We have been in awe of our gas giant for a while now since we discovered it hanging out in our western sky.
For our second assessment we had to make a picture in the studio with a technical camera. It had to be a still life with at least three objects in it.
We only worked with this technical camera for two times and it wasn't easy. Fortunately we did it in groups so we could help each other:)
For Canada Day 2016, the National Music Centre at Studio Bell opened its doors to the public for a one-day special event with free admission in order to give Calgarians a taste of what they can expect from the new venue when it opens fully in the Fall. Featuring four floors of exhibition space, there was a mix of traditional and interactive exhibits, plus special performances on each of the floors throughout the day.

I always wanted to build the Vickers Valiant and other larger planes but since I currently have a very limited storage room for LEGO, it was impossible to build those planes.
However, I saw some of the models of my friend Dornbi (Peter Dornbach), I got inspired and I decided to make an experiment and build a mini-scale Vickers Valiant.
The model features a large internal bomb bay and a large nuclear bomb inside.
This is the first mini-scale plane that I make in a while so I´m still learning how to make them.

It was on January 3rd that I had to say good-bye to my old boy Ozzie. Hard to believe that it has been six months without him. His three best friends (Yellow Dog, Mr. Hedgehog and Mr. Bun-bun) wait patiently for someone to love them. Maybe someday soon.

Going home to my rented apartment one evening along the little rios in the Castello district, this scene called to me to take a picture. It was absolutely peaceful, the waiter standing outside the door to the restaurant had encouraged me to come have dinner there as the place was truly empty on this deserted chilly winter night. After wishing him a good evening, I walked on. There was a stone bridge nearby, so I propped the camera on the wall and took a succession of images. I like the "calligraphy" in the water in this one and the glow of the tethered boats barely visible in the darkness. The waiters and passers-by standing outside give a little flair to a typical everyday scene in one of the many dark byways of this remarkable city. "Buena sera!, " people say, as you walk by. "Good evening!"

Late afternoon during a breaking storm, Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve, Central California. The rushing cold wind was almost unbearable, and walking along the ridge the wind brought with a thin layer of damp fog that fogged up everything from my sunglasses to my camera lens to my filters.
Upon reaching the summit of the Ridge, I noticed a small collection of fresh roses placed atop one of the many rocks. In the howling wind and cold, the flowers appeared completely untouched. Alongside was a plaque which read:

our daughter
Born in the hands of the lord
and in our hearts forever
Dec, ***"

A Double Play...for Doubleday?
Hah, well if not for him...for me at least. To those that are even casual students of our National Pastime will know the name Abner Doubleday and the town of Cooperstown. The latter is a quaint upstate New York village beside Otsego Lake that is home of the Baseball Hall of fame. The former is the alleged inventor of the game of baseball in that very town in 1839, hence the choice to locate the hall of fame here in 1937. And while most historians believe the Mills Commision's assertions about Doubleday and Cooperstown are nothing but fiction, the legend still sticks here.
But to railfans there is more than just baseball in Cooperstown. The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley operates a heritage railroad and museum along the historic line of the same name first opened in 1869. The original road came under D&H ownership in 1903 and was operated as branch of that Class 1 for 67 years. The branch was sold to the Delaware Otsego Corp in 1970 and freight trains continued to operate into the mid 1980s along with excursion trains. The last freight ran in 1987 and the line was completely moribund until being sold to the Leatherstocking Chapter of the NRHS in 1996. Incidentally, despite selling the branch the Delaware Otsego Corp (parent company of the NYS&W) retained ownership of the passenger depot in Cooperstown where they still maintain their corporate headquarters despite having no rail operations in town.
Despite having been in existence as a tourist railroad for more than two decades I'd never visited the operation. But in a twist of good fortune I made a totally unplanned trip to Binghamton chasing an NS train on the old D&H the day prior to this photo. While out that evening with an old railroader/railfan friend he told me that the CACV just happened to be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of their railroad the very next day.
Based out of the small town of Milford south of Cooperstown they had a full weekend of special events and extra trains. The highlight of the event was the first steam locomotive to traverse these rails since the 1970s and included a bit of rare mileage almost into downtown Cooperstown.
Viscose Company #6 is an 0-4-0 saddle tank loco built by Baldwin in 1924. Originally assigned to the American Viscose Company plant in Roanoke, VA she was sold for scrap in the early 1960s. Never cut up she languished for decades in the yard of Gem City Iron & Metal Company in Pulaski, VA. Purchased by Scott Symans of Dunkirk, NY in 2004 and restored over the next three years she now travels by truck to shortlines and tourist railroads all over the country that do not have steam locomotives of their own.
She weighs 60,000 lbs and has a 17,360 lb tractive effort.
Here she is just starting to pull south from her photo op at the Cooperstown village welcome sign just north of here at Chestnut St. / Route 28 crossing.. This little bit is rare mileage as the normal northern limits of CACV operations is the runaround track a half mile south of this point and this crossing is clearly out of service and marked exempt.
So there you have it...a double hit of rare mileage and rare steam...and all totally unplanned!

For a challenge group we had to make a collage of your favorites. So, this are my Favorites, ENJOY :D
Mixed feelings when I see pups for sale in the street, good they aren't roaming the streets and will probably find a home. Bad to me is the unethical breeding for profit by breeders do not care or even know anything about breed standards, or about producing puppies that are conformationally and behaviorally sound. They only care about producing puppies that look fit enough to sell to the average consumer who has no knowledge about breed standards and soundness anyway.
For Macro Mondays - This week's theme is "Begins With the Letter "D". Captured at the Sensory Garden at KU. I'm fascinated by these Golden Raintree Pods and love them when they are dried and bronzed.

"Night Witches" is the English translation of Nachthexen, a World War II German nickname (Russian Ночные ведьмы, Nochnye Vedmy) for the female military aviators of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, of the Soviet Air Forces. The regiment was formed by Colonel Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokia Bershanskaya.
The regiment flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions against the German military from 1942 until the end of the war. At its largest, it had 40 two-person crews. It flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. It was the most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot having flown over 800 missions by the end of the war and twenty-three having been awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Thirty of its members died in combat.
The regiment flew in wood-and-canvas Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes, a 1928 design intended for use as training aircraft and for crop-dusting, and to this day the most-produced biplane in aviation history. The planes could carry only six bombs at a time, so multiple missions per night were necessary. Although the aircraft were obsolete and slow, the pilots made daring use of their exceptional maneuverability; they had the advantage of having a maximum speed that was lower than the stall speed of both the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and as a result, German pilots found them very difficult to shoot down. An attack technique of the night bombers was to idle the engine near the target and glide to the bomb release point, with only wind noise left to reveal their location. German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and named the pilots "Night Witches." Due to the weight of the bombs and the low altitude of flight, the pilots carried no parachutes

By evening of this past Saturday's arctic blast, the temps had risen 15 degrees to 10 F. The wind was still whipping though. With a warm glow on the horizon, I set out for another try at a walk on the beach. Just eight minutes in, I turned around.
