeStyle Class
Jesse Bassett at The Gasbox began the custom Indian sled build with an eBay-found 1940 741 Indian frame. A Norton Commando 4-speed transmission was chosen to replace the OEM Indian 3-speed. New engine plates were made and the scout primary was cut in half, offset and mated with a 1920’s Indian outer primary. All aluminum was polished, all steel was nickel plated, and all cast iron was electroless plated. The entire frame and fork were nickel plated then painted Indian red.

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracels took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

Spring Time in the Malibu Canyons! Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!
Let me know your favs.!

Photos taken on an evening visit to Philae for son et lumiere (we returned the following morning for a longer visit in daylight!).
The temple of the goddess Isis at Philae is one of the most beautiful in Egypt, not as large as some but structurally largely complete, which is fitting for the temple believed to be the last to operate under the ancient Egyptian religion, having only formally closed for pagan worship in the 6th century AD.
It was also the first of Egypt's great temples I ever saw in person and left me spellbound, and thus it was fitting that this should again be the first we visited on this trip.
The temple sits in a uniquely picturesque setting on a small island in the Nile south of Aswan and thus has only ever been approached boat. The complex consists of the main temple building dedicated to Isis (wife of Osiris and mother of Horus) whose inner sanctum is entered via a forecourt with towering pylons guarding the inner and outer entrances. All this is approached from the Nile through an open court flanked by lengthy colonnades making an unforgettable first impression.
There are several subsidary buildings of note around the site, the most imposing of which is undoubtedly the large rectangular colonnaded structure known as 'Trajan's Kiosk', which features some beautifully carved capitals.
The temple is relatively new by Egyptian standards, begun under one of the last of the native pharoahs, Nectanebo I (c380-62 BC) but mostly dating to the Ptolemaic period (as do many of the better preserved temples in the south of the country).
The temple's long use and later conversion to a church along with its remote location helped preserve it more or less completely over the centuries, but in the 20th century it faced its biggest threat, the construction of the Aswan dams which are located either side and caused Philae island to flood. The first dam (built 1902) caused the temple to be inundated for much of the year (thus washing away all the remaining paintwork from the interior; 19th century watercolours record what a loss the coloured details were). The bigger threat came in the 1960s when the Aswan High Dam was built to the south, causing the water levels to rise enough to completely submerge most of the temple. For some years all that could be seen of Philae were the four main towers and the columns of Trajan's Kiosk emerging from the waters.
Fortunately salvation came in the 1970s following the campaign to rescue and relocate the Nubian temples further south also threatened by the rising waters. Following the construction of a coffer-dam around the temple the entire temple complex was dismantled and rebuilt on higher ground on the adjoining island of Agilkia where it can be enjoyed in its full splendour today.

SALAMPASU (ASALAMPASU, BASALAMPASU, MPASU)
Democratic Republic of the Congo
The 60,000 Salampasu people live east of the Kasai River, on the frontier between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. Their name is said to mean “hunters of locusts”, but they were widely viewed with terror by adjacent groups. They maintain strong commercial and cultural relations with their southern neighbors, the Chokwe and the Lunda, to whom they pay tribute. The Salampasu are homogeneous people governed by territorial chiefs, who supervise village chiefs. Their hierarchical power structure is counterbalanced by a warriors' society. A people with a reputation as fearless warriors, the Salampasu have retained the custom of a rough and primitive life. Warring and hunting are privileged occupations, but the women do some farming.
Salampasu masks were integral part of the warriors’ society whose primary task was to protect this small enclave against invasions by outside kingdoms. Boys were initiated into the warriors’ society through a circumcision camp, and then rose through its ranks by gaining access to a hierarchy of masks. Earning the right to wear a mask involved performing specific deeds and large payments of livestock, drink and other material goods. Once a man ‘owned’ the mask, other ‘owners’ taught this new member particular esoteric knowledge associated with it. The Salampasu use masks made from wood, crocheted raffia, and wood covered with sheets of copper. Famous Salampasu masks made for initiation purposes are characterized by a bulging forehead, slanted eyes, a triangular nose and a rectangular mouth displaying intimidating set of teeth. The heads are often covered with bamboo or raffia or rattan-like decorations. Presented in a progressive order to future initiates, they symbolize the three levels of the society: hunters, warriors, and the chief. Certain masks provoke such terror that women and children flee the village when they hear the mask's name pronounced for fear they will die on the spot. Wooden masks covered or not covered with copper sheets are worn by members of the ibuku warrior association who have killed in battle. The masks made of plaited raffia fiber are used by the idangani association. Throughout the southern savannah region copper was a prerogative of leadership, used to legitimize a person’s or a group’s control of the majority of the people. Possessing many masks indicated not only wealth but also knowledge. Filing teeth making part of many wooden masks was part of the initiation process for both boys and girls designed to demonstrate the novices’ strength and discipline. Salampasu masquerades were held in wooden enclosures decorated with anthropomorphic figures carved in relief. The costume, composed of animal skins, feathers, and fibers, is as important as the mask itself. It has been sacralized, and the spirit dwells within it. Masks are still being danced as part of male circumcision ceremonies.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

For those interested, this is our rain barrel system. We took video to explain it, haven't gotten around to editing it yet.
We have 7-55 gallon barrels all hooked together. They fill at the same time and drain together. We have one spigot to fill watering cans and a pump with another spigot for use with the hose or sprinkler.
There's an overflow as well, they're all hooked together and overflow into the downspout if they're full. We have a clear tube at the end so we can see how much water we have. The system is also easily expandable if we want to add more barrels, we think we can fit 7-10 more across the back of the garage.
One of the best things about this system is the cost. We only spent about $120 for the entire system (including deck). The deck was built with lumber we removed from the deck on our house, we wanted a smaller sized deck on the house. The barrels are food grade plastic barrels and cost us only $10 each (you want to make sure you don't get barrels that had chemicals in them). We spent about $50 on other materials, posts, PVC (we also had some of that sitting around that we used up).

In this photo: Batang
For the first time in 25 years, staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are making preparations for the highly anticipated birth of an endangered Bornean orangutan. With a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP), the 19-year-old parents to be, female Batang and male Kyle, bred in January. On Feb. 2, a common human pregnancy test confirmed that Batang had successfully conceived. Earlier today, the Zoo announced Batang’s pregnancy through a broadcast via Facebook Live of her ultrasound; it will continue to provide weekly updates on Batang through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #OrangutanStory.
Zoo veterinarians have conducted bi-weekly ultrasounds since Feb. 2 and are encouraged that the ultrasounds have shown fetal growth and development, heightening hopes that Batang will give birth for the first time. They are cautiously optimistic that she will deliver a healthy baby around mid-September. However, just like any animal pregnancy, there is a possibility that miscarriage, stillbirth or a complication could occur.
“All of our perseverance and planning paid off when we confirmed Batang’s pregnancy,” said Dr. Meredith Bastian, curator of primates and member of the Orangutan SSP Steering Committee. “Watching her fetus develop over the past few months has been incredibly exciting, and we’re making every effort to ensure our efforts come to fruition.”
For the past three years, keepers have been acclimating Batang to the experiences of motherhood and training her to care for an infant. Building upon behaviors Batang has learned through routine training sessions, keepers presented her with a plush, bean-shaped pillow and an orangutan stuffed animal to simulate a baby. Keepers trained her to hold the “fake” baby upright, carry it around the enclosure and return the pillow baby to keepers through a specially designed “baby box” when asked. Should animal care staff need to evaluate a real orangutan baby’s health, this training would help staff retrieve the infant in a way that is safe and not stressful for the animals. Batang has also been trained to use a breast pump for milk collection in the event she is unable to successfully nurse.
“Training increases the likelihood that orangutan mothers will care for their infants,” said Becky Malinsky, assistant curator of primates. “This training is especially important for a first time mother, like Batang. It is our goal for the infant to be raised by her mother, learning how to be an orangutan from Batang and the other orangutans at the zoo.”
In the event that Batang is unable or unwilling to care for her infant, keepers are training females Bonnie and Iris to act as surrogate mothers. They receive similar training to Batang, but with a slight twist: keepers ask them to bring the pillow baby and present it to the keepers for bottle feedings. Batang is also trained to present the infant for bottle feedings if she is unable to nurse. As a last resort, keepers will prepare a nursery in the event it is necessary for them to hand-raise the baby with the goal of returning the infant to its mother or surrogate as soon as possible.
Native to Indonesia, orangutans live in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. For the past seven decades, humans have cleared land that was originally orangutan territory in order to meet the growing demand for palm oil products, fast-growing pulp wood and food crops leaving orangutans in competition with one another for space, food and mates. Scientists estimate that in the past 75 years, the number of wild orangutans has decreased by 80 percent. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Bornean orangutan as endangered and the Sumatran orangutan as critically endangered.
Visitors can see the Zoo’s six orangutans daily at the Great Ape House and the Think Tank. At the Great Ape House, visitors can meet a great ape keeper to learn about the fascinating world of apes at 11:30 a.m. daily. At Think Tank, staff and interpretive volunteers perform daily demonstrations and lead discussions on research in cognitive science, highlighting current and ongoing Zoo studies at 1:30 p.m. Visitors can also see the orangutans traveling on the O-Line on warm-weather days in the late morning and early afternoon.
