A float from the night before the Rose Bowl Parade. We found one of the warehouses where they assemble the floats and got a sneak peek of the completed floats while they were preparing to move them to the parade staging area several miles away.
Amazing thing, that Rose Bowl Parade. Everything you see on the float (apart from the people) needs to be covered in a natural material. Flowers, leaves, corn silk, coconut husks, beans, nuts, bark, etc... Anything and everything. The CalPoly dragon float was even covered in ground red pepper flake paste.

There was a period of time living in New York when I did not have a job. Some friends I knew were earning money by organizing parties for nightclubs. With nothing better to do, I began documenting their lifestyle.
I spent most of those days sorting through pictures, trying to piece together the fragmented recollections of what just happened the night before. My life was quite random and impulsive at the time, so working with photographs seemed like a good way to feel more grounded. The results seem quite ironic now.
I did have serious intentions of creating a photo documentary on New York nightlife, but the reality of living this life made it impossible for me to remain objective from its influence. Whatever insight I gained was soon washed away in the next blur of revelry. What began as a fun project soon became an impossible burden.
Months later I quit the project and retreated into solitude. Looking back, I’m amazed how well this image captures what it felt like—delirium and weightlessness, suspended in a dark unknown.
